A cylindrical capacitance-type spindle displacement sensor was designed and tested in the hard turning as a way to develop a sensor that can estimate cutting forces without using a tool dynamometer. The displacement sensor was installed between the face of spindle cover and the chucking element, and measured pure radial motion of the spindle. Ceramic inserts and tool steel workpieceof 65 Rc were used during the hard turning tests. The signals from the sensor showed the same pattern of cutting force variations as those from the tool dynamometer. The research results showed that the developed sensor could be utilized as an effective and cheap on-line sensing device to estimate cutting forces.

Micro-machine tool is essential in the micro/meso cutting for the sake of saving of space, resources, and energy. In this research, a micro-turning lathe was fabricated with piezoelectric feed drive mechanism, and motion of each axis was generated by stepwise mechanism with two piezo actuators. The resolution to drive the axis was $0.05{\mu}m$ and position accuracy less than $2{\mu}m$ was assured. From the positioning experiment, piezo feed mechanism is good enough for the micro machine tools. Many fuming experiments were carried out with diamond-cutting tools to evaluate cutting capability of a machine tool. Continuous flow type chip could be obtained even if the cutting speed was very low due to small diameter of workpiece. However, thorough investigation about machineability in micro/meso cutting is inevitable to assure high quality surface roughness in micro machine tool.
This paper presents a practical method to predict the characteristics of ship manoeuvring motions. A attempt is made to calculate the manoeuvring motions utilizing principal particulars of ship hull, properller and rudder as basic input data. The mathematical models, which describe the ship manoeuvring motions, are developed on the basis of MMG(5), Inoue(17), Hooft(18) and so on. Calcuations of manoeuvring motions for three kinds of typical characteristics, namely turning motion, zig-zag manoeuvre response and steady turning performance, are carried out. In order to examine the validity of the calculation method of this paper, simulations are run for seven merchant ships employed by Inoue(4). The computed results by present method are compared with full scale trials and Inoue's calculations(4). It can be concluded that the calculation method proposed in this paper is useful and pwoerful for prediction of characteristics of ship manoeuvring motions at the initial design phase or the application study on manoeuvring motions.
This study introduces the development of robot fish ROFI 1.1. Today, robot fish is one of strong candidates for next-generation UUV. The present paper describes the design, manufacturing, and operation tests of the robot fish developed at Seoul National University. The very first robot fish in Korea, ROFI 1.1 is operated by a wireless remote controller. Its overall length is 680mm, and weight is 8.8kg. The fore body contains main mechanical and electrical systems and is covered by a FRP skin. The aft body has a mechanical bone system that mimics fish bones, and its skin is made of flexible silicon sponge to allow elastic motion for propulsion. It is found that this mechanical system creates effective and realistic fish-like swimming mode. It is observed that the normal and maximum advancing speeds of ROFI 1.1 are about 1 and 2 m/sec, and the turning radius is between $0.7{\sim}2.5m$, depending on the turning mechanism.
Under the influence of nuclear radiation, the reliability of steam generators (SGs) is an important factor in the efficiency and safety of nuclear power plant (NPP) reactors. Motion planning that remotely manipulates an SG mobile tube-inspection robot to inspect SG heat transfer tubes is the mainstream trend of NPP robot development. To achieve motion planning, conditional traversal is usually used for base position optimization, and then the A* algorithm is used for path planning. However, the proposed approach requires considerable processing time and has a single expansion during path planning and plan paths with many turns, which decreases the working speed of the robot. Therefore, to reduce the calculation time and improve the efficiency of motion planning, modifications such as the matrix method, improved parent node, turning cost, and improved expanded node were proposed in this study. We also present a comprehensive evaluation index to evaluate the performance of the improved algorithm. We validated the efficiency of the proposed method by planning on a tube sheet with square-type tube arrays and experimenting with Model SG.

ISO 14649 (data model for STEP-NC) is a new interface scheme or language for CAD-CAM-CNC chain under established by ISO TC184 SCI. Up to this point, the new language is mainly made for milling and turning, and other processes such as EDM will be completed in the future. Upon completion, it will be used as the international standard language for e-manufacturing paradigm by replacing the old machine-level language, so called M&G code used since 1950's. With the rich information contents included in the new language, various intelligent functions can be made by the CNC as the CNC knows what-to-make and how-to-make. In particular, On-Machine Inspection required for quality assurance in the machine level, can be done based on the information of featurebased tolerance graph. Previously, On-Machine inspection has been investigated mainly for milling operation, and only a few researches were made for turning operation without addressing the data model. In this thesis, we present a feature-based on-machine inspection process by the 4 Tasks: 1) proposing a new schema for STEP-NC data model, 2) converting the conventional tolerance scheme into that of STEP-NC, 3) modifying the tolerance graph such that the tolerance can be effectively measured by the touch probe on the machine, and 4) generating collision-free tool path for actual measurement. Task 1 is required for the incorporation of the presented method in the ISO 14649, whose current version does not much include the detailed schema for tolerance. Based on the presented schema, the tolerance represented in the conventional drafting can be changed to that of STEP-NC (Task 2). A special emphasis was given to Task 3 to make the represented tolerance accurately measurable by the touch probe on the machine even if the part setup is changed. Finally, Task 4 is converting the result of Task into the motion of touch probe. The developed schema and algorithms were illustrated by several examples including that of ISO 14649 Part 12.

Recent accidents of crude oil tankers have resulted in sinking, grounding of vessels and significant levels of marine pollution. Therefore, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been strengthening the regulations of ship maneuvering performance in MSC 137. The evaluation of maneuvering performance can be made at the early design stage; it can be investigated numerically or experimentally. The main objective of this paper was to investigate the maneuvering performance of a VLCC due to the increase of rudder force at an early design stage for low speed in shallow water conditions. It was simulated in various operating condition such as deep sea, shallow water, design speed and low speed by using the numerical maneuvering simulation model, developed using MMG maneuvering motion equation and KVLCC 2 (SIMMAN 2008 workshop). The effect of increasing the rudder force can be evaluated by using numerical simulation of turning test and ZIG-ZAG test. The research showed that, increasing the rudder force of a VLCC was more effective on improving the turning ability than improving the course changing ability especially. The improvement of turning ability by the rudder force increasing is most effective when the ship is sailing in shallow water at low forward speed.
The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.

The control of diamond turning is usually achieved through a laser-interferometer feedback of slide position. The limitation of this control scheme is that the feedback signal does not account for additional dynamics of the tool post and the material removal process. If the tool post is rigid and the material removal process is relatively static, then such a non-collocated position feedback control scheme may surfice. However, as the accuracy requirement gets tighter and desired surface cnotours become more complex, the need for a direct tool-tip sensing becomes inevitable. The physical constraints of the machining process prohibit any reasonable implementation of a tool-tip motion measurement. It is proposed that the measured force normal to the face of the workpiece can be filtered through an appropriate admittance transfer function to result in the estimated dapth of cut. This can be compared to the desired depth of cut to generate the adjustment control action in additn to position feedback control. In this work, the design methodology on the admittance model-based control with a conventional controller is presented. The recursive least-squares algorithm with forgetting factor is proposed to identify the parameters and update the cutting process in real time. The normal cutting forces are measured to identify the cutting dynamics in the real diamond turning process using the precision dynamoneter. Based on the parameter estimation of cutting dynamics and the admitance model-based nanodynamic control scheme, simulation results are shown.
