  • This paper deals with the edge effect in thin insulating films, focusing on their dependence on film thickness. The finding is that the electric field is lowered at the edge as the film thickness is reduced, which, in turn, is closely related to dielectric breakdown voltage. In order to analyze this phenomenon, a simple capacitor model is introduced with which dependence of dielectric breakdown voltage around the electrode edge on the film thickness is explained. Due to analytical difficulty to get the expression of electrical field strength at the edge, an equivalent circuit approach is used to find the voltage expression first and then the electric field expression using it. The relation gets to an agreement with the experimental findings shown in the paper. This outcome may be extended to solve similar problems in multi-layer insulating films.

  • Herein, macroporous carbon foams were successfully prepared with phenol and formaldehyde as carbon precursors and an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ($BMIPF_6$), as a pore generator by employing a polymerization-induced phase separation method. During the polycondensation reaction of phenol and formaldehyde, $BMIPF_6$ forms a clustered structure which in turn yields macropores upon carbonization. The morphology, pore structure, electrical conductivity of carbon foams were investigated in terms of the amount of the ionic liquid. The as-prepared macroporous carbon foams had around 100-150 ${\mu}m$-sized pores. More importantly, the electrical conductivity of the carbon foams was linearly improved by the addition of $BMIPF_6$. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first result reporting the possibility of the use of an ionic liquid to prepare porous carbon materials.

  • Disruptive innovations have brought convenience and affordability in a variety of industries. The innovations that will eventually turn it around are ready. However, health care remains expensive and unsustainable to many because of the lack of innovations. Health care may be the most entrenched, change-averse industry in the united states. The aim of this article is to describes the innovations of Cleveland Clinic. The author present innovation activities in Cleveland Clinic, followed by a discussion of some of the reasons how disruptive innovations in Cleveland Clinic has been achieved.

  • We report the photo (PL) and electro luminescence (EL) properties of new conjugated compounds based on imidazole moiety, 4,4' -di(4,5 diphenyl-N-imidazolyl)stilbene(DDPIS) and 4,4'-di(2,4,5-triphenyl-N-imidazolyl)stilbene(DTPIS), as emitting materials. ITO/m-MTDATA/NPB/DDPIS/Alq3/LiF/AI device shows blue EL spectrum at 456 ㎚ and 0.3 cd/ A and turn on voltage at 7 ∼ 8 V. DTPIS shows blue EL spectrum at around λmax=453㎚ and 0.5 cd/A efficiency in ITO/m-MTDATA/NPB/DTPIS/Alq3/LiF/Al device.

  • We have developed an optimization algorithm based formulation for performing efficient time driven simultaneous place and route for FPGAs. Field programmable gate array(FPGAs) provide of drastically reducing the turn-around time for digital ICs, with a relatively small degradation in performance. For a variety of application specific integrated circuit application, where time-to-market is most critical and the performance requirement do not mandate a custom or semicustom approach, FPGAs are an increasingly popular alternative. This has prompted a substantial amount of specialized synthesis and layout research focused on maximizing density, minimizing delay, and minimizing design time.

  • In this paper, a high speed rotating arc sensor for automatic fillet welding is introduced. In order to track the welding seam, The high speed rotating arc sensor is used. The welding tip of a high speed rotating arc sensor rotates about 3000 rpm using DC motor. The rotating torch is driven by gear between welding torch body and wire guide. The welding current is measured by using the current sensor and rot at ing position sensor. To realize the welding seam tracking algorithm with accuracy, a software filter algorithm using the moving average method is applied to the measured welding current in the microprocessor. The welding mobile robot with two wheels and two sliders is developed for fillet welding. The welding mobile robot can control its traveling direction and turn itself around the corner. The effectiveness is proven through the experimental results conducted with varied fillet tracking patterns.

  • National projects on renewable energy and new energy are driven more actively than ever in many countries for the exhaustion of fossil fuel energy from the turn of the century. Such activities began to spread out in railway industry with centering around west European countries. Electric energy is generated on the hybrid vehicle itself, which contributes to reduction of the cost for construction of the infrastructure required for the supply of electric power. Hybrid tram is mainly composed of propulsion system to control electric energy, automatic guidance system to control steering and operation, and central vehicle unit to control and monitor major electronic devices. Generation and supply of electric power are made by the combination of engine generator and battery, or fuel cell and super capacitor.

  • The unsteady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional large-eddy simulation(LES) was carried out to evaluate the vorticity distribution of a small-size axial fan(SSAF). The X-component vorticity profiles developed around blade tips turn from axial to radial, and diminish the density of distribution according to the increase of static pressure. Otherwise, the Z-component vorticity profiles evenly develop at the region larger than the half radial distance of blade at the operating points of A and B, partly at the trailing-edge region of blade and radially over bellmouth according to the increase of static pressure.

  • This paper reports an example of flow-induced vibration in a very large plant and the whole procedure of reducing the vibration. During the operation of flue gas desurfurization unit of the thermal power plant, serious vibration occurred at all around the unit. The worst vibration was recorded on the heat exchanger surface, which weighed 180 tones, as 17.8 m/$s^2$ in vibration amplitude at 34Hz. To identify the vibration, frequency analysis on the response vibration, the expected excitation force and the system resonance was executed. This investigation revealed that the cause of the vibration was vortex shedding from the circular pipes in the heat exchanger. Vortices from the pipes excited acoustic resonance in the heat exchanger room, which, in turn, made the structure vibrate. Through inserting the baffles between the pipes, which had an effect of cutting the acoustic wave at resonance frequency, the vibration was eliminated dramatically.
