Upper ocean response to typhoon Ewiniar (0603) and its impact on the following typhoon Bilis (0604) are investigated using observational data and numerical experiments. Data used in this study are obtained from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS), ARGO, and satellite. Numerical simulations are conducted using 3-dimensional Princeton Ocean Model. Results show that when Ewiniar passes over the western North Pacific, unique oceanic responses are found at two places, One is in East China Sea near Taiwan and another is in the vicinity of IORS. The latter are characterized by a strong sea surface cooling (SSC), $6^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ in simulation and observation, under the condition of typhoon with a fast translation speed (8m $s^{-1}$) and lowering intensity (970 hPa). The record-breaking strong SSC is caused by the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, which produces a strong vertical temperature gradient within a shallow depth of Yellow Sea. The former are also characterized by a strong SSC, $7.5^{\circ}C$ in simulation, with a additional cooling of $4.5^{\circ}C$ after a storm's passage mainly due to enhanced and maintained upwelling process by the resonance coupling of storm translation speed and the gravest mode internal wave phase speed. The numerical simulation reveals that the Ewiniar produced a unfavorable upper-ocean thermal condition, which eventually inhibited the intensification of the following typhoon Bilis. Statistics show that 9% of the typhoons in western North Pacific are influenced by cold wakes produced by a proceeding typhoon. These overall results demonstrate that upper ocean response to a typhoon even after the passage is also important factor to be considered for an accurate intensity prediction of a following typhoon with similar track.
The objective of study was to determine an optimal location of a float-type curtain weir in Daecheong Reservoir and to assess its effectiveness for the control of algal blooms in the reservoir. CE-QUAL-W2, a laterally averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model, was modified to accommodate vertical displacement of the weir according to water surface fluctuation and applied to simulate the reservoir hydrodynamics and water quality changes for the reservoir. The model calibrated in a previous study was updated and validated for different hydrological conditions representing drought year (2008) and normal year (2006) for the study, and adequately simulated the temporal and spatial variations of water temperature, nutrients and algal (Chl-a) concentrations. The effectiveness of curtain weir on the control of algal bloom was evaluated by applying the validated model to 2001 and 2006 assuming 9 scenarios for different installation locations. The reduction rates of algal concentration were placed in the range of 11.2~40.3% and 20.3~56.7% for 2001 and 2006, respectively. Although, the performance of curtain weir was slightly varied for different locations and different hydrological years, overall, the performance was improved as the weir was installed further downstream.
Graphene is a perfectly two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystal which consists of sp2 bonded carbon atoms like a honeycomb lattice. With its unique structure, graphene provides outstanding electrical, mechanical, and optical properties, thus enabling wide variety of applications including a strong potential to extend the technology beyond the conventional Si based electronic materials. Currently, the widespread application for electrostatically switchable devices is limited by its characteristic of zero-energy gap and complex process in its synthesis. Several groups have investigated nanoribbon, strained, or nanomeshed graphenes to induce a band gap. Among various techniques to synthesize graphene, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is suited to make relatively large scale growth of graphene layers. Direct growth of graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using CVD has gained much attention as the atomically smooth surface, relatively small lattice mismatch (~1.7%) of h-BN provides good quality graphene with high mobility. In addition, induced band gap of graphene on h-BN has been demonstrated to a meaningful value about ~0.5 eV.[1] In this paper, we report the synthesis of grpahene / h-BN bilayer in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process by controlling the gas flux ratio and deposition rate with temperature. The h-BN (99.99%) substrate, pure Ar as carrier gas, and $CH_4$ are used to grow graphene. The number of graphene layer grown on the h-BN tends to be proportional to growth time and $CH_4$ gas flow rate. Epitaxially grown graphene on h-BN are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.
In order to study the reaction behaviors of bovine $\alpha$-lactalbumin ($\alpha$-La), $\beta$-lactoglobulin ($\beta$-Lg), and their mixtures during heat treatment, samples were analyzed using native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Native-PAGE), sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)-PAGE, and two-dimensional (2-D)-PAGE. The electrophoresis demonstrated that the loss of native-$\alpha$-La increased as temperature increased, and that the loss of apo-$\alpha$-La was slightly higher than that of holo-$\alpha$-La. The tests also showed that during heat treatment, a mixture of $\alpha$-La and $\beta$-Lg was less stable than $\alpha$-La alone. As such, it was assumed that $\beta$-Lg induced holo-$\alpha$-La to be less stable than apo-$\alpha$-La during heat treatment. The reaction behavior of $\alpha$-La (holo-, apo-form) during heat treatment showed similar patterns in the 2-D-PAGE electropherogram, but the mixture of $\alpha$-La and $\beta$-Lg created new bands. In particular, the results showed a greater loss of native $\alpha$-La in the holo-$\alpha$-La and $\beta$-Lg mixture than in the apo-$\alpha$-La and $\beta$-Lg mixture. Thus, it can be concluded that the holo-$\alpha$-La and $\beta$-Lg mixture was more intensively affected by heat treatment than other samples, and that free sulphydryl groups took part in the heat-induced denaturation.
The nano/micro composites with highly porous surface area have attracted of great interest, particularly the synthesis of porous and thin film sheets of high performance. In this paper, an easy method of cost-effective synthesis of thin film ceramic fiber membranes based on Hydroxyapatite, and activated carbon by turned into studied to be applied within the service-facilitated the transport of radioactive waste such as $^{90}Sr$, $^{137}Cs$ and $^{60}Co$) as activated product of radioisotopes from ETRR-2 research reactor and dissolved in 3M $HNO_3$, across a thin flat-sheet supported liquid membrane (TFSSLM). Radionuclides are transported from alkaline pH values. The presence of sodium salts in the aqueous media improves in $HNO_3$, the lowering of permeability because the initial $HNO_3$ concentration is improved. The study some parameters on the thin sheet ceramic supported liquid membrane. EDTA as stripping phase concentration, time of extraction and temperature were studied. The study of maximum permeability of radioisotopes for all parameters. The pertraction of a radioactive waste solution from nitrate medium were examined at the optimized conditions. Under the optimum experimental 98.6-99.9% of $^{90}Sr$, 79.65-80.3% of $^{137}Cs$ and $^{60}Co$ 45.5-55.5% in 90-110 min with were extracted in 10-30 min, respectively. The process of diffusion in liquid membranes is governed by the chemical diffusion process.

This paper presents a conceptual design and analysis for a 1-kW-class high-temperature superconducting rotating machine (HTSRM) rotor. The designed prototype is a small-scale integration system of a HTSRM and a HTS contactless rotary excitation device (CRED). Technically, CRED and HTSRM are connected in the same shaft, and it effectively charges the HTS coils of the rotor field winding by pumping fluxes via a non-contact method. HTS coils in rotor pole body and toroidal HTS wire in CRED rotor are cooled and operated by liquid nitrogen in cryogen tank located in inner-most of rotor. Therefore, it is crucial to securely maintain the thermal stability of cryogenic environment inside rotor. Especially, we critically consider not only on mechanical characteristics of the rotor but also on cryogenic thermal characteristics. In this paper, we conduct two main tasks covering optimizing a conceptual design and performing operational characteristics. First, rotor parameters are conceptually designed by analytical design codes. These parameters consider to mechanical and thermal performances such as mechanical strength, mechanical rigidity, and thermal heat losses of the rotor. Second, mechanical and thermal characteristics of rotor for 1-kW-class HTSRM are analyzed to verify the feasible operation conditions. Hence, three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) method is used to perform these analyses in ANSYS-Workbench platform.
NiO supported on zirconia modified with $MoO_3$ for acid catalysis was prepared by drying powdered $Ni(OH)_2-Zr(OH)_4$ with ammonium heptamolybdate aqueous solution, followed by calcining in air at high temperature. The characterization of prepared catalysts was performed using FTIR, Raman, XRD, and DSC. $MoO_3$ equal to or less than 15 wt% was dispersed on the surface of catalyst as two-dimensional polymolybdate or monomolybdate, while for $MoO_3$ above 15 wt%, crystalline orthorhombic phase of $MoO_3$ was formed, showing that the critical dispersion capacity of $MoO_3$ on the surface of catalyst is 0.18 g/g NiO-$ZrO_2$ on the basis of XRD analysis. Acidity and catalytic activities for acid catalysis increased with the amount of dispersed $MoO_3$. The high acid strength and acidity was responsible for the Mo=O bond nature of the complex formed by the interaction between $MoO_3$ and $ZrO_2$. The catalytic activity for acid catalysis was correlated with the acidity of the catalysts measured by the ammonia chemisorption method.
Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a material with a wide bandgap (3.26eV), a high critical electric field (~2.3MV/cm), a and a high bulk electron mobility ($\sim900cm^2/Vs$). These electronic properties allow high breakdown voltage, high-speed switching capability, and high temperature operation compared to Si devices. Although various SiC DMOSFET structures have been reported so far for optimizing performances, the effect of channel dimension on the switching performance of SiC DMOSFETs has not been extensively examined. This paper studies different channel dimensons ($L_{CH}$ : $0.5{\mu}m$, $1\;{\mu}m$, $1.5\;{\mu}m$) and their effect on the the device transient characteristics. The key design parameters for SiC DMOSFETs have been optimized and a physics-based two-dimensional (2-D) mixed device and circuit simulator by Silvaco Inc. has been used to understand the relationship. with the switching characteristics. To investigate transient characteristic of the device, mixed-mode simulation has been performed, where the solution of the basic transport equations for the 2-D device structures is directly embedded into the solution procedure for the circuit equations. We observe an increase in the turn-on and turn-off time with increasing the channel length. The switching time in 4H-SiC DMOSFETs have been found to be seriously affected by the various intrinsic parasitic components, such as gate-source capacitance and channel resistance. The intrinsic parasitic components relate to the delay time required for the carrier transit from source to drain. Therefore, improvement of switching speed in 4H-SiC DMOSFETs is essential to reduce the gate-source capacitance and channel resistance.
