  • We report the operation of a self-adaptive vector phase conjugate laser (VPCL) oscillator which compensates intracavity polarization distortion and wavefront aberration simultaneously. The VPCL in Nd:YAG gain media produce an output with energy of 125mJ in a 20ns single-longitudinal-mode pulse at 10Hz, which is unaffected by intracavity polarization distortion.

In-Vitro Study of Urokinase Thrombolysis Following Stereotactic Aspiration of Intracerebral Hematoma

  • Objective : A consensus regarding the ideal regimen for urokinase (UK) thrombolysis subsequent to stereotactic spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage aspiration has yet to be established. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of UK thrombolysis relative to when the regimen is changed. Methods : Venous blood from 30 heathy volunteers was obtained for this in-vitro study. Various concentrations of UK solution were added to microcentrifuge tubes containing the clotted blood. The efficacy of UK thrombolysis was identified by checking the weight of lysed hematoma following various time intervals with different concentrations of UK solution. Group one, the "3×4" group involved four administrations every 3 hours over 12 hours, and group two, the "6×2" group involved two administrations every 6 hours over 12 hours. Results : More hematoma was lysed in the 3×4 group than the 6×2 group across all concentration levels (however, the differences were only significant between groups at the 500 and 1000 IU concentration levels, p<0.05). There were no significant differences of lysed hematoma among the various UK solution concentrations within groups. Conclusion : This study suggests that frequent administrations of UK thrombolysis may result in a greater degree of lysed hematoma in comparison to a higher concentration of UK.

Prospects for e-Science In Korea : The role and impacts ol Korea-UK collaboration

  • The Korea UK e-Science Collaboration project has been aimed at supporting research and collaboration between Korean and UK researchers. Its goal is to benefit the nation by reducing cost and time in constructing the National e-Science Research Environment' by studying and benchmarking the cases in countries that have already procured advanced technologies in the area. Two joint workshops were held in a year where researchers from the two countries had the opportunities to share their research results with each other. Also, the project has supported exchanges of researchers fostering expertise in the field. In the course of the project, the e-Science Centre in the UK and KISTI have signed MoU(Memorandum of Understanding) in 2006. Moreover, there have been active research collaboration between Korea and the UK. The University of Southampton will share the BioSimGrid data with the Korean counterpart, and the University of York has provided the AURA software. In the future, KISTI and the UK NGS(National Grid Service) will organize a working group at OGF that will work mainly on the standardization of Parameter Sweep and bring it to lead the global standard. KISTI will include its own AURORA system into OMI-UK software stack, which will enable access to NGS resources through AURORA user application. The collaboration with the UK has opened up more opportunities for collaboration with other countries as well. KISTI and HLRS in Germany have agreed to share the COVISE and will have research exchanges. As such, it is expected that Korea will play a major role in e-Science research by building strategic and systematic collaborative relations with its International partners.

농흉환자에서의 늑막강내 유로키나제주입 전후의 섬유소 용해에 관한 연구 (Profiles of Local Fibrinolytic Activity before and after Urokinase Injection Into the Human Empyema Cavity)

  • 연구배경 : 최근의 연구에서는 염증성늑막삼출의 경우, 늑막내의 응고작용은 증가되고 섬 유소용해능은 감소되어 흉수의 섬유소 제거가 감소됨이 보고되었다. 특히 농흉의 경우에 있 어서 섬유소침착이 진행되어 늑막강내에 격막이 형성되는 경우를 섬유소화농기로 분류하는 데 이때는 임상적으로 다수의 소방이 상호 분리된 격막으로 형성됨으로 늑막천자로서는 배 농이 불가능하며 단순폐쇄식 흉부삽관술을 이용한 치료로서도 완치가 어렵다. 따라서 최근 의 늑막강내로의 유로키나제(UK) 국소적 주입이 좋은 성적을 보임으로써 국소적 섬유소용 해치료가 농흉치료의 효과적인 한 방편으로 제시되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 임상적 관찰에도 불구하고 UK주입후 과연 늑막강내의 섬유소용해능이 증가하는 지에 관한 직접적인 연구보 고는 없었다. 따라서 저자들은 늑막강내 UK의 주입이 국소적 섬유소용해능을 증가시켜 소 방의 용해를 촉진시킨다는 가설하에 농흉환자를 대상으로 유로키나제 주입전후의 흉수내 D-dimer(D-Di)와 plasminogen activator activity(PA-activity)를 측정하고자 하였다. 방법 : 다수의 소방이 형성된 14예의 농흉환자를 대상으로 UK주입전후의 흉수내 D-dimer를 효소결합면역흡착검사(ELISA)로 측정하였고 PA-activity는 광발색법으로 측정 하였다. 일회 주입시 20만단위의 UK를 사용하였고 모든 환자에서 최소 2회 이상 투여하였으며 3회 주입후 결과를 분석하였다. 결과 : UK 주입전 PA-activity는 $10.5{\pm}7.0$ IU tPA/ml로서 UK 주입 1회 후, 2회 후, 3회 후 각각 $91.9{\pm}27.0$, $432.3{\pm}177.1$, $170.0{\pm}85.3$ IU tPA/ml로 유의하게 상승하였고(p<0.01) 2회 째 주입후 최고치에 도달하였다(p<0.01). D-Di 역시 주입전 $4.16{\pm}1.06{\times}10^5ng/ml$에서 주입 1회 후, 2회 후 및 3회 후 각각 $9.62{\pm}1.54{\times}10^5$, $12.31{\pm}1.89{\times}10^5$, $8.54{\pm}1.56{\times}10^5ng/ml$으로 유의하게 상승하였다(p<0.05). 결론 : 늑막강내 유로키나제의 국소적 주입은 늑막내 plasmic을 생성하여 섬유소용해를 촉진시킴으로서 소방을 제거하는 것으로 보인다.

Latent fingerprint development from rubber gloves using MMD I (Multimetal deposition I)

  • Gloves are very important evidence at a crime scene; specifically, rubber gloves can be found easily at homes. Therefore, crime scene investigators attempt to develop fingerprints inside the rubber gloves that are discovered, for identifying unknown suspects. This study compared the effectiveness of three different methods that are used for developing latent prints on gloves with aging time. These were the powder, cyanoacrylate fuming, and multi-metal deposition I methods. The powder method achieved good results for 1-3 days of aged prints, and the cyanoacrylate fuming method worked well on 2-week-old prints. In comparison, multi-metal deposition I method developed good quality fingerprints for 6 weeks of aging time.

청년실업자의 스트레스와 사회적 지지와의 관계: 한국과 영국 비교 연구 (The relation between perceived stress among unemployed younger adults and their level of social support: South Korea and the UK compared)

  • Objectives: This research aimed to compare perceived stress among unemployed younger adults in South Korea and the UK, particularly the relation between perceived stress levels of unemployed younger adults and their perception of their level of social support including family support and community support. Method: In order to achieve a research purpose, this study undertook a quantitative analysis of 306 unemployed younger adults in portal sites of job recruiting centers in the UK and South Korea from the period of June to July 2014. Results: The analysis found that unemployed younger adults in the UK perceived higher levels of social support, family support among social support, and community support among social support than that of South Korea. Secondly, in the UK perceived levels of social support and community support among female unemployed younger adults outweighed that of male ones. Thirdly, in the dimension of perceived stress, unemployed younger adults in two countries reported opposite results via social class.
