Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted relay has the advantages of ease of deployment, good communication channels, and mobility over traditional terrestrial relay, which greatly improves wireless connectivity. In this paper, we design a UAV-enabled relay network that can utilize radio frequency bands to harvest energy from sources and utilize terahertz (THz) bands to transmit information between secondary transmitters and receivers. Next, we solve the optimal position of the UAV that maximizes the relay channel capacity, and propose an algorithm to design two trajectories of UAV (a straight and an elliptical trajectory) using the derived solution. Numerical results show that the straight trajectory is better in terms of harvested energy and channel capacity.

Many unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications have been employed for performing data collection in facilitating tasks such as surveillance and monitoring objectives in remote and dangerous environments. In light of the fact that most of the existing UAV relaying applications operate in conventional half-duplex (HD) mode, a full-duplex (FD) based UAV relay aided wireless network is investigated, in which the UAV relay helps forwarding information from the source (S) node to the destination (D). Since the activated UAV relays are always floating and flying in the air, its channel state information (CSI) as well as channel capacity is a time-variant parameter. Considering decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol in UAV relays, the cooperative relaying channel capacity is constrained by the relatively weaker one (i.e. in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR)) between S-to-relay and relay-to-D links. The channel capacity can be optimized by adaptively optimizing the transmit power of S and/or UAV relay. Furthermore, a hybrid HD/FD mode is enabled in the proposed UAV relays for adaptively optimizing the channel utilization subject to the instantaneous CSI and/or remaining self-interference (SI) levels. Numerical results show that the channel capacity of the proposed UAV relay aided wireless networks can be maximized by adaptively responding to the influence of various real-time factors.

An aerial relay system utilizing an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) or drone is addressed for event-driven operations such as temporary communication services for disaster affected area, military and first responder support. UAV relay system (URS) targets to provide a reliable communication service to a remote user equipment or an operator, therefore, a fast UAV placement to guarantee a minimum quality of service(QoS) is important when an operation is requested. Researches on UAV utilization in communication systems mostly target to derive the optimal position of UAV to maximize the performance, however, fast deployment of UAV is much more important than optimal placement under emergency situations. To this end, this paper derives the feasible area for UAV placement, investigates the effect of performance requirements on that area, and suggests UAV placement to certainly guarantee the performance requirements. Simulation results demonstrate that the feasible area derived in this paper matches that obtained by an exhaustive search.

In this paper, we propose a virtual full-duplex relaying scheme based on data ferrying using two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). By utilizing high mobility of two UAVs, the proposed relaying scheme can make each UAV communicate with a source node or a destination node when the UAV is near the source node or the destination node. The proposed relaying scheme can overcome the performance limitations of the half-duplex relaying and the implementation constraints of the full-duplex relaying. In addition, we propose an algorithm to shift the center point of two UAVs' trajectory with consideration of inter-relay interference (IRI). We show the simulation results of our proposed trajectory's center point shift algorithm. From the simulation results, it is shown that our proposed relaying scheme can achieve higher end-to-end spectral efficiency (SE) than the conventional static relaying scheme.

UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is widely used in various areas such as civil and military applications including entertainment industries. Among them, UAV based communication system is also one of the important application areas. Relays have been received much attention in communication system due to its benefits of performance enhancement and coverage extension. In this paper, we investigate UAVs as relays especially focusing on physical layer. First, we introduce the research on UAV application for the relays, then the basic performance of relay networks in dual-hop communication system is analyzed by adopting decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol. The performance is represented using symbol error rate (SER) and UAV channels are applied by assuming asymmetric environments. Based on the performance analysis, we discuss performance enhancement issues by considering physical layer.

As a new alternative communication scheme in 5G, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used as a relay in the remote base station (BS) for assistant communication. In order to ameliorate the quality of the backhaul link, a UAV backhaul transmission scheme based on improved Nash equilibrium (NE) strategy is proposed. First, the capacity of air-to-ground (A2G) channel by the link preprocess is maximized. Then, the maximum utility function of each UAV is used as the basis of obtaining NE point according to the backhaul channel and the backhaul congestion. Finally, the improved NE strategy is applied in multiple iterations until maximum utility functions of all the UAVs are reached, and the UAVs which are rejected by air-to-air (A2A) link during the process would participate in the source recovery process to construct a multi-hop backhaul network. Simulation results show that average effective backhaul rate, minimum effective backhaul rate increases by 10%, 28.5% respectively in ideal A2G channel, and 11.8%, 42.3% respectively in fading channel, comparing to pure NE strategy. And the average number of iterations is decreased by 5%.

Employing multiple drones as a swarm to complete missions can sharply improve the working efficiency and expand the scope of investigation. Remote UAV swarms utilize satellites as relays to forward investigation information. The increasing amount of data demands higher transmission rate and complex field network coding (CFNC) is deemed as an effective solution for data return. CFNC applied to UAV swarms enhances transmission efficiency by occupying only two time slots, which is less than other network coding schemes. However, conventional CFNC applied to UAVs is combined with constant coding and modulation scheme and results in a waste of spectrum resource when the channel conditions are better. In order to avoid the waste of power resources of the relay satellite and further improve spectral efficiency, a CFNC transmission scheme with MPSK modulation is proposed in this paper. For the proposed scheme, the satellite relay no longer directly forwards information, but transmits information after processing according to the current channel state. The proposed transmission scheme not only maintains throughput advantage of CFNC, but also enhances spectral efficiency, which obtains higher throughput performance. The symbol error probability (SEP) and throughput results corroborated by Monte Carlo simulation show that the proposed transmission scheme improves spectral efficiency in multiples compared to the conventional CFNC schemes. In addition, the proposed transmission scheme enhances the throughput performance for different topology structures while keeping SEP below a certain value.

The utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is expanding in various industries such as logistics, manufacturing, and transportation. However, to operate a large number of UAVs, it is imperative to first plan a secure and efficient self-configuring communication network for UAVs. In this study, we proposed a method for planning a secure and efficient UAV self-configuring communication network using Voronoi diagrams in the following three steps: 1) generating Voronoi diagrams using obstacles, 2) selecting obstacles to consider for path generation, and 3) planning the optimal path and outputting the path. The real-time feasibility of using the proposed method for planning optimal communication paths for a realistic number of UAVs was experimentally validated.

UAV has been promoted for practical use in the field of civilian and military. Recently, UAV is required high-specification performance such as long-term flight and precision observation. Among these UAVs, High Altitude Long Endurance UAV(HALE UAV) has been developed for the purpose to replace some of the functions of the satellite such as meteorological observation, communications and internet relay while flying a long period in the stratosphere. In order to fly a long period in harsh environment of the stratosphere, aircraft needs high Lift-Drag-Ratio and weight reduction of the structure. This paper performed the structural analysis for fuselage and empennage of HALE UAV. Critical loading conditions for structural analysis are acquired from flight load analysis and finally the results of structural sizing for weight reduction is presented.
