To invesligate the characteristics of silica sorption on soils silica sorption experiments were conducted with 9 soils at 4 pH levels (5, 6, 7, and 8). Silica sorption increased in great extent with increase of pH. At the same pH level silica sorption increased linearly with increase of equilibrium $SiO_2$ concentration. Silica sorption characteristics was C-type. The C-type slope, i.e., the slope of linear regression of silica sorption isotherm, increased exponentially with increase of pH in all soils. Log(C-type slope) increased linearly with increase of pH in all soils. The slopes of linear regression were similar in most soils from 0.29 to 0.34 except Sachon and Jonggog soil. None of the soil properties showed any correlation with the slope of linear regression of Log(C-type slope) to pH. Only $Fe_o$ (oxalate extractable Fe oxides) was significantly correlated with the Log(C-type slope) at pH 7 in simple correlation analysis, and was shown to be the principal contributor as determined by standardized multiple linear regression.
The study on the adsorption, the surface properties and the antibacterial effects of the Ni-treated PAN based activated carbon fibers was carried out. In the adsorption study on the Ni-treated PAN based ACFs, Type I isotherms for N1-N3 and Type II-Type III isotherms for N4-N6 were obtained, respectively. Futhermore, their adsorbed volumes slowly were decreased with the increase in the mole concentration of Ni on the treated PAN based ACFs. From the BET equation, the specific surface areas of the Ni-treated PAN based ACFs were in the range of $692.58-895.24m^2/g$. The micropore volumes obtained from ${\alpha}_s$-method using common-t value were $0.19-0.56cm^3/g$. The surfaces of PAN based ACFs partially blocked by metal after the treatment were observed from the SEM micrographs. Finally, from the antibacterial effects using Shake flask method against E. coli, the percentage of the effects was 92.5-100% and the antibacterial effect was increased with the increase in mole concentration of Ni treated.
Three grades of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared from various precursors of plantic, synthetic, and mixed fabrics of viscose rayon and cotton. The ACFs an exhibited type I isotherms on the adsorption of nitrogen or argon. Micropore analysis revealed that the ACFs have uniform micropore size distribution in which their peak diameters were in the range of $5.6{\pm}0.3{\AA}$. The BET surface area of ACFs up to $1600m^2g^{-1}$ was proportional to the adsorption capacity of iodine. The BET values of the ACFs prepared were proportional to the burn-off degree of the products.
Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in 2M HCl by some benzohydrazide derivatives (I-III) was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques at $30^{\circ}C$. Polarization studies showed that all the investigated compounds are of mixed type inhibitors. Temperature studies revealed a decrease in efficiency with rise in temperature and corrosion activation energies increased in the presence of the hydrazide derivatives, probably implying that physical adsorption of cationic species may be responsible for the observed inhibition behavior. Electrochemical impedance studies showed that the presence of benzohydrazide derivatives decreases the double layer capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance. The adsorption of these compounds on carbon steel surface was found to obey Temkin's adsorption isotherm. Synergistic effects increased the inhibition efficiency in the presence of halide additives namely KI and KBr. An inhibition mechanism was proposed in terms of strongly adsorption of inhibitor molecules on carbon steel surface.
Experimental data of phase equilibria are reported for the binary mixture of 1-phenyl-2-pyrrolidone in supercritical carbon dioxide. Phase behavior data was measured in a synthetic method at a temperature ranging from 333.2 to 393.2 K and at pressures up to 97.14 MPa. The solubility of 1-phenyl-2-pyrrolidone in the carbon dioxide + 1-phenyl-2-pyrrolidone system increased as temperature increased at a constant pressure and it exhibited the type-I phase behavior. The experimental data for the binary mixture were correlated with the Peng-Robinson equation of state using mixing rule and the critical properties of 1-phenyl-2-pyrrolidone were predicted with the Joback and Lyderson method.
The effect of 2-hydroxyacetophenone-aroyl hydrazone derivatives on the inhibition of copper corrosion in 3N nitric acid solution at 303 K was investigated by galvanostatic polarization and thermometric techniques. A significant decrease in the cor rosion rate of copper was observed in the presence of the investigated compounds. The corrosion rate was found to depend on the nature and concentrations of the inhibitors. The degree of surface coverage of the adsorbed inhibitors is determined from polarization measurements, and it was found that the results obey the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. The inhibitors acted as mixed-type inhibitors, but the cathode is more polarized. The relative inhibitive efficiency of these compounds has been explained on the basis of structure dependent electron donor properties of the inhibitors and the nature of the metal-inhibitor interaction at the surface. Also, some thermodynamic data for the adsorption process ( ΔGa* and f ) are calculated and discussed.
The adsorption isotherms of N2 onto the metallic silver treated activated carbon fiber samples after acid treatment are Type I with a small amount of capillary condensation hysteresis. Increasing amount of acid treatment leads to a decrease in SBETs and external surface area. But, micropore volume and average pore diameter are presented in constant regular values with increasing amount of sulfuric acid treatment. SEM observes the surface morphology and crystal grown state of metal on the fiber surface. The results of EDX of Ag-activated carbon fiber pre-treated with acid show the spectra corresponding to almost all samples rich in silver with increasing the amount of acid treated. The FT-IR spectra of Ag-activated carbon fiber show that the acid pre-treatment is consequently associated with the homogeneous dispersion of metal with the increased surface acidity of the activated carbon fiber. The type and quality of oxygen groups are determined with Boehm titration method. From the those results, a positive influence of the acidic groups on the carbon fiber surface by acid treatment is also demonstrated by an increase in the contents of metallic silver with increasing of acidic groups.
In this study, the effects of carbonization temperature on the physico-chemical properties of Korean red-pine wood (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) powder charcoal are studied by elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and SEM techniques. The surface structure and physico-chemical properties of the wood charcoal greatly depend on the carbonization temperature and their temperature dependences for sapwood (swd) and heartwood (hwd) are qualitatively analogous. Because of the differences in characteristics such as hardness and composition between heartwood and sapwood, charcoals from heartwood have larger specific surface area and smaller average pore diameter than that from sapwood. Because the decomposition reaction mostly proceeds in the precarbonization stage, the charcoal produced in this stage mainly consists of carbon. The second carbonization reaction is insignificant but still proceeds up to $700^{\circ}C$, and the specific surface area continuously increases. Above $800^{\circ}C$, the surface area is reduced by the pore-filling and narrowing effects and especially above $900^{\circ}C$, new carbon phase with hexagonal column rooted into the pore is formed. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm of the charcoal is classified as type I and its hysteresis loop was as type H4.
The studies on the adsorption properties and the antibacterial effects of the Cd and Cu-treated activated carbon were carried out. From the adsorption studies on the series of these metal-treated activated carbons, typical Type-I isotherm was observed. The surface areas of the treated carbon obtained from BET equation were in the range of $1101-1418m^2/g$ for Cd-AC and of $1084-1361m^2/g$ for Cu-AC. Using ${\alpha}_s$-plot, the micropore volumes and pore size distribution were obtained. From the SEM study, it is also observed that many of micropores in activated carbon are blocked by window blocking effect of metals after the impregnation. Finally, antibacterial effects of M-activated carbon against Escherichia coli was discussed. From the study, the area of antibacterial activity becomes larger with the increase of the amount of metal treated.
Two-dimensionally cross-linked ultrathin films of poly(maleic acid-alt-methyl vinyl ether) (MA-MVE) and poly(allylamine) (PAA) were produced by using sodium dioctadecyl sulfate (2C18S) as the monolayer template for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) depositio n. The template molecules were subsequently removed by thermal treatment followed by extraction. The polyion-complexed monolayers of three components, i.e., template 2C18S, co-spread PAA, and subphase MA-MVE, were formed at the air-water interface. Their monolayer properties were studied by the surface pressure-area isotherm. The monolayers were transferred on solid substrates as Y type. The polyion-complexed LB films and the resulting network films were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cross-linking to form a polymer network was achieved by amide or imide formation through heat treatment under a vacuum. SEM observation of the film on a porous fluorocarbon membrane filter (pore diameter 0.1 ㎛) showed covering of the pores by four layers in the polyion complex state. Extraction by chloroform followed by heat treatment produced hole defects in the film.
