A low dimensional stability and poor bending strength properties were main problems in particleboard manufacturing. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of mixed wood species and urea-formaldehyde (UF) or urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) resins on the physical and mechanical properties of three-layer particleboards. The ratio of face/core/back layer was 1 : 2 : 1. The resin content of 12% for both UF resins and UMF resins (UF/MF = 70/30% w/w) was used. The results of this study showed that the utilization of S.mahagony shaving using both UF and UMF resins caused a decrease in the thickness swelling and water absorption of the boards. Thickness swellings of particleboard made of Sengon/Sengon/Sengon (SSS), Mahogany/Mahogany/Mahogany (MMM), Sengon/Mahogany/Sengon (SMS), and Mahogany/Sengon/Mahogany (MSM) were in the range of 23%, 12~16%, 14~16%, and 13~21%, respectively. The board bonded with UMF resin demonstrated better dimensional stability than that bonded with UF resin alone. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of particleboards made of S. mahagony shaving in the surface layer in both MMM and MSM boards were better than those of the SSS and SMS. MOE of MMM and MSM board was in the ranges of 24,000 to $26,000kg.cm^{-2}$ and 18,000 to $21,000kg.cm^{-2}$ respectively. Meanwhile, the MOR of board was in the ranges of 200 to $240kg.cm^{-2}$ and 190 to $228kg.cm^{-2}$, respectively.
Curing behavior and structural property of an inorganic compound added urea-formaldehyde(UF) and urea-melamine-formaldehyde(UMF) were studied. In addition, tensile strength and formaldehyde emission of plywoods made of those resin binders were studied. Curing temperature and structure were not changed, but tensile strengths of plywoods manufactured both with a UF resin and a UMF resin were decreased slightly as increased amount of inorganic compound. Formaldehyde emissions from plywoods were reduced as increased amount of inorganic compound. Wheat flour as an extender was helped to reduce of formaldehyde emission. From the result of this study it might be estimated that using appropriate amount of inorganic compound and proper resin system can be strengthened bond strength and reduced formaldehyde emission.
The change in chemical compositions of leachate and medium density fiberboard (MDF) from a laboratory-scale simulated landfill which constructed in a plastic container containing alternating layers of soil and MDF was investigated to evaluate decomposing of MDF in soil. Four treatments were conducted: 1) MDF in soil, 2) MDF only, 3) cured UF resin in soil, and 4) soil only. Molecular weight (MW) distribution of compounds in leachate from soil only treatment did not change over time. In UF resin in soil treatment, the MW distribution shifted to a lower MW distribution over time, while the peak shifted to the left indicated changing to higher MW distribution in leachate from treatment 1 and 2 contained MDF. Higher percent nitrogen in leachate was observed in MDF containing treatments due to the UF resin in the MDF. The percent carbon slightly increased in MDF only while that greatly decreased in MDF in soil treatment maybe due to bacterial activity. The percent of extractable materials from the MDF decreased greatly on day 35 compare to day 0, and subsequently did not change much on day 77. In contrast, percent holocellulose and lignin did not change much over time. No structural change of the wood fiber in MDF occurs during the study. Water-soluble materials from MDF in soil contributed the change in chemical composition of leachate.
This research was carried out to investigate the effect of paper sludge addition on formaldehyde emission, and physical and mechanical properties of UF-particleboard. In order to investigate the effect of paper sludge addition to resin, particleboards were bonded with urea-formaldehyde resins containing 5, 10, 15% paper sludge powders of three types(A Type: -200 mesh, B Type: -100~+200 mesh. C Type: -50~+100 mesh), based on weight of resin solid. Also the effect of paper sludge addition to furnish was studied from particleboards fabricated with ratios of sludge to particle of 5:95, 10:90, 15:85 based on oven-dry weight. Tests were conducted on the manufactured particleboards to determine formaldehyde emission, bending properties, internal bond strength and thickness swelling. The obtained results were summarized as follows: The addition of paper sludge powder to resin yielded a higher pH of cured resin. Formaldehyde emission decreased with the increase of paper sludge powder addition to resin and paper sludge composition ratio to furnish. Particleboard bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin containing paper sludge powder and particleboard mixed with paper sludge have similar bending properties(MOR, MOE) and thickness swelling compared with control particleboard. Internal bond strength of particleboards treated with paper sludge were lower than that of control particleboard. The use of paper sludge as scavenger was achieved reduction of formaldehyde emission without depression of physical and mechanical properties of particleboard. Also the use of paper sludge was able to concluded that there is possibility of partial substitution of wood particle materials.
Four different sources of wood-fibers from Eucalyptus, Italian poplar, hemlock, and mixed species fibers were used to study the influence of their fiber characteristics on the performance of medium density fiberboard (MDF) panels bonded with both urea-formaldehyde (UF) and phenol-formaldehyde (PF) adhesives. Included fiber characteristics were fiber length, size distribution, bulk density, and acidity. Physical and mechanical properties of MDF panels manufactured by dry process using these different fibers were determined for the comparison of board performance. Two hardwood species had a large fraction of short fibers resulting in a higher bulk density while very long hemlock fibers had lower bulk density. Fiber acidity was revealed to strongly affect the internal bond (IB) strength of MDF panels bonded with UF resins. MDF panels made from mixed species fibers showed highest IB strength of all panels prepared. UF-bonded MDF panels showed poor dimensional stability. In conclusion, the present study showed that wood-fiber characteristics such as fiber length, bulk density, and acidity affect the performance of MDF boards, and also suggested that fiber characteristics be considered for MDF panel manufacture.
In an effort to understand the hydrolytic degradation process of cured urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins responsible for the formaldehyde emission of wood-based composite panels, this study analyzed the influence of acid hydrolysis on the morphology of cured UF resins with different formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios such as 1.6, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.0. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was employed to observe both exterior and fracture surfaces on thin films of cured UF resins before and after the etching with hydrochloric acid as a simulation of the hydrolytic degradation process. FE-SEM images showed that the exterior surface of cured UF resin with the F/U mole ratio of 1.0 had spherical structures after the acid hydrolysis while the other cured UF resins were not the case. However, the fracture surface observation showed that all the samples possessed spherical structures in the cured state of UF resins although their occurrence and size decreased as the F/U mole ratio increased. For the first time, we found the spherical structures in cured UF resins of higher F/U mole ratio of 1.4. After the acid hydrolysis, the spherical structures became a much predominant at the fracture surface. These results indicated that the spherical structures in cured UF resinswere much more resistant to the hydrolytic degradation by the acid than amorphous region.
In this paper, the influence of initial formaldehyde/urea (F/U) molar ratios on the performance of low molar ratio (1.0) urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesives has been investigated. Two initial F/U molar ratios, i.e., the first and second initial molar ratios were used for the alkaline addition reaction. Three levels of the first initial F/U molar ratios (2.0, 3.0, and 4.0) and two levels of the second initial molar ratios (2.0 and 1.7) were employed to prepare a total of six UF resins with an identical final molar ratio (1.0). The basis properties, functional groups, molecular weight, crystallinity, and thermal curing properties of the UF resins were characterized in detail. Higher levels (3.0 and 4.0) of the first initial F/U molar ratio provided the UF resins with better properties (non-volatile solids content, viscosity, gelation time, pH, and specific gravity) than those of the resins prepared with the conventional level F/U molar ratio of 2.0. Statistical analysis suggested that combining the first and second initial molar ratio of 4.0 with 1.7 would result in UF resins with greater adhesion strength and lower formaldehyde emission than those of the resins prepared with other molar ratios. The results showed that higher levels of the first initial molar ratio resulted in a more branched structure, as indicated by GPC, FTIR, DSC, XRD, and greater adhesion strength than those of the other UF resins with an identical final molar ratio of 1.0.
This study was carried out to develop low density board made of rice hull which needs proper use. Urea formaldehyde adhesive(UF) was used. The raw materials were the mixtures of the rice hulls from IllFum, DongGin, ChuChong, etc. The physical and mechanical properties of rice hull insulation board were examined. The results are as follows : For the thickness of 15mm of the low density rice hull board bonded with UF resin, proper manufacturing conditions were $171^{\circ}C$ of hot pressing temperature with thickness bar for optimum density, 12 percent of resin solid contents of rice hull ovendry weight, and 20 minutes of hot pressing time. These conditions meet Korean standards(KS 3201-1982) in relation to free formaldehyde emission, bending strength, water absorption and heat resistance.
The aim of this study is to compare the adaptability of thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha technique to the canal walls in ribbon-shaped canals. Thirty resin models simulated ribbon-shape canals were instrumented to #40 using .06 taper Profile systems. Three groups of each 10 resin models were obturated by the lateral condensation technique(LC) and the two thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha technique; Ultrafil Endoset+Obtura II(EO) and Ultrafil Firmset(UF), respectively. After resin model were kept at room temperature for 4 days, they were resected horizontally with micro-tome at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5mm levels from apex. At each levels. image of resected surface were taken using CCD camera under a stereomicroscope at $\times$40 magnification and stored. Ratio of the area of gutta-percha was obtained by calculating area of gutta-percha cone to the total area of canal using digitized image-ana-Iyzing program. The data were collected then analyzed statistically using One-way ANOVA. The results were as follows. 1 At 1mm levels, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean ratio of gutta-percha among the groups. 2. At 2mm level, EO showed the highest mean ratio of gutta-percha (p<0.05) and there was no significant difference between LC and UF. 3. At 3, 4, 5mm levels, EO and UF had significantly greater mean ratio of gutta-percha than LC(p<0.05) and there was no significant difference between EO and UF. In conclusion, the thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha techniques demonstrated relatively favorable adaptability to canal walls than lateral condensation technique in ribbon-shaped canals except for 1mm level.
