  • The development of a parallelized aerodynamic simulation process involving moving bodies is presented. The implementation of this process is demonstrated using a fully systemized Chimera methodology for steady and unsteady problems. This methodology consist of a Chimera hole-cutting, a new cut-paste algorithm for optimal mesh. interface generation and a two-step search method for donor cell identification. It is fully automated and requires minimal user input. All procedures of the Chimera technique are parallelized on the Cray T3E using the MPI library. Two and three-dimensional examples are chosen to demonstate the effectiveness and parallel performance of this procedure.

  • This paper proposes a new solid-shape modeling system based on a lusterware-image illustration. The proposed method reconstructs a three dimensional solid shape from a set of rough sketches that are typically drawn in the early stages of the design process. The sketches do not have to be strictly accurate, and this tolerance to the roughness of the input sketches is one of the major advantages of the proposed method. The proposed system creates an initial shape based on the silhouette of the input lusterware-images. Then the user can edit the initial shape with intuitive cutting and dishing-up operations, which are based on sketching user interface. To achieve the goal, the system retains the geometric model with two representations: a point-set data and a volume data. This dual data structure allows the program to create an initial shape from the input images with little computational cost, and the user can apply cutting and dishing-up operations without substantially increasing computational and memory requirements. In this research, we have tested the proposed system by reconstructing solid models of some mechanical parts from rough sketches. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is useful for the prototyping of a solid shape.

  • This paper presents a theory related to a two-dimensional linear cross-sectional analysis, recovery relationship and a one-dimensional nonlinear beam analysis for composite wing structure with initial twist. Using VABS including a related theory, the design process of the composite rotor blade has been described. Cross-sectional analysis was performed at cutting point including all the details of geometry and material. Stiffness matrix and mass matrix were linked to each section to make 1D beam model. The 3D strain distributions within the structure were recovered based on the global behavior of the 1D beam analysis and visualize numerical results.

  • This paper proposes a three-dimensional (3D) segmentation algorithm for extracting a diagnostic object from ultrasound images by using a LoG operator In the proposed algorithm, 2D cutting planes are first obtained by the equiangular revolution of a cross sectional Plane on a reference axis for a 3D volume data. In each 2D ultrasound image. a region of interest (ROI) box that is included tightly in a diagnostic object of interest is set. Inside the ROI box, a LoG operator, where the value of $\sigma$ is adaptively selected by the distance between reference points and the variance of the 2D image, extracts edges in the 2D image. In Post processing. regions of the edge image are found out by region filling, small regions in the region filled image are removed. and the contour image of the object is obtained by morphological opening finally. a 3D volume of the diagnostic object is rendered from the set of contour images obtained by post-processing. Experimental results for a tumor and gall bladder volume data show that the proposed method yields on average two times reduction in error rate over Krivanek's method when the results obtained manually are used as a reference data.

  • The purpose of this research was to find an optimal quarrying for marble by analyzing the applicability and the work efficiency of a chain saw machine newly introduced in the underground Baekwoon mine. From the test results of the physical properties of Baekwoon marble, which affects the efficiency of rock cutting, it was found to have similar physical characteristics as the ones which are now being produced in the other areas in Korea. And especially it shows isotropic property, which can be thought to be advantageous as a dimensional stone. To check the long-term quality of the marble as a stone material, several tests such as corrosion resistance test and abrasion test were carried out. It was found to be vulnerable to acid rain with decrease of weight and seismic wave velocity after applying artificial rain at pH 5.6 for 50 times. The percentage of wear from abrasion test was 22.67%. The working time and cutting speed of the chain saw machine were recorded and analyzed during the test-run at the quarry. The overall work cycle was assorted into 9 unit operations and the operating time per each unit was drawn. The operating times for the two cutting patterns, which could be possibly applicable to the work site, were compared. The results indicated that the pattern B, that the cutting sequence was set to minimize the movement of the machine, showed 6% less working hours than the pattern A, which first cuts the outer boundary. With cutting pattern analysis, the ore body in the Baekwoon mine was 3 dimensionally modeled and a quarrying plan considering the existing conditions of the marble was suggested.

  • Two dimensional nesting is a common problem in industries such as the shipbuilding, automotive, clothing, shoe-making, and furniture industries, in which various parts are cut off from stock or packed in a flat space while minimizing waste or unoccupied space. Nesting is known as an NP-complete problem, which has a solution time proportional to the superpolynomial of the input size. It becomes practically impossible to find an optimal solution using algorithmic methods as the number of shapes to nest increases. Therefore, heuristic methods are commonly used to solve nesting problems. This paper presents an expert system that uses a heuristic search method based on an evaluation function for nesting problems, in which parts and stock are represented by pixels. The system is developed in CLIPS, an expert system shell, and is applied to four different kinds of example problems to verify its applicability in practical problems.

  • Transient aerodynamic response of an airfoil to a moving plane-flap is numerically investigated using the two-dimensional Euler equations with conservative Chimera grid method. A body moving relative to a stationary grid is treated by an overset grid bounded by a 'Dynamic Domain Dividing Line' which has an advantage for constructing a well-defined hole-cutting boundary. A conservative Chimera grid method with the dynamic domain-dividing line technique is applied and validated by solving the flowfield around a circular cylinder moving supersonic speed. The unsteady and transient characteristics of the flow solver are also examined by computations of an oscillating airfoil and a ramp pitching airfoil respectively. The transient aerodynamic behavior of an airfoil with a moving plane-flap is analyzed for various flow conditions such as deflecting rate of flap and free stream Mach number.

  • Tool interference is one of the most critical problems in sculptured surface machining. When machining cavities and concaves, the tool frequently overcuts the portions of the surface, which cause inaccuracy in machining. So tool interference-free paths must be generated for rough cutting more efficiently. In this paper a software using SSI(Surface/Surface intersection) algorithm is developed for eliminating tool interference which occurs in an offset surface in 3-dimensional free form surface modeling. this work consists of two stages : using the offset data, the intersection curves are rapidly checked by this algorithm at the first stage. CL(cutter location) data are obtained by deleting the loop section of intersected offset patches at the second stage. This algorithm can reduce the amount of memory required to store machining data and also easily check region which have the possibility of intersection. Also, This software is verified to be useful in machining a curved object on a DNC milling machine.

  • This study aimed to realize the creation of fuzzy stochastic damage to describe reliability more essentially with the analysis of harmony of damage conception, probability and fuzzy degree of membership in interval [0,1]. Two kinds of fuzzy behaviors of damage development were deduced. Fuzzy stochastic damage models were established based on the fuzzy memberships functional and equivalent normalization theory. Fuzzy stochastic damage finite element method was developed as the approach to reliability simulation. The three-dimensional fuzzy stochastic damage mechanical behaviors of Jianshan mine slope were analyzed and examined based on this approach. The comprehensive results, including the displacement, stress, damage and their stochastic characteristics, indicate consistently that the failure foci of Jianshan mine slope are the slope-cutting areas where, with the maximal failure probability 40%, the hazardous Domino effects will motivate the neighboring rock bodies' sliding activities.
