The composite frame system with reinforced concrete column and steel beam can be improved in its structural efficiency by complementing the shortcomings of the two systems. The system, however, has many inherent problems in practical design and construction process due to the dissimilarities of the materials. Considering these circumstance, this research aims for the development of a composite structural system which connects the steel beams to the R/C columns with higher structural safety and economy. Basically, the proposed connection system is composed of four split tees, structural angles reinforced by a stiffener, high strength steel rods, connecting plates and shear plates. Structural tests have been carried out to investigate the moment transfer mechanism 1Tom the beam flange to steel rods or connecting plates through the structural angle reinforced by a stiffener. The four prototype specimens have been tested until the flange of the beam reached a plastic state. The test results indicated that no distinct material dissimilarities between concrete and steel have been detected for the proposed hybrid beam-column connection system and that the stress transfer through the structural angle between the beam flange and steel rods or connecting plates was very encouraging.

The fuel rods in the pressurized water reactor are continuously supported by a spring system called a spacer grid which is one of the main structural components for the fuel rod cluster (fuel assembly). The fuel rods are vibrating within the reactor due to coolant flow. Since the vibration, what is called flow-induced vibration(FIV), can wear away the surface of the fuel rod, it is important to understand the vibration characteristics of it. In this paper, the vibration analyses and the tests for the dummy rods supported by New Doublet(ND) spacer grids are described. A new FE model which reflects the contact area between the rod and ND spacer grid spring is developed to replace the previous one by which a good agreement could not be obtained with the vibration test. The natural frequency and mode shape calculated by both the previous FE model and the new one are compared with those of experiment fur a single-spanned rod supported by two ND spacer grids. The results by the new model show good agreement to experiment as compared with the ones by previous model. In addition, the new FE model is applied to the vibration analysis fur the dummy rod of 2.19 m tall continuously supported by five ND spacer grids. It is also obtained that the analysis results by the new FE model well agree to experiment ones as the single-spanned rod.

The shear wave velocity ($V_s$) has been commonly used to evaluate the dynamic properties of soil. The field $V_s$ probe (FVP) was already developed to assess the shear stiffness of a soft clay. The objective of this study is to investigate the disturbance effects of the FVP due to the penetration. The laboratory tests are conducted in a large-scale consolidometer (calibration chamber). The reconstituted clay is mixed at the water content of 110% using a slurry mixer. The FVP and down-hole test are carried out every 1cm interval to compare the data. In addition, two square rods with transducers are also implemented to get the reference value. The shear waves evaluated by the FVP, dow-hole tests, and reference rods are closely matched. This study suggests that the disturbance effect of the FVP due to the penetration into the soft clay soils is small enough and the $V_s$ evaluated by the FVP reflects well the in-situ characteristics. Furthermore, the combination of the FVP and down-hole test shows the possibility of hybrid equipment.
This paper studies mechanical behavior of the superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) rods in terms of local deformations and time via tensile loading-unloading cycles for both ends fixed end constraints. Besides the unique stress induced martensitic transformation (SIMT), SMA's time dependent behavior when it is in mixed-phase condition upon loading and unloading, also need careful attention with a view of investigating the local deformation of the structural elements made of the same material. With this perspective, the so-called stress-relaxation tests have been performed to demonstrate and investigate the local strains-total strains relationships with time, particularly, during the forward SIMT. Some remarkable phenomena have been observed pertaining to SIMT, which are absent in traditional materials and those unique phenomena have been explained qualitatively. For example, at the stopped loading conditions the two ends (fixed end and moving end of the tensile testing machine) were in fixed positions. So that there was no axial overall deformation of the specimen but some notable increase in the axial local deformation was shown by the extensometer placed at the middle of the SMA specimen. It should be noted that this peculiar behavior termed as 'inertia driven SIMT' occurs only when the loading was stopped at mixed phase condition. Besides this relaxation test for the SMA specimens, the same is performed for the mild steel (MS) specimens under similar test conditions. The MS specimens, however, show no unusual increase of local strains during the stress relaxation tests.

Pressurized water reactor(PWR) fuel rods. which are continuously supported by a spring system called a spacer grid(SG), are exposed to reactor coolant at a flow velocity of up to 6-8 m/s. It is known that the vibration of 3 fuel rod is generated by the coolant flow, a so-called flow-induced-vibration(FIV), and the relative motion induced by the FIV between the fuel rod and the SG can wear away the surface of the fuel rod, which occasionally leads to its fretting failure. It is, therefore, important to understand the vibration characteristics of the fuel rod and reflect that in its design. In this paper, vibration analyses of the fuel rod with two different SGs were performed using both analytical and experimental methods. Updating of the finite element(FE) model using the measured data was performed in order to enhance confidence in the FE model of fuel rods supported by an SG. It was found that the modal parameters are very sensitive to the spring constant of the SG.
In this study, fretting wear tests of nuclear fuel rods have been performed by using two kinds of spacer grid springs with a concave and a convex shape in room temperature dry and distilled water conditions. The objectives were to examine the variation of the wear mechanism with increasing fretting cycles and to evaluate the difference of the wear debris detachment behavior at each test environment. From the test results, the wear volume of each spring condition increased with increasing fretting cycles regardless of the test environments. However, the wear rate did not show a regular tendency and apparently changed with increasing fretting cycles. This is because the formation of the wear particle layer and/or the variation of the contact condition between the fuel rod and spring surfaces could affect a critical plastic deformation for detaching the wear debris. Based on the test results, the relationship between the wear behavior of each spring shape and test environment condition, and the variation of the surface characteristics are discussed in detail.

Welding is required for a connection between two different components in the nuclear fuel of a pressurized water reactor. This work relies on a mechanical experiment and analytic results to investigate the structural integrity of nuclear fuel in a situation where some components are not welded to each other. A series of lateral vibration tests are performed in a test facility, and the test structures are examined in terms of dynamic behavior. In the tests, the displacement signal at every grid structure that sustains fuel rods is measured and processed to identify the dynamic properties. The fluid-elastic stability of the structure is also analyzed to evaluate susceptibility to a cross flow with an assumed conservative cross flow distribution. The test and analysis results confirm that the structural integrity can be maintained even in the absence of some welding connections.
Precast concrete (PC) beam-column connections using ductile rods are proposed for earthquake zone. An existing beam-column connection, two PC specimens designed by considering failure modes and a conventional RC specimen were tested under cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic performance. The specimens were designed to satisfy the requirements of current design code. The variables are the yield strength of longitudinal reinforcing bars of PC beams. The test results showed that the proposed system applying smaller yield strength of the longitudinal reinforcing bars at the PC beams than the ductile rods was satisfied with seismic criteria. The deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the proposed PC beam-column connections were greater than those of the existing DDC system.
Steel-concrete composite walls have been proposed and developed for applications in various types of structures. The double-skin profiled composite walls, as a natural development of composite flooring, provide structural and architectural merits. However, adequate intermediate fasteners between profiled steel plates and concrete core are required to fully mobilize the composite action and to improve the structural behavior of the wall. In this research, two new types of fasteners (i.e., threaded rods and vertical plates) were proposed and three specimens with different fastener types or fastener arrangements were tested under axial compression. The experimental results were evaluated in terms of failure modes, axial load versus axial displacement response, strength index, ductility index, and load-strain relationship. It was found that specimen with symmetrically arranged thread rods sustained more stable axial strain than that with staggered arranged threaded rods. Meanwhile, vertical plates are more suitable for practical use since they provide stronger confinement to profiled steel plate and effectively prevent the steel plate from early local buckling, which eventually enhance the composite action and increase the axial compressive capacity of the wall. The calculation methods were then proposed and good agreement was observed between the test results and the predicted results.
