  • The prediction of maneuverability is very important in the design process of an underwater vehicle. In this study, we predicted the steady turning ability of a symmetrical underwater vehicle while considering interactions between the yaw rate and drift/rudder angle through a simulation-based methodology. First, the hydrodynamic force and moment, including coupled derivatives, were obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The feasibility of CFD results were verified by comparing static drift/rudder simulations to vertical planar motion mechanism (VPMM) tests. Turning motion simulations were then performed by solving 2-degree-of-freedom (DOF) equations with CFD data. The turning radius, drift angle, advance, and tactical diameter were calculated. The results show good agreement with sea trial data and the effects on the turning characteristics of coupled interaction terms, especially between the yaw rate and drift angle.

  • This paper presents a motion control method and its simulation results of a mobile robot for a lattice type welding. Its dynamic equation and motion control methods for welding speed and seam tracking are described. The motion control is realized in the view of keeping constant welding speed and precise target line even though the robot is driven for following straight line or curve. The mobile robot is modeled based on Lagrange equation under nonholonomic constraints and the model is represented in state space form. The motion control of the mobile robot is separated into three driving motions of straight locomotion, turning locomotion and torch slider control. For the torch slider control, the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control method is used. For the straight locomotion, a concept of decoupling method between input and output is adopted and for the turning locomotion, the turning speed is controlled according to the angular velocity value at each point of the corner with range of 90$^{\circ}$ constrained to the welding speed. The proposed control methods are proved through simulation results and these results have proved that the mobile robot has enough ability to apply the lattice type welding line.

  • The SUV has a risk of rollover because of the highness of center of mass. In this paper the roll-behavior of a SUV in turning motion is analyzed. Dynamic model of the vehicle on the slope is developed and simulation is carried out using the software ADAMS/Car. The results show that the relational expression between the ground force acting on the tire and the roll motion is well established. It is also identified that the driving state of the vehicle becomes unstable at the lower or upper position of the slope.

  • In general, the effect of roll motion is not considered in the study on maneuverability in calm water. However, for high-speed twin-screw ships such as the DTMB 5415, the coupling effects of roll and other motions should be considered. Therefore, in this study, the estimation of maneuverability using a 4-degree-of-freedom (DOF; surge, sway, roll, yaw) maneuvering mathematical group (MMG) model was conducted for the DTMB 5415, to improve the estimation accuracy of its maneuverability. Furthermore, a study on the change in turning performance according to the fin angle was conducted. To accurately calculate the lift and drag forces generated by the fins, it is necessary to consider the three-dimensional shape of the wing, submerged depth, and effect of interference with the hull. First, a maneuvering simulation model was developed based on the 4-DOF MMG mathematical model, and the lift force and moment generated by the side fins were considered as external force terms. By employing the CFD model, the lift and drag forces generated from the side fins during ship operation were calculated, and the results were adopted as the external force terms of the 4-DOF MMG mathematical model. A 35° turning simulation was conducted by altering the ship's speed and the angle of the side fins. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the MMG simulation model constructed with the lift force of the fins calculated through CFD can sufficiently estimate maneuverability. It was confirmed that the heel angle changes according to the fin angle during steady turning, and the turning performance changes accordingly. In addition, it was verified that the turning performance could be improved by increasing the heel angle in the outward turning direction using the side fin, and that the sway speed of the ship during turning can affect the turning performance. Hence, it is considered necessary to study the effect of the sway speed on the turning performance of a ship during turning.

  • This paper presents the motion planning of robotic vehicles for the path tracking and the obstacle avoidance. To follow the given path, the vehicle moves through the turning radius obtained through the pure pursuit method, which is a geometric path tracking method. In this paper, we assume that the vehicle is equipped with a 2D laser scanner, allowing it to avoid obstacles within its sensing range. The turning radius for avoiding the obstacle, which is inversely proportional to the virtual force, is then calculated. Therefore, these two kinds of the turning radius are used to generate the steering angle for the front wheel of the vehicle. And the vehicle reduces the velocity when it meets the obstacle or the large steering angle using the potentials of obstacle points and the steering angle. Thus the motion planning of the vehicle is done by planning the steering angle for the front wheels and the velocity. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is tested through simulation.

  • In this study, the turbulent free surface around KVLCC1 employed in the circular motion test simulation is numerically calculated using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, FLUENT. Also, hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments around a ship model are calculated during the steady turning. Numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with free surface around KVLCC1 have been carried out by use of RANS equation based on calculation of hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments exerted upon the ship hull. Wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. VOF method is known as one of the most effective numerical techniques handling two-fluid domains of different density simultaneously. Boundary layer thickness and wake field are changed various yaw velocities of ship model during the steady turning. The calculated hydrodynamic forces are compared with those obtained by model tests.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established standards for ship manoeuvrability and applied these standards for vessels over 100 meters in length that built since 2004 (IMO, resolution MSC.137[76]). These standards are no exception to fishing vessels. In this study we carried out a manoeuvring simulation of the new model ship (Stern trawler) of fisheries training ship of Pukyong National University based on Kijima's empirical formula. The formula takes into account of the effect of stern shape or does not take into account of the effect of stern shape. Also we checked whether the simulation results of turning motion of model ship meet IMO manoeuvrability criteria and then compared trajectories between the simulation results of model ship and the results of real sea trial test of the existing ship. In conclusion, Kijima's empirical formulas can estimate the manoeuvrability of fishing vessels at design stage approximately, it needs more parameters of fishing vessel own in case of expressing the manoeuvrability of fishing vessel accurately.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for minimal turning complete coverage Path planning for cleaning robots. This algorithm divides the whole cleaning area by cellular decomposition, and then provides the path planning among the cells employing a flow network. It also provides specific path planning inside each cell guaranteeing the minimal turning of the robots. The minimal turning of the robots is directly related to the faster motion and energy saving. The proposed algorithm is compared with previous approaches in simulation and the result shows the validity of the algorithm.
