This study evaluated slope stability through a case study to determine the disaster risks associated with increased deforestation in structures, including schools and apartments, located in urban areas adjacent to slopes. The slope behind the ○○ High School in Gwangju, Korea, collapsed owing to heavy rain in August 2018. Historically, rainwater drained well around the slope during the rainy season. However, during the collapse, a large amount of seepage water flowed out of the slope surface and a shallow failure occurred along the saturated soil layer. To analyze the cause of the collapse, the images of the upper area of the slope, which could not be directly identified, were captured using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A digital elevation model of the slope was constructed through image analysis, making it possible to calculate the rainfall flow direction and the area, width, and length of logging areas. The change in the instability of the slope over time owing to rainfall lasting ten days before the collapse was analyzed through numerical analysis. Imaging techniques based on the UAV images were found to be effective in analyzing ground disaster risk maps in urban areas. Furthermore, the analysis was found to predict the failure before its actual occurrence.
Under limited transmission conditions, many factors affect the efficiency of video transmission. During the flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), frequent network switching often occurs, and the channel transmission condition changes rapidly, resulting in low-video transmission efficiency. This paper presents an efficient video coding flow for UAVs working in the 5G nonstandalone network and proposes two bit controllers, including time and spatial bit controllers, in the flow. When the environment fluctuates significantly, the time bit controller adjusts the depth of the recursive codec to reduce the error propagation caused by excessive network inference. The spatial bit controller combines the spatial bit mask with the channel quality multiplier to adjust the bit allocation in space to allocate resources better and improve the efficiency of information carrying. In the spatial bit controller, a flexible mini graph is proposed to compute the channel quality multiplier. In this study, two bit controllers with end-to-end codec were combined, thereby constructing an efficient video coding flow. Many experiments have been performed in various environments. Concerning the multi-scale structural similarity index and peak signal-to-noise ratio, the performance of the coding flow is close to that of H.265 in the low bits per pixel area. With an increase in bits per pixel, the saturation bottleneck of the coding flow is at the same level as that of H.264.

The application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has recently attracted considerable interest in various areas. A three-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output concentric two-hemisphere model is proposed to characterize the scattering environment around a vehicle in an urban UAV-to-vehicle communication scenario. Multipath components of the model consisted of lineof-sight and single-bounced components. This study focused on the key parameters that determine the scatterer distribution. A time-variant process was used to analyze the nonstationarity of the proposed model. Vital statistical properties, such as the space-time-frequency correlation function, Doppler power spectral density, level-crossing rate, average fade duration, and channel capacity, were derived and analyzed. The results indicated that with an increase in the maximum scatter radius, the time correlation and level-crossing rate decreased, the frequency correlation function had a faster downward trend, and average fade duration increased. In addition, with the increase of concentration parameter, the time correlation, space correlation, and level-crossing rate increased, average fade duration decreased, and Doppler power spectral density became flatter. The proposed model was compared with current geometry-based stochastic models (GBSMs) and showed good consistency. In addition, we verified the nonstationarity in the temporal and spatial domains of the proposed model. These conclusions can be used as references in the design of more reasonable communication systems.

This research assessed the applicability of the You Only Look Once (YOLO)v8 and DeepLabv3+ models for the effective detection of compost heaps, identified as a significant source of non-point source pollution. Utilizing high-resolution imagery acquired through Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs), the study conducted a comprehensive comparison and analysis of the quantitative and qualitative performances. In the quantitative evaluation, the YOLOv8 model demonstrated superior performance across various metrics, particularly in its ability to accurately distinguish the presence or absence of covers on compost heaps. These outcomes imply that the YOLOv8 model is highly effective in the precise detection and classification of compost heaps, thereby providing a novel approach for assessing the management grades of compost heaps and contributing to non-point source pollution management. This study suggests that utilizing UAVs and deep learning technologies for detecting and managing compost heaps can address the constraints linked to traditional field survey methods, thereby facilitating the establishment of accurate and effective non-point source pollution management strategies, and contributing to the safeguarding of aquatic environments.

UAVs have been deployed various missions such as deception, reconnaissance and attack since they have been applied in battlefield and achieved missions successfully instead of man. In the past, it is impossible for UAVs to conduct autonomous missions or cooperative mission between manned aircraft due to the limitation of the technology. However, theses missions are possible owing to the advance in communication and AI Technology. In this research, we identified the possible cooperative missions between manned and unmanned team based on air-to-air mission. We studied cooperative manned and unmanned tactics about fighter sweep mission which is the core and basic operation among various air-to-air missions. We also developed cooperative tactics of manned and unmanned team by classifying nonstealth and stealth confrontational tactics. Hereafter, we verified the validity of the suggested tactics using computer simulations.

This study proposes a robust formation flight control technique of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) using behavior-based decentralized approach. The behavior-based decentralized method has various advantages because it utilizes information of neighboring UAVs only instead of information of whole UAVs in the formation maneuvering. The controllers in this paper are divided into two methods: first one is based on position and velocity of neighboring UAVs, and the other one is based on position of neighboring UAVs and passivity technique. The proposed controllers assure uniformly ultimate boundedness of closed-loops system under time varying bounded disturbances. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Recently, many studies have been conducted to use fixed-wing and rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, Drones) for topographic surveying in open-pit mines. Because the fixed-wing and rotary-wing UAVs have different characteristics such as flight height, speed, time and performance of mounted cameras, their results of topographic surveying at a same site need to be compared. This study selected a construction site in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea as a study area and compared the topographic surveying results from a fixed-wing UAV (SenseFly eBee) and a popular rotary-wing UAV (DJI Phantom2 Vision+). As results of data processing for aerial photos taken from eBee and Phantom2 Vision+, orthomosaic images and digital surface models with about 4 cm grid spacing could be generated. Comparisons of the X, Y, Z-coordinates of 7 ground control points measured by differential global positioning system and those determined by eBee and Phantom2 Vision+ revealed that the root mean squared errors of X, Y, Z-coordinates were around 10 cm, respectively.

Recently, manned and unmanned aerial vehicles are faced with problems such as collision detection and avoidance, link-loss for integrated operations in NAS. Hence, on the basis of the performance data of EUROCONTROL's BADA and NASA, an environment was developed to simultaneously handle simulations of integrated operations of MAVs and UAVs along with ATC/ATM simulations, and dynamic modeling was then carried out. To validate the developed model, simulations were performed on a 6-DOF model by its segments and the results were compared to the RMSE results.

After 'emphasizing the development of the precision reconnaissance drone' in 2021, North Korea unveiled two strategic drones in July 2023, just two years later. Despite the majority of experts offering negative assessments and stating that "the performance may not be good," North Korea can be seen as having not only enhanced its routine surveillance capabilities through strategic drones but also possessing limited long-range strike capabilities. In other words, although the performance of North Korea's strategic unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), namely the 'Satbyol-4' and '9' models, may not match that of U.S. drones, they appear to play a significant role in offsetting North Korea's considerable aerial and surveillance inferiority compared to the joint forces of South Korea and the United States. Based on these trends, North Korea seems to be concentrating on drone development to counterbalance its considerable aerial power and surveillance capabilities deficit compared to the joint forces of South Korea and the United States, especially as the global use of drones continues to increase.

Swarm of low-cost UAVs for search mission has benefit in the sense of rapid search compared to use of single high-end UAV. As the number of UAVs forming swarm increases, not only the time for the mission planning increases, but also the system to operate UAVs has excessive burden. This paper addresses a decentralized area search algorithm adequate for multiple UAVs which takes advantages of flexibility, robustness, and simplicity. To down the cost, it is assumed that each UAV has limited ability: close-communication, basic calculation, and limited memory. In close-communication, heath conditions and search information are shared. And collision avoidance and consensus of next search direction are then done. To increase weight on un-searched area and to provide overlapped search, the score function is introduced. Performance and operational characteristics of the proposed search algorithm and mission planning logic are verified via numerical simulations.
