  • 쌍안정 TN LCD의 스위칭 특성을 Berreman에 의해 제시된 backflow를 고려한 이론적 모델을 적용하여 해석하였다. 그리고 이 모델을 적용하여 $180^{\circ}$ 쌍안정 TN 액정셀이 쌍안정 특성을 갖기 위해서는 두 유리기판을 서로 반대 방향으로 러빙해야 하고 d/p도 중요한 요소임을 확인하였다.

  • We demonstrate the wide-viewing characteristics of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display (LCD) with self-formed micro-domains through the topographical alignment and fringe field effects of dielectric surface gratings (DSG). The mutual optical compensation between micro-domains within each pixel eliminates the contrast inversion phenomenon of TN mode without complex surface treatments.

  • In this paper, we studied the electro-optical(EO) performance of photo-aligned twisted nematic(TN)-liquid crystal display(LCD) with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet(UV) light irradiation on polyimide(Pl) surface. We observed that the voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD is almost same compared to conventional TN-LCD. Also, we observed that the voltage-holding-ratio(VHR) of photo-aligned TN-LCD is almost same compared to conventional TN-LCD.

  • To date, rubbing has been widely used to align LC molecules uniformly. Although rubbing can be simple, it has fundamental problems such as the generation of defects by dust and static electricity, and difficulty in achieving a uniform LC alignment on a large substrate. Therefore, noncontact alignment has been investigated. Ion beam induced alignment method, which provides controllability, nonstop process, and high resolution display. We investigated the high pretilt angle effects on electro-optical properties of ion beam (IB)-irradiated liquid crystal cells. on a blended polymer surface. High pretilt angle of liquid crystals IB-irradiated on a blended polymer surface including such as 5% and 10% of homeotropic polymer contents can' be achieved. The threshold voltages of IB-irradiated twisted nematic (TN) cells on a blended polymer surface decrease with increasing the pretilt angle. Also, the rising time of IB-irradiated TN cells decreases with increasing the pretilt angle. However the decay time of IB-irradiated TN cells increases with increasing the pretilt angle. Consequently, the electro-optical properties of IB-irradiated TN cells depend strongly on the pretilt angle in a blended polymer surface.

  • 디스크형 기록매질을 사용하는 홀로그래픽 메모리에서 뒤틀린 니매틱 액정 디스플레이를 사용하여 세기와 위상을 동시에 변조하는 방법을 제안한다. 세기변조에 대해서 액정 디스플레이 픽셀의 밝고 어두운 상태에 따라 2진의 off (0) 과 on (1)을 표현하기 때문에 기존의 방식과 다를 짓이 없다. 그러나 우리의 방식에서는 on의 상태에서 서로 다른 2가지의 위상지연을 만들 수 있다. 이 2 가지의 위상지연이 180도에 가까울 경우, Fourier 면 홀로그램을 기록할 때 데이터 영상의 dc 성분을 감소시켜 기록면에서의 빔 세기 분포를 향상시킬 수 있다. 제안한 방식에 대한 유용성을 실험으로 데모하였다.

  • The generation of pretilt in nematic liquid crystal(NLC)and electro-optical(EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with oblique p-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on the two kinds of the soluble polyimide (PI) surfaces containing trifluoromethyl moieties were investigated. The generated pretilt angle of NLC is about $2.5^{\circ}$ with p-polarized UV light irradiation of $20^{\circ}$ on PI-3 surface at 20 min.; However pretilt angle of about $0.5^{\circ}$ are observed on PI-1 and PI-2 surfaces. The generated pretilt angle of NLC on PI-3 surface may be attributed to the trifluoromethyl moieties attached to the lateral benzene rings. The voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD with p-polarized UV light irradiation of $20^{\circ}$ on PI-1 surfaceat at 20 min were almost same in comparison with the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD. However, the high threshold voltage and slow response are observed on PI-3 surface. Also, the decay time $\tau_d$ of photo-aligned TN-LCD is attributed to the anchoring energy of NLC.

  • We investigated the EO performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. LC alignment using UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. An good EO characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface. Therefore, the EO property of the UV-aligned TN-LCD with UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface.

  • In this paper, we obtained that the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) increases with increasing irradiation time with linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained in a cell with normally LPUV light irradiated on PI surface at 30 min. and then oblique LPUV is secondly irradiated on PI surfaces rotated by $90^{\circ}$. The pretilt angle of NLC is generated about $2.5^{\circ}$ with oblique angle of $60^{\circ}$ and then decreased with increasing the oblique angle of IN light irradiation. It is considered that the pretilt angle of NLC is attributed to the photo-depolymerization of polymer with the oblique angle of UV light. The voltage-transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with UV light irradiation time of 60 min. were almost same in comparison with rubbing treated TN-LCD.

  • We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized rayon a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer. We also discussed the electro-optical characteristic of twisted nematic (TN) LCD using ion beam irradiation on organic overcoat layer.
