This paper deals with steady-state analysis of a single-phase line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor. In order to analyze the steady-state characteristics, the asymmetric single-phase line-start synchronous motor is converted to the symmetric two-phase synchronous motor, that is, the asymmetric magnetic field is separated from the positive and the negative symmetric components using symmetrical-component theory. The analysis method of the synchronous motor on the d-q axis coordinates is used for the positive component and the equivalent circuit of the induction motor is applied for the negative component analysis. Moreover, d-q axis inductance considering current phase angle is applied to positive component analysis for precise characteristic analysis. In order to validate the proposed analysis method, the analysis results are compared with the experimental results.

Stator tooth segmentation and back-iron segmentation is key solution to easing the burden of manufacturing process of permanent magnet synchronous motor. The purpose of this paper is the design and characteristic analysis of permanent magnet synchronous motor having the segmented phase modular stators. Using by two-dimensional finite element method, the static/no-load characteristic analysis of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is performed. The analysis has been performed considering the additional air gaps between stator modules. The analysis results were experimentally verified, and the validity of the proposed analysis method and feasibility of the machine was confirmed.
Two PWM techniques using space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) are proposed for a two-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven by a two-phase eight-switch inverter. A two-phase motor with two symmetric stator windings is usually driven by a two-phase four-, six-, or eight-switch inverter. Compared with a four- and six-switch inverter, a two-phase eight-switch inverter can achieve larger power output. For two-phase motor drives, the SVPWM technique achieves more efficient DC bus voltage utilization and less harmonic distortion of the output voltage. For a two-phase PMSM fed by a two-phase eight-switch inverter under a normal SVPWM scheme, each of the eight PWM trigger signals for the inverter have to be changed twice in a cycle, causing a higher PWM frequency. Based on the normal SVPWM scheme, two effective SVPWM schemes are investigated in order to reduce the PWM frequency by rearranging four comparison values, while achieving the same function as the normal PWM scheme. A detailed explanation of the normal and two proposed SVPWM schemes is illustrated in the paper. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed schemes achieve a better steady performance with lower switching losses compared with the normal scheme.
This paper presents a novel two-phase two-pole permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with asymmetric U-core stator structure. The construction and parameters of the novel two-phase U-core PMSM are compared with a conventional U-core single-phase PMSM (SPMSM). Then transient characteristics such as torque, back-emf, and power loss of the both PMSMs are analyzed by using 3-D Finite Element Method (FEM). Under the same condition of rated input current, synchronous speed, similar dimensions and volume, FE results show that the two-phase PMSM with U-core stator has significantly less torque ripple than single-phase U-core PMSM, with similar power loss and efficiency.
This paper proposes a method of improving the stability in sensor-less control of permanent magnet synchronous motors. The control method for low-speed region is divided into two: One is a high frequency method, which involves a problem of reverse rotation once misdetection of the permanent magnet polarity should occur, and another one is a current drive method, which has a problem that phase and speed oscillations are caused by quick speed changes. Hence, authors propose adoption of the current drive method for the basic control system with added compensation of stabilization by means of the high frequency method. This combination secures stable control with no risk of reversal and less vibration. In addition, authors have also considered a frequency separation filter of a shorter delay time so that current control performance will not lower even when high frequencies are introduced. This filter has achieved simplified compensation using repetitive characteristic through the utilization of the periodicity of high frequency current. Simulation and experiment have been conducted to verify that the stable performance of this system is improved.
The research related to fault diagnosis in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) has attracted considerable attention in recent years because various faults such as permanent magnet demagnetization and short-circuited turns can occur and result in unexpected failure of motor related system. Several conventional current and back electromotive force (BEMF) analysis techniques were proposed to detect certain faults in PMSMs; however, they generally deal with a single fault only. On the contrary, cases of multiple faults are common in PMSMs. We propose a fault diagnosis method for PMSMs with single and multiple combined faults. Our method uses three phase BEMF voltages based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT), support vector machine(SVM), and visualization tools for identifying fault types and severities in PMSMs. Principal component analysis (PCA) and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) are used to visualize the high-dimensional data into two-dimensional space. Experimental results show good visualization performance and high classification accuracy to identify fault types and severities for single and multiple faults in PMSMs.

This paper presents the results of driving performance analysis of permanent magnet synchronous motor using a microprocessor based control system. The system consists of three phase power transistor inverters, three phase controlled rectifier, three central processing units, and sensors. The three CPUs are, respectively, used to generate PWM control signals for the inverter generating three phase sine wave, to generate the gate control signals for firing the converter, and to supervise other two CPUs. The supervisor is used to compute PI control algtorithm to three phase reference sine wave for the inverter. It is also used to maintain a constant voltage frequency ratio for the converter operating as a constant torque controller. The inverter CPU retrieves precomputed PWM patterns from look up tables because of computation speed limitations found in almost available microprocessors. The converter CPU also retrieves precomputed gate control patterns from another look-up tables. For protecting the control ststem from any damage by extraordinary over currents, the supervisor receives the data from current sensor, CT, and break down the CB to isolate the circuits from source. A resolver has a good performance characteristics of overall speed range, especially on low speed range. Therefor the speed control accuracy is impoved. The microprocessor based PM synchronous motor control system, thus, has many advantages such as constant torque characteristics, improvement of wave, limitation on extraordinary over currents, improvement of speed control accuracy, and fast response speed control using multi-CPU and look-up tables.
This paper reports an investigation of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques for twophase brushless DC (BLDC) motors fed by a two-phase eight-switch inverter in a fan application. The three-phase BLDC motor is widely applied in industry; however, a lower-cost two-phase BLDC motor and drive circuit has been greatly in demand in recent years. In this paper, we introduce a mathematical model of the two-phase BLDC motor with sinusoidal back electromotive forces (EMFs) based on traditional three-phase BLDC motors. To simplify the drive algorithm and speed up its application, we analyze the principle of block commutation for a two-phase BLDC motor drive in the 180-electricaldegree conduction mode, and we further propose five PWM schemes to improve the commutation performance of the two-phase BLDC drive. The effectiveness of the proposed PWM methods is verified through experiments.

This paper proposes a coordinated control for an independent multi-phase transverse flux linear synchronous motor (IM-TFLSM) based on magnetic levitation. The stator structures of the IM-TFLSM are composed of a two set, which has independent three-phase windings and a double-sided air-gap as opposed to the conventional Y-connected three-phase linear motors. A suitable control algorithm is necessary to operate the applied linear machine. This study proposes a coordinated control algorithm for adjusting the mover air-gap and thrust force of the IM-TFLSM in order to maintain air-gap and phase shifted current control of the independent 3-phase modules. In addition, the principle of operation and its special structures are described in detail and the validity and effectiveness of the control algorithm is verified through multiple experimental results.
This paper deals with the analysis on eddy current looses of high speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for turbo compressor according to voltage source driving. This paper presents analytical procedures for calculation of the eddy current losses using Poynting theorem. On the basis of the magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2-D) cylindrical coordinate system, this paper derived analytical solutions of the eddy current looses using phase current analysis. The eddy current losses of each harmonic obtained by fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of phase current are with results obtained from finite-element method (FEM).
