  • U-turn and P-turn as well as left-turn restriction exist in real traffic network. the optimal route should be selected for considering these using shortest path algorithms. But, the traditional algorithms have some limitations to use for considering there. The objective of this paper is to modify Dijkstra algorithm in order to find the optimal path in real traffic network. The continuous three nodes are used to check turn-restrictions and exclude these from and optimal path. A virtual connection is used to consider U-turn and P-turn.

  • Pole arcs, turn-on angle, and turn-off angle are major design factors, which affects Switched Reluctance Motor's torque performance. If these design factors are considered independently, the enhancement of SRM performance is restricted. Therefore, we need to consider pole arcs, turn-on angle and turn-off angle at the same time, when we design SR. In this paper, we analyze how these factors affect to torque ripple and average torque by using dynamic Finite Element Method(FEM) with derive circuit and present the good design results according to the various speeds. Especially, we formulate turn-on and turn-off angle from a voltage equation and present effective design range.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to establish the traffic volume-based warrants of right-turn lanes at unsignalized intersections and to introduce a risk probability methodology based on the warrants. METHODS : In this study, a risk probability of a potential rear-end collision is applied between a right-turn vehicle and the immediately following through vehicle. Using the shifted negative exponential model and the compound probability theorem, the risk probability can be expressed as the function of directional volumes and the percentage of right-turns for a two-lane and four-lane highway, respectively. RESULTS : Based on the risk probablity, guidelines for installing right-turn lanes on two-lane and four-lane highways were developed. The risk probability also showed rationality by comparing with right-turn same-direction conflicts observed in-situ. CONCLUSIONS : The results of our study define the total approaching volumes to encourage a right-turn lane as a function of operating speed, percentage of right-turn, and number of lanes.

  • Currently, the minimum breadth as a point available for U-turn setup is designated as "over 9m for one way" in the traffic safety facilities practical manuals, and vehicles allowed to make a U-turn are limited to passenger cars. However, as passenger cars have recently become larger and SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) are being popularized, they fail to make a U-turn in one attempt. This causes a traffic jam and a problem with traffic safety. This study proposed, compared, and tested the measured values of actual differences in the turning radius of U-turn by actual cars with estimated values by using PC-Crash, a car accident simulation program. Then, the study forecasted the turning radius of U-turns of Korean passenger cars by using PC-Crash, and proposed appropriate breadth for U-turn setup.

  • This paper proposes a new gate drive circuit for high power IGBTs which can reduce the harmful effect of reverse recovery current at turn-on and actively suppress the overvoltage across the driven IGBT at turn-off without a snubber circuit. The turn-on scheme decreases the rising rate of the collector current by inereasing the input capacitance at turn-on transient when the gate-emitter voltage goes above threshold voltage. It results in soft transient of the reverse recovery current with no variation in turn-on delay time. The turn-off driving scheme has adaptive feature to the amplitude of collector current, so that the overvoltage can be limited much effectively at the fault collector current. Experimental results under various normal and fault conditions prove the effectiveness of the proposed circuit.

  • This study was undertaken to develop a traffic signal timing method for interconnected and semi-protected-left-turn intersections(the intersections which have left-turn signal but not exclusive left-turn lanes) on four-lane streets for energy saving and to computerize the method for the practical use. For this study, a probability model which could estimate the utilized time of the shared left-turn lane by through traffic during green period was developed based on field studies. The two left-turn treatments, leading and lagging left-turns, were tested for the intersections, and it can be concluded that the leading left-turn was more efficient for the normal urban streets on which through traffic is major traffic. Adopting the leading left-turn macro-models to estimate vehicular average delay and proportions of vehicles stopped at the intersections were developed. Using the two models as well as the idling fuel consumpution rate and the excess fuel consumption per stop-go speed change, a traffic signal timing method for the intersections for energy saving was developed and computerized. The method can be used for more than four-lane streets and for other measures of effectiveness such as minimum delay, minimum stop rates, etc.

  • This paper deals with on the efficiency questions of the left-turn prohibit at an isolated intersection and a corridor with 5-phase signal system. Its objectives are three-fold ; (1) to analyze the efficiency of the left-turn prohibit with the use of an imaginary network, (2) to evaluate various factors under consideration in decision making on the left-turn prohibit, (3) to provide a framework for estimating and evaluating overall impacts of the left-turn prohibit in traffic network. the major findings using an imaginary network and computer packages such as MINUTP, TRANSYT-7F and STATGRAPH are followings. First, left-turn prohibit reduces cycle length by 33 seconds and delay time per vehicle by 36 seconds at an isolated intersection, and cycle length by 31 seconds and delay time per veicle by 43 seconds along a corridor. Second, total vehicle mile of travel and total travel time at an isolated intersection seem up to increase 38.85 miles(57.36km), 14.4 hour on the average, Regarding to a corridor, total vehicle mile of travel is increased by 50.14 miles(80.22km), but total travel time is decreased by129.9 hours. Third, the efficiency of left-turn prohibit are affected the following eight factors including left-turn volume(veh/hr) and ratio(%), average delay time per vehicle(sec/veh) and others. Finally, several simple and multiple regression models to evaluate the impacts on the left-turn prohibit are formulated from the above eight factors. It can be expected that these models will take an important role in decision-making of left-turn prohibit.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of long turn mechanism by describing long turns after kinematic analysis and provide skiers and winter sports instructors with data through which they are able to analyze right postures for turns in skiing in a systematic, rational and scientific manner. Method: For this, a mean difference of kinematic variables (the center of gravity (CG) displacement of distance, trajectory, velocity, angle) was verified against a total of 12 skiers (skilled and unskilled, 6 persons each), regarding motions from the up-start to down-end points for long turns. Results: First, concerning the horizontal displacement of CG during a turn in skiing, skilled skiers were positioned on the right side at the upstart and edge-change points at a long turn. There was no difference in anteroposterior and vertical displacements. Second, in terms of CG-trajectory differences, skilled skiers revealed a significant difference during a long turn. Third, regarding skiing velocity, skilled skiers were fast at the edge-change and maximum inclination points in long turns. Fourth, there was no difference in a hip joint in terms of a lower limb joint angle. In a knee joint, a large angle was found at the up-start point among skilled skiers when they made a long turn. Conclusion: In overall, when skilled and unskilled skiers were compared, to make a good turn, it is required to turn according to the radius of turn by reducing weight, concerning the CG displacement. Regarding the CG-trajectory differences, the edge angle should be adjusted via proper inclination angulation. In addition, a skier should be more leaned toward the inside of a turn when they make a long turn. In terms of skiing velocity, it is needed to reduce friction on snow through the edging and pivoting of the radius or turn according to curvature and controlling ski pressure. Regarding a lower limb joint angle, it is important to make an up move by increasing ankle and knee angles instead of keeping the upper body straight during an up motion.

  • RM(Switched Reluctance Motor)'s Torque is generated by phase-current and inductance profile. A new analytical concept is proposed to determine the turn-off angle for maximization of the torque output. This paper describes a new method to maximization the average torque of a current control Switched Reluctance Motor. It is based on the simplified turn-off angle equation using least square method. Simulations carried out on a three-phase 6/4 pole SRM justify the algorithm is described. The suggested maximization average torque is verified by simulation in this paper.
