  • The for this study, turning circle tests and maneuvering indices were conducted to study and evaluate the maneuverabilities of the fishery training ship M.S. A-RA(G/T : 990tons). The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The advances of the starboard and port of the turning circle were measured based on the dumb card test method were 198m, 192m, the size of tactical diameters of them were 194m, 188m, respectively. 2. The advances at the starboard and port of the turning circles were measured according to the DGPS positioning obtained 196m, 194m, the size of tactical diameters of them were 194m, 190m, respectively. 3. The results were compared which came from the sizes of turning circle measured up with the dumb card test method during the trial test and from the size of turning circle measured according to the DGPS positioning. The advance of the turning circle measured at the time of the starboard turning according to the DGPS positioning was 1m longer than that of the trial test. And it was 21m shorter at the time of the port turning. 4. The rudder was steered at $35^{\circ}$ of rudder angle each starboard and port while the ship M.S. A-RA was advancing at full speed of 13 k't. The velocity of the ship was reduced to 7.8 k't at $180^{\circ}$ of turning angle and 6.0 k't at $360^{\circ}$ of turning angle and mean values of turning angular velocity of the port and starboard were $2.4^{\circ}$/sec and $2.3^{\circ}$/sec, respectively. 5. The Z test at each $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$ of rudder angle was carried out to have the maneuvering indices K and T measured. K for the each rudder angle were 1.24, 1.45, and 1.65 while T for the each rudder angle were 0.33, 0.20, and 0.14. That is, K at the Z test at $30^{\circ}$ was greater than at the Z test of $10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ while T at the $30^{\circ}$ Z test was less than at the Z test of $10^{\circ}$ and 20.

  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in turning with rough and finish simultaneously. The material is aluminum thin pipe. Two acoustic sensors were set on CNC machine. One was set on the finish bite and the other the rough. Two signals were first analyzed in order to consider how much the acoustic signal from the finish bite was coupled by that from the rough. A simple data collecting system to acquire signals from the finish was then determined because two acoustic signals were little coupled. Second the fundamental experiments were accomplished to study the effects of machine vibration and material state. The signal characteristics due to surface defects were studied from the collected acoustic signal data. The signal analysis was based on real time data, root mean squared average and frequency spectrum by fast fourier transform. As a result, the acoustic signals were made effects by machine condition, material structure. The acoustic signal from the finish bite was closely correlated with surface quality. Two types surface micro defects were then evaluated by the signal characteristics.

  • This paper shows that the identified and unidentified components of surface roughness in NC turning lathe which can not be analyzed in time domain such as $R_{max},\;R_a$ can be isolated in frequency domain by FFT analyzer. By interfacing FFT analyzer with stylus surface roughness instrument, surface roughness on change of working condition, especially tool feed, such as 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3(mm/rev) can be analyzed in frequency domain as follows. 1. By frequency analysis of surface roughness profile, the basic wave length of surface roughness can be obtained to isolate the identified and unidentified components of surface roughness. 2. With increase of tool feed, the unidentified components of surface roughness increase. 3. Since $R_{max}$, which can be obtained by stylus surface roughness is proportion to the output voltage of FFT analyzer, FFT analyzer also can be used to measure surface roughness in time domain such $R_a,\;R_{max}$.

  • In the beginning of the 1990's, numerous shaft bearing damages, especially in aft stern tube bearing, were reported. The main reasons of bearing damages were estimated that hull deflections have been increased by more flexible hulls and propeller dynamic loads have not been considered in shaft alignment. After that time, studies to take into account hull deflections in shaft alignment have been actively carried out, but for the latter leave much to be desired. In this study, the effects of the propeller forces on the propeller shaft bearing have been investigated by estimating thrust eccentricity as reasonable as possible although some assumptions to simulate turning of ship were introduced. Three dimensional nominal wake to estimate thrust eccentricity have been calculated by using CFD analysis and model test in the towing tank. This study presents the procedure to estimate the propeller eccentric forces and their influence on the stern tube bearing for a container carrier. As a result, it has been found that the lateral propeller forces in turning condition should be considered in shaft alignment to prevent shaft bearing damages.

  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in turning with rough and finish simultaneously. The material is aluminum thin pipe. Two acousto-ultrasonic sensors were set on the finish and the rough bite of the CNC machine. It was first evaluated that one source was affected by the other. It was found that two signals were little affected each other, and that the acoustic signal from the finish bite was more related to the surface defects. Signals from the finish bite only were then analyzed in order to observe several types of surface defects. Second the fundamental experiments were accomplished to study the effects of machine vibration and material state. The signal characteristics due to surface defects were studied from the collected acoustic signals. • A two-way left-turn lane is a continuous center left-turn lane that could be used as a deceleration and refuge area for both directions of left-turning vehicles. TWLTL's have been used effectively for access management treatment when applied to a highway that has wide-spread left turning traffic demand and a high-density of side streets. In this study, an effective analysis was carried out using a computer-based simulation tool, VISSIM, in order to evaluate performance and safety effects of TWLTLs and develop a warrant. In conclusion, the results indicated that there was a remarkable decrease of through and left-turning vehicle travel time delay on the main road and improvement of traffic safety.

  • The Maneuvering Indices of a ship are the values that decide the quantity of her motion in turning when her rudder is turned over to an angle to the starboard or the port. They consist of two kinds of indices, one of which is called index K and the other, index T. Index K decides a ship's turning ability and index T does the length of time delay of a normal turning motion after her rudder has finished the turn of an ordered angle. Generally, the values of the indices are calculated through some mathematic formulas with figures of her heading degrees recorded at a fixed time intervals during her Z test. The values of the same kind index of a ship appear differently according to the ship'sspeed, trim, rudder angle and loaded condition, etc. In this paper, the author analyzed all the amthematic formulas required to calculate the values of the indices in their forming process and examined them from the point of mathematics and dynamics and also actually figured out the values of maneuvering indices of the M.S. "HANBADA", the training ship of Korea Merchant Marine College through her Z test. The author supposed a case in which two same typed ships as the "HANBADA" in size, shape and conditions were approaching each other in meeting end on situation and each ship turned her rudder hard over to the starboard respectively when they approached to the distance of 3 times as long as the ship's length. The author worked out mathematic formulas calculating forward and transverse ship's motions within the above mentioned situation for the quantative analysis of the collision avoding action to certify whether they are in collision status or not. Applying the calculated values of the maneuvering indices of the "HANBADA" to the motion calculating formulas, the author found out the two ships were passing over each other with the clearing distance o 39m between their port quarters. With the above mentioned examinations and explanations, the author demonstrated that a ship's motion in any collision avoiding action can be shown with quantities of time and distance within reliable limit.istance within reliable limit.

  • The auto-illumination controller for office, residence, and so on was studied. The system consists of parts of a power supply, a signal oscillator, a lamp controller and two kinds of sensor. The lamp controller has two thyristors triggered by the IR sensor(SCRI) and CdS sensor(SCR2) respectively, When the illuminance around this system is higher than operating value of its sensor, lamp is turned off automatically. Otherwise, the light of lamp gets dim by CdS sensor. In case IR sensor senses the body heat of people around itself, the illuminance of the lamp gets maximum. The illuminance of the lamp can be changed dimmly by control of the variable resistor (RV) connected with SCR2 in series. The turning - on time of the lamp can be also controlled using a variable resistor(Rt) connected with a signal oscillator in parallel. Changing resistance Rt changes the time constant(.tau.), which triggers the gate of SCR2. Though people left the surrounding of lamp, the lamp keeps light for a while.

  • The control of diamond turning is usually achieved through a laser-interferometer feedback of slide position. If the tool post is rigid and the material removal process is relatively static, then such a non-collocated position feedback control scheme may surface. However, as the accuracy requirement gets tighter and desired surface contours become more complex, the need for a direct tool-tip sensing becomes inevitable. The physical constraints of the machining process prohibit any reasonable implementation of a tool-tip motion measurement. It is proposed that the measured force normal to the face of the workpiece can be filtered through an appropriate admittance transfer function to result in the estimated depth of cut. This can be compared to the desired depth of cut to generate the adjustment control action in addition to position feedback control. In this work, the design methodology on the admittance model-based control with a conventional controller is presented. The recursive least-squares algorithm with forgetting factor is proposed to identify the parameters and update the cutting process in real time. The normal cutting forces are measured to identify the cutting dynamics in the real diamond turning process using the precision dynamometer. Based on the parameter estimation of cutting dynamics and the admittance model-based nanodynamic control scheme, simulation results are shown.
