  • This study was planned to identify the effect of low-temperature stress on Alcohol dehydrogenase(ADH) isozyme in sixteen varieties of Italian ryegrass using starch gel electrophoresis. The specific electrophoretic zymograms of each variety were observed by ADH isozyme. The results were summarized as follows: 1. All tested varieties displayed two band zone by ADH and R.f values were 0.63 and 0.60, respectively. 2. There were four band type for ADH isozyme of 16 varieties classified with ADH isozyme dyeing intensity. According to dyeing intensity 7, 2, 1 and 6 varieties belong to banding type I,II,III and IV, respectively(Fig.2-A, B). 3. The effect of short tern low-temperature stress induces ADH gene expresson in Italian ryegrass, which may reflect a fundmental shift in energy metabolism to ensure plant tissue survival during the low-temperature stress period.

  • CN and CH band strengths for ten new bright giants in the globular cluster M15 have been measured from archival spectra obtained with the Multiple Mirror Telescope. Using published indices for other bright M15 giants, a CN-CH band strength anticorrelation is found for bright red giants. However, stars that do not follow the CN-CH anticorrelation are also found. They seem to show a positive correlation between the two indices. Among them, all the AGB and HB stars of the sample are included. Stars I-38 and X6, which are located near the RGB fiducial line in the CMD, have low measured CH(G) indices compared with other RGB stars. Stars IV-38, S4, and S1, which are all near the RGB tip, have strong measured CH(G) indices. Therefore, most of their evolutionary states are suspected to be different from those of a normal single RGB star.

  • The teleosts represent ancient real-bony vertebrates in phylogeny and resemble major genetic patterns to higher vertebrates. In the present study, we have defined the single family of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) from flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), compared to the prototype of IGFs observed in the Agnathan hagfish. In flounder, IGFs are clearly diverged into two major types including type I and II, and they are structurally similar by displaying a multidomain structure consisting of five functional regions as previously found in other vertebrates. However, flIGF-I appears to be more basic (pI 8.03) than the flIGF-II (pI 5.34) in the fully processed form for the B to D domain region. The flIGF-I seems to contain an evolutionary conserved Asn-linked glycosylation in E domain, which is not found in flIGFII. The most interesting feature is that flIGF-II appeared to be structurally close to hagfish IGF in secondary structures, particularly in Band D domains. This could tell us an idea on the molecular divergence of IGFs from the Agnatha to teleosts during the vertebrate phylogeny. It also support, in part, a notion regarding on how IGF-II is appeared as more embryonic during development. Nonetheless, the biologically active B to D domain region of flIGF-II shows significant sequence homology of $65.6\%$ to flIGF-Is and contains the evolutionary conserved insulin-family signature, as well as a reserved recognition site (Lys) in D domain, necessary to generate proteolytic cleavage for E-peptide. A significant structural difference was found in E domain in which flIGF-I possesses two potential alternative splicing donor site at $Val^{17,\;24}$ of E domain. Therefore, it seems so far that IGF-I sorely produces spliced variants due to the spliced E-peptide moiety while IGF-II appears to be maintained in a single type during evolution. IGF-II, however, may be also possible to transcribe unidentified variants, depending on the physiological conditions of tissues in vertebrates in vivo.

  • Background: We evaluated mid-term results of mitral annuloplasty using a flexible band and a completely rigid ring for mitral valve repair in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR). Material and Method: From January 2004 to September 2008, 71 patients (M:F=36:35, $55{\pm}13$ years) underwent mitral valve repair with mitral annuloplasty for degenerative MR. Ring annuloplasty was done using a Cosgrove-Edwards flexible band (Group I, n=43) or a Carpentier-Edwards classic ring (Group II, n=28). There were no differences in preoperative characteristics of the participants. Average duration of follow-up was 36 months (range: 2~69 mos). Result: There was no in-hospital mortality. Postoperative morbidity, which included atrial fibrillation (n=7) and low cardiac output syndrome (n=5) in groups I and II were similar. There was one late death in group II. The proportion exhibiting freedom from recurrent mitral regurgitation ($\geq$moderate) at 4 years in Groups I and II were, respectively, 94.5 and 91.8%, (p=0.695). Left ventricular ejection fraction decreased in the early postoperative period ($7{\pm}2$ days) and recovered by last follow-up ($25{\pm}16$ mos; p=0.002). The pattern was similar in groups I and II (p=0.905). Re-operation was performed in 3 patients (1 in Group I and 2 in Group II, p=0.316). Four-year event-free survival (free of adverse valve-related events) was 95.2% for Group I and 92.6% for Group II; this difference was not significant, p=0.646). Conclusion: The type of technique used in mitral annuloplasty to repair the mitral valve repair after degenerative MR did not affect mid-term clinical and functional results.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of suicide attitudes among the Korean elderly. Method: The Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. Thirty-four selected Q-statements from 38 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distributionusing a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Three types of suicide attitudes for research subjects in Korean elderly were identified. Type I is understanding suicide-self conquest and labor type, Type II is opposing suicide-family band foundation type, and Type III is sympathizing with suicide-painful situation escaping type. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that different approaches of suicide prevention programs are recommended based on the three types of suicide attitudes among Korean elderly.

  • Four imipenem-resistant bacteria were isolated from the clinical specimens of a patient with pneumonia. To identify the isolates, we used the GN card of Vitek II system and performed a phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence. The isolates were identified as P. aeruginosa (2 strains), P. monteilii (1 strain), and P. putida (1 strain), and were tested for antibiotic resistance after determining the MIC of imipenem to be $${\geq_-}8{\mu}g/mL$$ using the AST-N225 card of Vitek II system. The imipenem-resistant genotypes were determined using PCR products amplified using specific ${\beta}-Lactamase$ gene primers. The MBL gene was identified in all four isolates. One strain of P. aeruginosa exhibited the VIM and SHV-1 type genes, while the other strain exhibited both VIM and OXA group II genes. According to the antimicrobial susceptibility test, the bacteria were more susceptible to amikacin than other antibiotics. DNA fingerprint analysis using ERIC-PCR to analyze the epidemiological relationship between strains estimated that both the P. aeruginosa isolates were similar, but exhibited different DNA band types. It is uncommon to find four strains of imipenem-resistant bacteria with different DNA band types in a single patient.

  • Borate nonlinear optical crystals have been used as frequency conversion devices in many fields due to their unique transparency and nonlinearity from ultraviolet to visible spectral range. In this study, we theoretically and numerically investigate the properties of broadband second harmonic generation (SHG) in the recently reported Pna21-Ba3Mg3(BO3)3F3 (BMBF) crystal. The technique is based on the simultaneous achievement of birefringence phase matching and group velocity matching between interacting waves. We discussed all factors required for broadband SHG in the BMBF in terms of two types of phase matching and group velocity matching conditions, the beam propagation direction and the corresponding effective nonlinearity and spatial walk-off, and the spectral responses. The results show that bandwidths calculated in the broadband SHG scheme are 220.90 nm (for Type I) and 165.85 nm (for Type II) in full-width-half-maximum (FWHM). The central wavelength in each case is 2047.76 nm for Type I and 1828.66 nm for Type II at room temperature. The results were compared with the non-broadband scheme at the telecom C-band.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence, the biochemical properties and the enterotoxin types of Staphylococcus aureus in healthy human and patient. A total of 61 S. aureus strains were isolated from 142 samples. The prevalence of S. aureus isolated from healthy human and patient were 17.7% and 14.0%, respectively. All the isolates showed the production of coagulase, lecithinase and hemolysis (${\alpha}-hemolysis;\;32.8%,\;{\beta}-hemolysis;\;67.2%$) on sheep blood agar. Coagulase type VII (38.4%) and type 111 (26.0%) were dominant among coagulase types I through VIII. Twenty-four (52.2%) of 46 strains tested produced one or more enterotoxin; enterotoxin A, Band C were produced by 3, 9 and 12 strains, respectively. Enterotoxins were produced by 100% of type 11 strains, 75% of type 111 and 39.1 % of type VII. Commonly, coagulase type II produced enterotoxin B or C, and type VII produce enterotoxin C.

  • We fabricated quantum dot sensitized solar cells(QDSSC) using PbS as a sensitizer and measured the solar energy conversion efficiency. After growing ZnO nanowires on the substrate by low temperature ammonia solution reaction, PbS QDs were deposited on ZnO nanowires by SILAR(Successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction) method. The morphology and crystallinity of PbS/ZnO nanowires were studied by SEM and XRD. In this study, the maximum conversion efficiency of QDSSC using PbS was 0.075% at one sun, which was lower than that of QDSSC using other sensitizers. The reasons it showed relatively low efficiency are i) the probability of type-I band gap arrangement between ZnO and PbS, ii) disturbance of electron migration by the various-sized PbS band gap, iii) stability dip by the chemical reaction of PbS QDs with electrolyte. To solve these problems, researches about controlling the size distribution of PbS and new type electrolyte would be needed.

  • The patterns of isoperoxidase in needle-leaves of 23 species of the genus Pinus were analyzed by means of starch gel electrophoresis. Each species had a unique band pattern. In all, 56 isoperoxidase bands were identified, of which 9 to 35 isoperoxidase bands were possessed by single species. No single band was common to all Pinus species but when band patterns were grouped into 7 types, type II was considered to be the specific to genus Pinus. The results of this experiment indicated that various Pinus species had their more or less specific band patterns of peroxidase.
