  • The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unprecedentedly changing the world since its outbreak in late 2019. Using the collected the data related to COVID-19 and the social media user data from a mobile application market research agency from January 25 to April 7, this study empirically examines the effect of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide, the number news COVID-19, and the enforcement of social distancing measures on the daily active users (DAU) of two social media services - Twitter and Facebook - in South Korea. There are three important findings from the results of econometric analysis. First, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has a negative effect on the DAU of social media. Second, the number of COVID-19 news is negatively associated with the DAU of social media. Finally, the implementation of social distancing measures has no significant effect on the DAU of the social media. Theoretical implications and managerial guidelines are also discussed.

  • Recently, social network services (SNSs) most notably in Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin have became a worldwide sensation more than the other internet services. This study suggested social conformity theory is appropriate tools for diagnosis to rapid adoption and diffusion of SNSs. Based on previous research, we suggested three different aspects of social conformity:social imitation conformity, social connection conformity, and social comparative conformity. Namely conformity has positive effect on user's three kinds of commitment which called continuance, normative, and affective commitment. we investigated user's commitment to the SNSs have positive effects on user's stickiness intention. Finally, we presented useful implications related to academy and industry.

  • Many people use social network services as to communicate, to share an information and to build social relationships between others on the Internet. Twitter is such a representative service, where millions of tweets are posted a day and a huge amount of data collection has been being accumulated. Social mining that extracts the meaningful information from the massive data has been intensively studied. Typically, Twitter easily can deliver and retweet the contents using the following-follower relationships. Topic modeling in tweet data is a good tool for issue tracking in social media. To overcome the restrictions of short contents in tweets, we introduce a notion of reply graph which is constructed as a graph structure of which nodes correspond to users and of which edges correspond to existence of reply and retweet messages between the users. The LDA topic model, which is a typical method of topic modeling, is ineffective for short textual data. This paper introduces a topic modeling method that uses reply graph to reduce the number of short documents and to improve the quality of mining results. The proposed model uses the LDA model as the topic modeling framework for tweet issue tracking. Some experimental results of the proposed method are presented for a collection of Twitter data of 7 days.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of hospital websites across four nations(e.g., South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and India). We selected English websites of 58 hospitals with JCI accreditation. For the analysis of websites, we developed assessment tool with four domains(e.g., contents, convenience, design, interactivity). The results showed that Korean hospitals provided more channels for appointment on the website compared to other countries. In contrast, foreign hospitals used actively SNS(e.g., Facebook, Twitter or Youtube) on the websites. They also provided more information on diverse services(e.g., airport pickup services, treatment costs, consultation services).

  • The purposes of this study are to understand the current status of using and adoption of social network services for public libraries in Korea and to propose how to activate social network services for the libraries in the future. For this study, the usage of the social network services by 166 public libraries was investigated. In addition, surveys to 40 library representatives from the libraries were conducted and 198 public library users answered users' survey questionnaires. As methods to activate social network services in pubic libraries, providing education and training for librarians, hiring librarians for the service, and monitoring and educating the library users for participating with diversifying promotion channels for the service were suggested.

  • This paper explores the empirically analyzes the competitive nature of the five social media by analyzing the proper SNS service such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, and Twitter. In this study, we surveyed the use and satisfaction of social media for SNS users by using the proper theory. A total of 224 users were selected for analysis. Based on the results of the questionnaire, factor analysis was carried out to extract common factors such as relationship, sociality, convenience, daily life, and entertainment. As a result of the research using proper analysis, Facebook showed the widest narrowness in sociality (.627) and convenience (.636) in the first place, and YouTube showed the lowest in daily life (.670) and entertainment (.615) In the relationship (.520), the Instagram was the widest. In terms of five factors, Facebook and YouTube have the greatest overlap in relationship (1.826) and sociality (2.696), while Pinterest and Twitter are the most common in daily life (1.937) and entertainment (2.263) There is redundancy, and for convenience (2.583), YouTube and Twitter have the most redundancy. Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have a competitive advantage over Pinterest in terms of relationships, sociality, convenience, routine, and entertainment, and are competitive across all factors except Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube Twitter It is possible to confirm that it is superior.

  • The numbers of SNS (Social Network Service) users and usage amounts are increasing every year. The influence of SNS is increasing also. SNS has a wide range of influences from daily decision-making to corporate management activities. Therefore, proper analysis of SNS can be a very meaningful work, and many studies are making a lot of effort to look into various activities and relationships in SNS. In this study, we analyze the SNS following relationships using Twitter, one of the representative SNS services. In other words, unlike the existing SNS analysis, our intention is to analyze the interests of the accounts by extracting and visualizing the accounts that two accounts follow in common. For this, a common following account was extracted using Microsoft Excel macros, and the relationship between the extracted accounts was defined using an adjacency matrix. In addition, to facilitate the analysis of the following relationships, a direction graph was used for visualization, and R programming was used for such visualization.

  • Recently, the importance of users' geographic location information has been highlighted with a rapid increase of online social network services. In this paper, by utilizing geo-tagged tweets that provides high-precision location information of users, we first identify both Twitter users' exact location and the corresponding timestamp when the tweet was sent. Then, we analyze a relationship between the tweet frequency and the average user velocity. Specifically, we introduce a tweet-frequency computing algorithm, and show analysis results by country and by city. As a main result, it is shown that the tweet frequency according to user velocity follows a power-law distribution (i.e., Zipf' distribution or a Pareto distribution). In addition, by performing a comparison between the United States and Japan, one can see that the exponent of the distribution in Japan is smaller than that in the United States.

  • Assuming that roles of traditional mass media are also shown in Twitter services, the study aims at exploring Twitter users' motives and rationales in re-tweet behavior. Based on the laddering interview method, the study gathers data on (1) message attributes (what kinds of messages do you re-tweet?); (2) consequences (what kinds of consequences are you expecting when you re-tweet?); and (3) values (what are the ultimate values in your re-tweet behavior?). The most repetitive value occurring in participants' retweet was feeling "sympathy" and "sharing" rationales. For such rationales, participants oftentimes utilize messages with "agenda" and "information" that are relative to themselves. Messages with "helping" to help others also frequently showed up in their retweet rationales. Known as liberalists' rationales, "communal consciousness", and "calling for others' action" are also shown, but not as frequent as "feeling sympathy and sharing. A total of 48 items from the analyses were used in a subsequent study as variables to identify factors (dimensions) of retweet motivation.
