  • Steel-concrete composite structures have been extensively used in building, bridges, and other civil engineering infrastructure. Shear stud connectors between steel and concrete are essential in composite members to guarantee the effectiveness of their behavior in terms of strength and deformability. This study focuses on investigating the shear stiffness of headed studs embedded in several types of concrete with wide range of compressive strength, and their effects on the elastic behavior of steel-concrete composite girders were evaluated. Firstly, totally 206 monotonic push-out tests from the literature were reviewed to investigate the shear stiffness of headed studs embedded in various types of concrete (NC, HPC, UHPC etc.). Shear stiffness of studs is defined as the secant stiffness of the load-slip curve at 0.5Vu, and a formulation for predicting defined shear stiffness in elastic state was proposed, indicating that the stud diameter and the elastic modulus of steel and concrete are the main factors. And the shear stiffness predicted by the new formula agree well with test results for studs with a diameter ranging from 10 to 30 mm in the concrete with compressive strength ranging from 22.0 to 200.0MPa. Then, the effects of shear stiffness on the elastic behaviors of composite girders with different sizes and under different loading conditions were analyzed, the equations for calculating the stress and deformation of simply supported composite girders considering the influence of connection's shear stiffness were derived under different loading conditions using classical linear partial-interaction theory. As the increasing of shear stiffness, the stress and deflection at the most unfavorable section under partial connected condition tend to be those under full connected condition, but the approaching speed decreases gradually. Finally, the connector's shear stiffness was recommended for fully connection in composite girders with different dimensions under different loading conditions. The findings from present study may provide a reference for the prediction of shear stiffness for headed studs and the elastic design of steel-concrete composite girder.

  • A study of the sanitary quality of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and growing waters associated with raft culture in Burley Lagoon, Washington was conducted. The study was sponsored by the Agency for International Development of the U.S. Department of State. The results obtained in this study are as follows: The average values of temperature, salinity and turbidity in the water showed that the values of bottom sample were slightly higher than top samples. The difference was about $0.3^{\circ}C$ for temperature, $0.5\%_{\circ}$ for salinity and 0.1 JTU for turbidity. The changes of temperature and salinity by tide generally followed the tide cycle pattern. Sanitary indicator microorganism concentrations in top water were generally higher than those in bottom water. In general, the levels of mean coliform and fecal coliform MPN's varied inversely with tide level indicating that the sources of these groups of microorganisms are the fresh water streams flowing into the estuary. The $35^{\circ}C$ plate counts were more stable at different tide levels. Mean values of coliform and fecal coliform MPN's in oysters demonstrated that levels in top oysters were generally higher than those in bottom oysters. However, mean values of $35^{\circ}C$ Plate count in oysters did not show this pattern. The mean levels of both coliform and fecal coliform MPN's in oysters also correlated inversely with tidal level. The accumulation ratios of oysters obtained during the study period ranged from 8.6 to 19.7 for mean coliform MPN and 16.9 to 44.3 for fecal coliform MPN. According to the results obtained from present study, one suggestion could be of considerable importance for the sanitary operation in hanging culture of pacific oysters. The results indicate that harvest of the oysters at high tide would result in lower levels of indicator organisms in the shellfish.

  • Purpose - This study examines the impact of oil price volatility on economic activities in Korea. The new millennium has seen a deregulation in the crude oil market, which invited immense capital inflow into Korea. It has also raised oil price levels and volatility. Drawing on the recent theoretical literature that emphasizes the role of volatility, this paper attends to the asymmetric changes in economic growth in response to the oil price movement. This study further examines several key macroeconomic variables, such as interest rate, production, and inflation. We come to the conclusion that oil price volatility can, in some part, explain the structural changes. Research design, data, and methodology - We use two methodological frameworks in this study. First, in regards to the oil price uncertainty, we use an Exponential-GARCH (Exponential Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity: EGARCH) model estimate to elucidate the asymmetric effect of oil price shock on the conditional oil price volatility. Second, along with the estimation of the conditional volatility by the EGARCH model, we use the estimates in a VECM (Vector Error Correction Model). The study thus examines the dynamic impacts of oil price volatility on industrial production, price levels, and monetary policy responses. We also approximate the monetary policy function by the yield of monetary stabilization bond. The data collected for the study ranges from 1990: M1 to 2013: M7. In the VECM analysis section, the time span is split into two sub-periods; one from 1990 to 1999, and another from 2000 to 2013, due to the U.S. CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) deregulation on the crude oil futures that became effective in 2000. This paper intends to probe the relationship between oil price uncertainty and macroeconomic variables since the structural change in the oil market became effective. Results and Conclusions - The dynamic impulse response functions obtained from the VECM show a prolonged dampening effect of oil price volatility shock on the industrial production across all sub-periods. We also find that inflation measured by CPI rises by one standard deviation shock in response to oil price uncertainty, and lasts for the ensuing period. In addition, the impulse response functions allude that South Korea practices an expansionary monetary policy in response to oil price shocks, which stems from oil price uncertainty. Moreover, a comparison of the results of the dynamic impulse response functions from the two sub-periods suggests that the dynamic relationships have strengthened since 2000. Specifically, the results are most drastic in terms of industrial production; the impact of oil price volatility shocks has more than doubled from the year 2000 onwards. These results again indicate that the relationships between crude oil price uncertainty and Korean macroeconomic activities have been strengthened since the year2000, which resulted in a structural change in the crude oil market due to the deregulation of the crude oil futures.

  • In clinical practice, air bubbles trapped in the pit and fissure may increase early loss of sealing materials for fracture, wear and microleakage. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the bubble behavior of pit and fissure sealant. The 140 replicas made of epoxy resin were used to this experiment. Following conditioning, light-polymerized sealants were applied and then exposed to the light source. After stereoscopic examination of standarized specimen by grinding, bubble behavior was analysed. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Ultraseal $XT^{(R)}$ plus grops irrespective of using time were higher than groups of $Helioseal^{(R)}$ with clinpro tip and metal tip in the frequency of bubble(p<0.05), 2. Ultraseal $XT^{(R)}$ plus old group was more than $Clinpro^{(R)}$, Teethmate $F-l^{(R)}$ and $Helioseal^{(R)}$ with brush tip in the number of bubble under 200 magnified cross section(p<0.05). 3. The widest mean area of bubble was shown in the Teethmate $F-1^{(R)}$. 4. No statistically significant difference of the frequency and the site of bubble between $Clinpro^{(R)}$ and $Helioseal^{(R)}$ groups(p>0.05).

  • Analysis of multi-channel seismic reflection profiles acquired from the southwestern margin of Ulleung Basin reveals that the cut and fill structures, which show U-shaped or V-shaped morphology, occur on variable size. The cut and fill structure mostly consists of fine-grained sediments on the well data and is characterized by transparent or semitransparent seismic facies on the seismic section. Such cut and fill structures dominantly occur in the syn-compressional megasequence (MSQ3), which was deposited during basin deformation of late Miocene, among the four megasequences of the study area. These cut and fill structures can be divided into three groups based on their size and formation time. The cut and fill structures of Group I were formed when Dolgorae structure was active, and occurred on a small scale. The cut and fill structures of group II were formed when both Dolgorae structure and Gorae V structure were active, and the number and size of those increased compared with group I. The cut and fill structures of group III were formed when Dolgorae structure was weaken gradually but Gorae V structure kept active, and the number and size of those decreased in comparison with group II. Consequently the cut and fill structures in the southwestern margin of Ulleung basin are interpreted as submarine canyon based on spatial distribution, size and fill sediment. They were controlled by the tectonic movement in response to basin closure and tectonic-induced sediment supply variation.

  • Finding renewable and clean energy resources is essential research to solve global warming and depletion of fossil fuels in modern society. Recently, complex harvesting of energy from multiple sources is available in our living environments using a single device has become highly desirable, representing a new trend in energy technologies. We report that when simultaneously driving the fusion and composite cells of two or more types, it is possible to make an affect the other cells to obtain a greater synergistic effect. To understand the coupling effect of photovoltaic and piezoelectric device, we fabricate the serially integrated hybrid cell (s-HC) based on organic solar cell (OSC) and piezoelectric nanogenerator (PNG). The size of increased voltage peaks when OSC and PNG are working on is larger than the case when only PNG is working. This voltage difference is the Voc change of OSC, not the voltage change of PNG and current density difference between these two cases is manifested more clearly. When the OSC and PNG are working in s-HC at the same time, piezoelectric potential (VPNG) is generated in ZnO and theoretical total voltage is sum of voltage of an OSC (VOSC) and VPNG. However, electrons from OSC are influenced by piezoelectric potential in ZnO and current loss of OSC in whole circuit decreases. As a result, VOSC increases temporarily. Current shows the similar behavior. PNG acts a resistance in the whole circuit and current loss occurs when the electrons from OSC pass through the PNG. But piezoelectric potential recover current loss and decrease the resistance of PNG. Our PNG can maintain piezoelectric potential when the strain is held owing to the LDH layer while general PNG cannot maintain piezoelectric potential. During the section that strain is held, voltage enhancement effect is maintained and same effect appeared even turn off the light. Actually at this time, electrons in ZnO nanosheets move to LDH and trapped by the positive charges in this layer. After this strain is held, piezoelectric potential of ZnO nanosheets is disappeared but potential difference which is developed by negative charge dominant LDH layer is remained. This potential acts similar role like piezoelectric potential in ZnO. Electrons from the OSC also are influenced by this potential and the more current flows.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of combinations of tofu paste and non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) on the oil uptake reduction (OTR) of deep-fat fried cake doughnuts. OTR agents were tofu paste (from grinding tofu with deionized water, followed by passage through a 60 mesh sieve), and five neutral and nine anionic NSPs. A control doughnut (without tofu paste or NSP), tofu doughnut (with tofu paste) and NSP-tofu doughnut (with tofu paste and NSP) were prepared. The moisture and total lipid (TL) content, cross-section image, color characteristic, and specific volume were measured. The tofu and NSP-tofu doughnuts exhibited higher moisture and lower TL content than the control. OTR was 10.8% for the tofu doughnut, and between 13.2% and 41.2% for the NSP-tofu doughnut. The highest OTR (41.2%) was found in the NSP-tofu doughnut with a combination of tofu paste and sodium alginate (NaA). The specific volume of the NSP-tofu doughnuts with combinations of tofu paste with NaA (2.5 mL/g), locust bean gum (2.5 mL/g), and ${\kappa}$-carrageenan (2.4 mL/g) was very close to that of the control (2.6 mL/g). Considering the OTR and specific volume of doughnuts, the combination of tofu paste and NaA would be most effective in reducing the oil uptake of doughnuts during deep-fat frying.

  • In the NRC (New paradigm Reinforced Concrete) beam, steel forms, main angles used as main reinforcements, and shear angles used as basic shear reinforcements are welded and assembled in the form of vierendeel truss structures in a steel factory. After the NRC truss frame is installed at the site, additional main reinforcement and shear reinforcement are distributed. In this study, the shear performance evaluation of the NRC beam was conducted through shear tests in accordance with the type of shear reinforcement of the NRC beam (shear angle, inclined shear reinforcing bar, and U-type cover bar). As a result of the test, the initial stiffness was similar before the initial cracking of each specimen, and all specimens were shear fractured. The shear reinforcements of the specimens exhibited a yielding behavior at the time of the maximum sheat force, and the shear strengths of the specimens increased as the amount of reinforcement of the shear reinforcement increased. These results show that NRC shear reinforcements exhibit shear performance corresponding to their shear strength contribution. As a result of calculating the nominal shear strengths according to KDS 14 20 22, the experimental shear strengths of the NRC beam specimens with shear reinforcement was 37~146% larger than the nominal shear strengths, so It was evaluated as a safety side.

  • When yields the mean velocity of the closed conduit which is used generally, it is available to use Darcy Weisbach Friction Loss Head equation. But, it is inconvenient very because Friction Loss coefficient f is the function of Reynolds Number and Relative roughness (${\varepsilon}$/d). So, it is demanded more convenient equation to estimate. In order to prove the reliability and an accuracy of Chiu's velocity equation from the research which sees hereupon, proved agreement very well about measured velocity measurement data by using Laser velocimeter which is a non-insertion velocity measuring equipment from the closed conduit (Laser Doppler Velocimeter: LDV) and an insertion velocity measuring equipment and the Pitot tube which is a supersonic flow meter (Transit-Time Flowmeters). By proving theoretical linear-relation between maximum velocity and mean velocity in laboratory flume without increase and decrease of discharge, the equilibrium state of velocity in the closed conduit which reachs to equilibrium state corresponding to entropy parameter M value has a trend maintaining consistently this state. If entropy M value which is representing one section is determinated, mean velocity can be gotten only by measuring the velocity in the point appearing the maximum velocity. So, it has been proved to estimate simply discharge and it indicates that this method can be a theoretical way, which is the most important in the future, when designing, managing and operating the closed conduit.

  • Coarticulation is affected by the continuous movement of the articulator within a limited time and space through the neighboring segments and various overlaps. This study investigated the differences in coarticulation characteristics of children with reading disabilities and nondisabled children in CVC and VCV syllables consisted of stops, affricates, and vowels (a, i, u). The subjects were 13 children with reading disabilities and nondisabled children in the 2nd to 6th grades in elementary school. Two second formants were measured. One was measured at the point where the vowel began, and the other was measured at the mid point of the vowel stable section. Regression analysis was performed with F2 onset and F2 of the following vowel to obtain the locus equation (LE). 3-way ANOVA was conducted to the slope of the LE according to the groups (reading disabilities vs. nondisabled), places of articulation, and phonation types. In CVC syllable, dyslexic children showed a flatter slope than nondisabled children. With respect to the places of articulation, velar or bilabial sounds showed steeper LE slope than alveolar or palatal sounds. There were no main effects regarding group and phonation types variable for VCV syllable, and the significant differences in the places of articulation were also differed from the results for the CVC syllables. This study confirmed that dyslexic children showed a different pattern of coarticulation slope depending on the syllable structure. We also found that the higher pause rate of the dyslexic children had a stronger effect on the coarticulation in VCV structures.
