  • Public policies in regard to developing reading culture programs and the contents, and in running public libraries have been used to overcome existing social issues such as regional self-centeredness and cultural lagging. It means that public libraries are playing an important role to encourage communications within local communities. The purpose of this research is therefore to analyze the concept of local community, and develop reading culture and contents to reinforce the concept. This research also targeted to analyze the required contents in reading culture. Through the case study of "G" city, the research analyzed their citizenship and sense of local community and the requests. As a result, the requited subjects were for economics, unemployment, poverty, aging, and housing order. For the subjects of environment were environment pollution and energy order. For the subjects of human rights, disabilities, and multi-cultural were requested. For the subject of education, school violence, tutoring, and truly teaching were requested. Based on the requirements, 221 items of reading lists, DVD clips, and abstracts are developed as well as 4 programs of reading culture.

  • As job mismatch intensifies in the employment market, the work based learning has emerged as a solution to this social problem. The so called Korean dual education system is expected to raise jobseekers equipped with knowledge and skills demanded by industry. This study intends to recommend an effective operational model for contracted education programs at higher institutions in order to support soft landing of Korean dual education system. Students of contracted education programs are adults graduated from vocational high schools and working for companies during weekdays. In consideration of the difficulties experienced by employee students, more flexible operation of academic affairs is required. To address these challenges, the recommended contracted education model includes such beneficial features as S-OJT courses, standard curriculum based on National Competency Standard, recognition of prior learning, flipped classroom, and tutoring system. In the last part, several directions for implementing the new contracted education model are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the current status of the Dream Start program from the perspective of social investment strategy, and as well as to suggest future directions. The program has become a major government welfare program in korea since it was introduced in 2007 as a demonstration project, following research evidence and a sound rationale about the extensive success of Head Start in the U.S. and Sure Start Programme in the UK. The aim of Dream Start is to provide integrated services for the vulnerable children, aged 0 to 12, and their families who are identified using a national administration data record of disadvantaged families with children. In order to promote the vulnerable child's well-being, to overcome inequalities, and to give every child the best start in life, Dream Start adopted a local, "whole family" approach. Case management services form an essential part of the Dream Start to customize and integrate comprehensive services such as counseling, health care, parenting advice and education, academic tutoring, and after-school activities. Although there has been a general improvement in key factors since its inception, Dream Start has not yet sufficiently shown the strong and hoped-for impact. In the meantime, Dream Start must be given financial expansion and extensive policy supports to get the chance of realizing and evaluating long-term gains for children and their families. More work need to be done to overcome inequalities and to make Dream Start service more accessible for the most disadvantaged families with children in Korea. Practical and policy suggestions for future directions of the Dream Start programs were discussed.

  • Education delivers knowledge through story. On that point Storytelling is related to education. However, the problem is raised that Storytelling in school is leaning toward teachers that's why it makes students passive story listeners. Therefore, this study developed Digital Storytelling material using in the education for elementary school students. It leads them to be able to interact actively. So, I organized applicable 12 themes for 24 times training contents in after-school tutoring program because Digital Storytelling education doesn't perform in elementary school yet. If the material is used in classes, I expect to increase learners' self-expressiveness and creativity, and besides to train the ability of adapting and taking the lead in this changing society by contributing the spread of the Digital Storytelling education. Finally, in a follow-up study, it is demanded to verify an educational effect of this material and to redesign the process of these material contents through application in studying.

  • Learning by examples has proven to be an efficient method in mastering various subjects including programming languages. This study hypothesizes that the number of examples and the type of examples are two significant dimensions that influence the performance of learning programming languages by examples. A set of experiments was conducted to investigate the impacts of the two dimensions in the domain of JAVA programming. The results showed that providing two examples is more effective than providing only one example even though significantly more explanations are attached to the single example. Among the 'two-example' groups, the group that was given functionally similar examples performed better than those with functionally dissimilar examples. Explanations for these results are provided in this paper based on the behavioral patterns of individual subjects in terms of time and frequency. This paper concludes with the implications of the study results for the development of effective tutoring systems for programming languages.

  • Web usage pattern discovery is an advanced means by using web log data, and it's also a specific application of data mining technology in Web log data mining. In education Data Mining (DM) is the application of Data Mining techniques to educational data (such as Web logs of University, e-learning, adaptive hypermedia and intelligent tutoring systems, etc.), and so, its objective is to analyze these types of data in order to resolve educational research issues. In this paper, the Web log data of a university are used as the research object of data mining. With using the database OLAP technology the Web log data are preprocessed into the data format that can be used for data mining, and the processing results are stored into the MSSQL. At the same time the basic data statistics and analysis are completed based on the processed Web log records. In addition, we introduced the Apriori Algorithm of Web usage pattern mining and its implementation process, developed the Apriori Algorithm program in Python development environment, then gave the performance of the Apriori Algorithm and realized the mining of Web user access pattern. The results have important theoretical significance for the application of the patterns in the development of teaching systems. The next research is to explore the improvement of the Apriori Algorithm in the distributed computing environment.

  • Background: For children and adolescents with cancer, going back to school is a key milestone in returning to "normal life." Purpose: To identify the support vital for a successful transition, we evaluated the parents' needs and the challenges they face when their children return to school. Methods: This multi-institutional study was conducted by the Korean Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. The written survey comprised 24 questions and was completed by 210 parents without an interviewer. Results: Most parents (165 of 206) reported that their children experienced difficulties with physical status (n=60), peer relationships (n=30), academic performance (n=27), emotional/behavioral issues (n=11), and relationships with teachers (n=4) on reentering school. Parents wanted to be kept informed about and remain involved in their children's school lives and reported good parent-teacher communication (88 of 209, 42.1%). Parents reported that 83.1% and 44.9% of teachers and peers, respectively, displayed an adequate understanding of their children's condition. Most parents (197 of 208) answered that a special program is necessary to facilitate return to school after cancer therapy that offers emotional support (n=85), facilitates social adaptation (n=61), and provides tutoring to accelerate catch up (n=56), and continued health care by hospital outreach and school personnel (n=50). Conclusion: In addition to scholastic aptitude-oriented programs, emotional and psychosocial support is necessary for a successful return to school. Pediatric oncologists should actively improve oncology practices to better integrate individualized school plans and educate peers and teachers to improve health literacy to aid them in understanding the needs of children with cancer.
