  • The turbulent structures of the free plane jet and two dimensional impinging jet are investigated experimentally. In order to get the two dimensional jet, the contour of the cubic equation suggested by Morel is used for a contracting nozzle. A linearized constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is used for measurement. Mean velocities and turbulent intensities are measured along the centerline of the jet. Jet halp width spatial double velocity correlation coefficients and integral length scales are obtained. It is established that the free plane jet is truly self-preserving about 40 slot widths downstream of the nozzle. The experiments for the impinging jet are carried out at four different impingement wall locations within the self-preserving region of the free plane jet, and comparing the results with that of free plane jet, the mean velocity is changed in the region of 0.25H and turbulent intensities are affected in the region of 0.2H from the wall, respectively, where H means the distance between the nozzle exit and the wall.

  • This paper presents the performance and problems in analysis method and testing system of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) method, in measuring two-dimensional in-plane displacement. The anyalysis result of measurement by ESPI is quite comparable to that of measurement by strain gauge method. This implieds that the method of ESPI is a very effective tool in non-contact two-dimensional in-planc strain analysis. But there is a controversal point, measurment error. This error is discussed to be affected not by ESPI method itseif, but by its analysis scheme of the interference fringe, where the first-order interpolation has been applied to the points of strain measured. In this case, it is turned out that the more errors would be occured in the large interval of fringe. so, this paper describes a computer method for drawing when the height is available only for some arbitary collection of points, the method is based on a distance-weighted, least-squares approximation technique, with the weight varying with the distance of the data points.

  • This paper presents a three dimensional modeling and dynamic analysis of a hydraulic excavator. An excavator composed of a boom, a bucket, two boom cylinders, an arm cylinder, and a bucket cylinder is used for the analysis. Each cylinder is modeled to two separate bodies linked by a translational joint. Judging from the actual degrees of freedom of the excavator, proper kinematic joints are selected to exclude redundant constraints in the modeling. In order to find the reaction forces at kinematic joints during operations, inverse dynamic analysis is carried out. Dynamic analysis is also carried out to verify the results from inverse dynamic analysis. The DADS program is used for analysis, with proper modification of the DADS user routine according to various motions.

  • The design variables for structural systems, in most practical designs, are chosen from a list of discrete values, which are commercially available sizing. This paper presents the application of Genetic Algorithms for determining the optimum design for two-dimensional structures with discrete and pseudocontinuous design variables. Genetic Algorithms are heuristic search algorithms and are effective tools for finding global solutions for discrete optimization. In this paper, Genetic Algorithms are used as the method of Elitism and penalty parameters, in order to improve fitness in the reproduction process. Examples in this paper include: 10 bar planar truss and 1 bay 8-story frame. Truss with discrete and pseudoucontinuous design variables and steel frame with W-sections are used for the design of discrete optimization.

  • The vector field histogram(VFH) uses a two-dimensional Cartesian histogram grid as a world model. The VFH method subsequently employs a two-stage data-reduction process in order to compute the desired control commands for the vehicle. In the first stage the histogram grid is reduced to a one dimensional polar histogram that is constructed around the robot's momentary location. Each sector in the polar histogram contains a value representing the polar obstacle density in that direction. In the second stage, the algorithm selects the most suitable sector from among all polar histogram sectors with a low polar obstacle density, and the steering of the robot is aligned with that direction. We applied this algorithm to our four-legged robot.

  • This research concentrates on the influence of non-linearities associated with impact for the nonlinear rocking behavior of rigid block subjected to one dimensional sinusoidal excitation of horizontal direction. The transition of two governing rocking equations, the abrupt reduction in the kinetic energy associated with impact, and sliding motion of block. In this study, two type of rocking vibration system are considered. One is the undamped rocking vibration system, disregarding energy dissipation at impact and the other is the damped rocking system, including energy dissipation and sliding motion. The response analysis using non-dimensional rocking equation is carried out for the change of excitation parameters and friction coefficient. The chaos responses were discovered in the wide response region, particularly, for the case of high excitation amplitude and their chaos characteristics were examined by the time history, Poincare map, power spectra and Lyapunov Exponent of rocking responses. The complex behavior of chaos response, in the phase space, were illustrated by Poincare map. The bifurcation diagram and Poincare map were shown to be effective in order to understand chaos of rocking system.

  • In this paper, the algorithms which can track the two dimensional moving circular object using simple vision system are described. In order to track the moving object, the process of finding the object feature points - such as centroid of the object, corner points, area - is indispensable. With the assumption of two-dimensional circular moving object, the centroid of the circular object is computed from three points on the object circumference. Different kinds of algorithms for computing three edge points - simple x directional detection method, stick method. T-shape method are suggested. Through the computer simulation and experiments, three algorithms are compared from the viewpoint of detection accuracy and computational time efficiency.

  • Aortic annulus size was measured by two-dimensional echocardiography [2DE] in 29 patients undergoing aortic valve replacement or double valve replacement in order to predict prosthetic aortic valve size. Fifteen patients had aortic stenoinsufficiency, eleven had aortic insufficiency, and three had aortic stenosis. 2DE measurements of aortic annulus diameter, as determined from the parasternal long-axis view, demonstrated a high correlation with actual prosthetic valve size implanted at surgery [r=0.85, p<0.05]. 2DE exactly predicted actual prosthetic valve size in 8 of 29 patients [27.6%], was within 1mm of prosthetic valve size in 11 of 29 patients [37.9%], was within 2mm of prosthetic valve size in 8 of 29 patients, and was within 3mm of prosthetic valve size in 2 patients.

  • Nuts are one of the most common sources of allergies in individuals of all ages. In order for a particular protein to render an allergic reaction, it must resist proteolytic digestion by intestinal enzymes. In this study, three well-known allergenic nuts, almonds, cashew nuts, and peanuts, were used as samples, and enzyme digestion with Bacillus protease and porcine pepsin was tested. A proteomic approach using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and an MS/MS analysis was applied to visualize and identify the proteins that were resistant to enzyme digestion. Among the 150 protein spots tested, 42 proteins were assigned functions. Due to the lack of genomic databases, 41% of the identified proteins were grouped as hypothetical. However, 12% of them were well-known allergens, including AraH. The remainder were grouped as storage, enzymes, and binding proteins.

  • This work presents a time-truncation scheme, based on the Lagrange interpolation polynomial, for the solution of the two-dimensional scalar wave problem by the time-domain boundary element method. The aim is to reduce the number of stored matrices, due to the convolution integral performed from the initial time to the current time, and to keep a compromise between computational economy and efficiency and the numerical accuracy. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed formulation, three examples are presented and discussed at the end of the article.
