  • A rapid expansion of the moist air or stream through transonic nozzle often leads to not-equilibrium condensation shock, causing a considerable amount of energy loss to the entire flow field. Depending on amount of heat released, condensation shock wave occurs in the nozzle and interacts with the boundary layer flow. In the current study, a passive control technique using a porous wall with a plenum cavity underneath is applied for purpose of alleviation the condensation shock wave in a transonic nozzle. A droplet growth equation is incorporated into two-dimensional wavier-Stokes equation systems. Computations are carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order fractional time step. An experiment using an indraft transonic wind tunnel is made to validate the present computational results. The results obtained show that the magnitude of condensation shock wave is reduced by the current passive control method.

  • In order to determine whether three-dimensional effects exist in a pintle nozzle of axisymmetric shape, a three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed. The compressibility correction was implemented with the k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model to predict the complex flow separation transition in acceptable accuracy. Recirculation zones were observed at both the front end and rear faces of the pintle, and the flow through the pintle nozzle conveyed complex shock wave structures. Three-dimensional effects that resulted from the reasonable flow separation location were noted, and a trace of the transient pressure increase was observed, mismatched by a two-dimensional axi-symmetric analysis.

  • An experimental study has been carried out for jet-impingement cooling on the semi-circular concave surface. Two different nozzles(round edged nozzle and rectangular edged nozzle) are utilized and heat transfer coefficients on the concave surface have been measured under a constant heat flux condition. The characteristics of heat transfer has been discussed in conjunction with measured jet flow. Velocity and turbulence intensity of free jets issuing from two different nozzles have been measured by Laser Doppler Anemometry and theromocouple measurements have been done for temperatures on the concave surface. The effects of the nozzle shape, the distance between the nozzle exit and the stagnation point of the surface and the nozzle exit velocity on heat transfer were studied.

  • This paper presents a numerical study for unsteady flows in a high-pressure steam turbine with a partial admission stage. Compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the high-order high-resolution finite-difference method based on the fourth-order compact MUSCL TVD scheme, Roe's approximate Riemann solver, and the LU-SGS scheme. The SST-model is also solved for evaluating the eddy-viscosity. The unsteady two-dimensional flows through whole nozzle-rotor cascade channels considering a partial admission are numerically investigated. 108 nozzle passages with two blockages and 60 rotor passages are simultaneously calculated. The influence of the flange in the nozzle box to the lift of rotors is predicted. Also the efficiency of the partial admission stage changing the number of blockages and the number of nozzles is parametrically predicted.

  • Low head hydropower is one of realistic renewable energies. The Darrieus-type hydro turbine with an inlet nozzle is available for such low head conditions because of its simple structure with easy maintenance. Experimental and numerical studies are carried out in order to examine the effects of gap distances between the runner pitch circle and two edges of inlet nozzle on turbine performances. By selecting narrower gaps of left and right edges, the performance could be improved. From the results of two dimensional numerical simulations, the relation between the performance and flow behaviors around the Darrieus blade are discussed to obtain the guideline of appropriate inlet nozzle design.

  • A rectangular type circulating fluidized bed (CFB) with an internal nozzle and two partition walls was proposed. In this modified CFB, an internal nozzle and two slanted partition walls were additionally set in the riser. This cold mode apparatus was made of acrylic resin; the riser was 1500mm high and $1000{\times}1000mm^2$ in the cross sectional area, the internal nozzle was 200mm high and 10mm in the inner diameter, and the partition wall was 7mm thick. Glass beads of $91{\mu}m$ in the mean diameter were employed as bed materials. In the cold mode by using the proposed CFB with an internal nozzle, it was possible to change the particle hold up by changing the gas flow ratio of the nozzle to the total(Qn/Qt). It was found that the inflection point which devided the bed structure between the dense and the dilute phase in the riser varied with Qn/Qt.

  • Highly over-expanded nozzle of the rocket engines will be excited by non-axial forces due to flow separation at sea level operations. Since rocket engines are designed to produce axial thrust to power the vehicle, non-axial static and/or dynamic forces are not desirable. Several engine failures were attributed to the side loads. Present work investigate the unsteady flow in an over-expanded rocket nozzle in order to estimate side load during a shutdown/starting. Numerical computations has been carried out with density based solver on multi-block structured grid. Present solver is explicit in time and unsteady time step is calculated using dual time step approach. AUSMDV is considered as a numerical scheme for the flux calculations. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. Results presented here is for two nozzle pressure ratio i.e. 100 and 20. At 100 NPR, restricted shock separation (RSS) pattern is observed while, 20 NPR shows free shock separation (FSS) pattern. Side load is observed during the transition of separation pattern at different NPR.

  • The air flow and heat transfer characteristics of an air jet impinging on a pedestal heat source has been investigated numerically to examine the effects of geometric parameters such as nozzle-to-pedestal spacing, nozzle diameter and pedestal size. Also, the parameters of Reynolds number, air jet power, supplied heat and thermal conductivity of pedestal have been studied to reveal how these affect the average Nusselt number. Hence, a two-dimensional turbulent model has been developed and adopted to simulate the fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena numerically. The results obtained from the model show that the nozzle-to-pedestal spacing, relative size of nozzle to pedestal and Reynolds number of air jet have a significant influence on the cooling characteristics of heated pedestal. Furthermore, some useful guidelines could be given to the application of cooling the heated pedestal.

  • The flow characteristics of unventilated dual impinging jets were experimentally investigated. Two nozzles with an aspect ratio of 20 were separated by 6 nozzle widths. The Reynolds number based on nozzle width and nozzle exit velocity was set to 5,000. A Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure turbulent velocity components. It was found that, when an impingement plate was installed in the converging region, there was a stagnation region in the inner area between nozzles. However, when it was installed in the combined region, both jets were merged and collided into the plate, showing single-jet characteristics. In addition, at a dual impinging jet, as the distance between a nozzle and an impingement plate decreased, the spanwise turbulent intensity at the plate increased.

  • In this study, a liquid sheet type co-axial nozzle has been used to investigate the turbulent atomization characteristics which could result in the experimental data to be used in designing a jet nozzle with high performance. Image processing technique and immersion sampling method were employed to measure droplet size. In atomizing characteristics, droplet size distributions and absolute droplet sizes, SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) have been investigated in the wide ranges of flow field depending upon the air-water mass ratios. And the comparisons between the present data and the semi-empirical curves have been conducted semi-empirical correlation for SMD has been derived in the present analysis.
