  • Bit patterned media (BPM) is a high capacity storage system and has attracted a great deal of attention as next generation data storage. When BPM is made with high density, the space between the islands narrows, because BPM records one bit in an island. For this reason, BPM has inter-symbol interference in all directions, unlike in current storage systems where it is in only one direction. In this paper, we propose an equation for compensating two-dimensional ISI. We conduct experiments on track misregistration. When using the proposed inter-symbol interference preprocessing, the BER performance is improved, regardless of the amount of track misregistration.

  • We introduce two-dimensional soft output Viterbi algorithm (2D SOVA) and iterative 2D SOVA for holographic data storage. Since the holographic data storage is 2D intersymbol interference (ISI) channel, the 2D detection schemes have good performance at holographic data storage. The 2D SOVA and iterative 2D SOVA are 2D detection schemes. We introduce and compare the two 2D detection schemes. The 2D SOVA is approximately 2 dB better than one-dimensional (1D) detection scheme, and iterative 2D SOVA is approximately 1 dB better than the 2D SOVA. In contrast, the iterative 2D SOVA is approximately twice complex higher than 2D SOVA, and 2D SOVA is approximately twice complex higher than 1D detection scheme.

  • We introduce an error correcting 4/6 modulation codes for holographic data storage, and simulate under adding mis-alignment noise. The holographic data storage has two-dimensional intersymbol interference. To increase the channel performance, it is necessary to use modulation code. Furthermore, if the modulation code has trellis structure, error correcting capability is added. The error correcting 4/6 modulation code shows better performance than conventional modulation codes with and without mis-alignment noise.

  • Holographic data storage system is affected by two dimensional intersymbol interference and inter-page interference. Especially, for multi-level holographic data storage system, since one pixel contains more than 1 bit, the system is more vulnerable to the error. In this paper, we propose a 2/3 modulation code for 4-level holographic data storage system. The proposed modulation code with error correcting capability could be compensated these interferences. Also, in this paper, we proposed a Viterbi decoder for 2/3 modulation code. The proposed Viterbi decoder eliminates unnecessary calculation. As a result, proposed 2/3 modulation code and Viterbi decoder has shown better performance than conventional one.

  • In holographic data storage systems, data is recorded and read by page on a volume of storage medium, and it can increase transmission rate and storage capacity because of two-dimensional page-oriented data processing by charge-coupled devices. However, HDS suffers two-dimensional intersymbol interference unlike conventional data storages. In this paper, we propose a preprocessing method of decreasing ISI before read data in HDS pass to detector. This method has some advantage when we collaborate with the preprocessing for reducing misalignment error and modulation code.

  • Since holographic data storage has the advantage of high recording density and data transfer rate, it is a candidate for the next generation storage systems. However, Holographic data storage system is affected by interpage interference and two dimensional intersymbol interference. Also, burst error occurs by physical impact. In this paper, we propose an LDPC product code using modified log-likelihood ratio and extrinsic information to correct burst error and improve performance of holographic data storage. The performance of proposed LDPC product code is 0.5dB better than that of the conventional LDPC code.

  • In this paper, to eliminate intersymbol interference of the received signal due to multipath propagation, a parallel equalization algorithm using two error estimation functions is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, multilevel two-dimensional signals are considered as equivalent binary signals, then error signals are estimated using the sigmoid nonlinearity effective at the initial phase equalization and threshold nonlinearity with high steady-state performance. The two errors are scaled by a weight depending on the relative accuracy of the two error estimations, then two filters are updated differentially. As a result, the combined output of two filters was to be the optimum value, fast convergence at initial stage of equalization and low steady-state error level were achieved at the same time thanks to the combining effect of two operation modes smoothly. Usefulness of the proposed algorithm was verified and compared with the conventional method through computer simulations.
