Late Fall Nitrogen Application and Turf Cover for Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica) Spring Green-up

  • The use of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) in the transition zone is limited because of a lack of cold hardiness although zoysiagrass has many advantages compared to other warm-season and cool-season grasses. Late-fall N fertilization is often applied for darker green color of turfgrass in early spring and more extensive root growth without rapid top growth. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of late fall N application and turf cover for zoysiagrass spring green-up. Clear polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film was used for turf cover. The amount of N applied were 5 and $10g\;N\;m^{-2}$ for the low and high N rate treatments, respectively. Covered zoysiagrass had greater turfgrass color and quality in early spring than non-covered zoysiagrass. The high N rate had 0.6 to 2.3 greater turfgrass quality than the low N rate on 7 of 9 rating dates. Slow-release N as late fall fertilization is more effective for turfgrass color and quality than fast-release N in spring. Turf cover could reduce the period of yellow zoysiagrass, and the earlier time of spring green-up could be advanced by increasing turfgrass quality and growth of zoysiagrass.

  • This study was carried out to search for growth and quality -of turfgrass by Nitrogen source (Urea Ammonium sulphate) and organic matter, and to obtain methods of pr6per turfgrass management by the results. This experiment was conducted in turf field from 1988 to 1989. The results of this experiment was summarized as follows; 1.Without application of organic matter, turfgrass growth between urea and ammonium sulphate was not significant, however ammonium sulphate resulted in superior to urea in total dry weight when organic matter was applied. 2.The addition of organic matter showed significant effect on color rating and visible quality, and ammonium sulphate was higher quality than urea. 3.Shoot density increased, particularly in ammonium sulphate treatment, when organic matter was applied. 4.Rhizome and stolon were shown significant effect in urea treatment by the application of organic matter. 5.Surface soil pH was allowed to become slightly acid by the ammonium sulphate treatments, but soil acidity remained mostly unaffected when organic matter was supplied. 6.Total nitrogen of log tissue and organic matter content increased when organic matter w-as applied.

우리나라 골프 코스에서 한지형 잔디의 활용방안 (A Study on the Utilizing of Cool-season Turfgrass of Golf Courses in Korea)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the utilizing of cool-season turfgrass in areas, excluding greens, of Korean golf courses. Data collected from 120 golf courses were subjected to frequency and T-test analysis using SPSSWIN. The results obtained were as follows: 1) seventy eight golf curses were utilizing cool-season turfgrass in areas except of the greens. At thirty five golf courses (46.0%) of them, the area utilized appeared tee, green collar, green approach etc. (tee>green collar>green approach). At 37 golf courses(48.7%), a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass was utilized and the ratio of the mix was 70:30(v/v). At 57 golf courses(76.0%), seed sowing was utilized. 2) In Korean golf courses, the cognition of utilizing cool-season turfgrass depended on the existence of the practice. The cognition of the experienced was more´ affirmative´ than that of the inexperienced. 3) In the experienced, the preference was determined by turfgrass quality and good appearance and recuperative rate of cool-season turfgrass. In the inexperienced, the preference was determined by turfgrass quality god appearance. 4) The experienced recommended the mix of Kentucky bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass. 5) It seems that the golf courses having used cool-season turfgrass have difficulties in the maintenance in summer while the golf courses without using cool-season turfgrass have difficulties in the maintenance in summer and the selection of turfgrass variety.

복합잔디의 구성을 위한 초종 선택 (Species Selection for Composite Turfgrass)

  • 인조잔디는 천연잔디의 단점을 보완하고자 개발이 되어 이용이 되어왔다. 그러나 여러가지 단점이 나타남으로 복합잔디는 천연잔디와 인조잔디의 단점을 보완하기 위해서 개발이 되었으며 최근에 그 이용도가 증가 하고 있다. 그러나 우리나라에서는 복합잔디에 관한 연구가 많이 이루어 지지 않았고 이에 따라 국내에서의 복합잔디의 활용도를 위해 많은 연구를 거쳐 검증이 요구 되는 시점에 있다. 이에 본 실험은 인조잔디와 천연잔디의 장점을 극대화 할 수 있는 복합잔디를 위한 천연잔디의 초종을 선택하기 위해 수행되었다. 본 실험을 위해 인조잔디가 2006년 10월 14일 경남 합천군 합천읍 서산리에 위치한 주식회사 한울의 농장에 식재 되었다. 코오롱에서 제조한 광엽형(엽폭 12 mm)과 세엽형(엽폭 2-3 mm)의 인조잔디로 사용 되었으며 천연잔디는 Kentucky bluegrass, Tall fescue, 그리고 Kentucky bluegrass와 Perennial ryegrass의 Mixture 등이 사용되었다. Kentucky bluegrass가 turfgrass quality에서는 Tall fescue와 KP Mixture를 비교했을 때 차이를 보이지 않았으나 지면피복률에서는 더 좋은 결과를 보여 주었다. 지표면 온도가 상승함에도 Kentucky bluegrass는 인조잔디와 혼합하여 사용되었을 때 Turfgrass quality와 지면피복률 모두 만족할 만한 결과를 보여 주었다.

  • 골프장 잔디 관리에서 미생물제제는 잔디의 생육 및 품질을 개선하고, 병을 예방하기 위해 사용되어왔다. 본 연구는 유산균(Lactobacillus fermentum)을 함유하는 미생물제제의 처리에 따른 크리핑 벤트그래스의 생육과 품질에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 처리구는 무처리구(NF), 대조구(CF), 미생물제제 처리구(MFcL: microbial fertilizer containing L. fermentum; MFL: CF+MFcL $1.0g\;m^{-2}$; 2MFL: CF+ MFcL $2.0g\;m^{-2}$) 및 미생물제제 단독 처리구(OMF; MFcL $1.0g\;m^2$)로 설정하였다. 시험 종료 후 토양 화학성은 처리구별 차이를 나타내지 않아 MFcL의 처리가 토양 이화학성에 미치는 영향은 미미하였다. MFcL 처리 시 잔디의 시각적 품질, 잔디 예지물, 잔디 중 무기 성분 함량 및 흡수량은 대조구와 비슷하였다. 잔디 밀도는 MFcL처리구에서 대조구에 비해 약 20% 정도 증가하였다. 이들 결과는 유산균을 함유하는 미생물제제의 처리는 크리핑 벤트그래스의 밀도를 향상에 기여하는 것을 확인하였다.

Kentucky bluegrass의 생육을 위한 생초복합비료 효과 (Effects of Liquid Fertilizer Produced from Fermented Clippings for Kentucky bluegrass)

  • 유기질비료(Organic fertilizer)는 천연유기질(Natural organic) 비료와 합성유기질(Synthetic organic) 비료로 구분이 된다. 천연유기질비료의 장점은 그동안의 선행연구를 통해서 많이 보고되어왔다. 그러나 예지물을 이용한 시비효과에 대한 연구결과는 제한적이다. 본 연구는 예지물을 발효시켜 제조된 천연유기질비료로서의 골프장의 fairway 및 athletic fields 에서 많이 사용되고 있는 Kentucky bluegrass 생육에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해서 수행하였다. 생초복합비료는 Kentucky bluegrass 로부터 수거된 예지물을 모아 부숙과정 없이 미립자로 분쇄한 후 $28^{\circ}C$에서 약 2개월간 발효시킨 후 생성된 발효액에 유용미생물(Effective Microorganism, EM) 군으로 제조된 활성액을 3% 혼합하여 제조하였다. 잔디에 대한 각 질소의 시비효과는 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP)에서 제시한 방법에 준하여 잔디의 품질을 시각적평가를 통해 매 2주마다 조사하였다(1=worst, 9=best, and 6=acceptable). 생초복합비료와 천연유기질비료와의 비교에서는 품질의 변화폭이 일정하고 최소수용품질 이상의 품질을 나타내기에 생초복합비료가 그 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 속효성비료인 urea 와의 비교에서 그 차이가 더 크게 나타났다. 그러나 생초복합비료의 시비 빈도간에 따른 차이는 본 실험에서 나타나지 않았다.

들잔디 위의 한지형 잔디 덧파종 효과 (Effects of Cool-Season Turfgrass Overseeding onto Zoysiagrass)

  • This study was carried out to find out the effect of cool-season turfgrass overseeding onto zoysiagrass(Zoysia japonica L.) for extending green color and solving traffic problem during dormant periods. Overseeding rates of cool-season turfgrasses were $10g/m^2$ of Kentucky bluegrass(KB1), $20g/m^2$of Kentucky b1uegrass(KB2), $60g/m^2$ of perennial ryegrass(PR), $80g/m^2$ of Tall fescue(TF), and $10g/m^2$ of Kentucky bluegrass + $10g/m^2$ of perennial ryegrass mixture(KB+PR) onto 2m${\times}$2m(width${\times}$length) zoysiagrass plots with 3 replications.1 to 9-sca1e of visual quality and visual color were measured after treatment, Consequently cool-season turfgrass overseeding gave a good performances of extending the green periods and enhancing the turf grass quality. KB1 and KB2 were found to be excellent performances for visual quality and visual color compared to PR, TF, KB+PR and control. KB2 showed better turf performances than KB1 within Kentucky bluegrass overseedings. Turfgrass color was kept up for 10 months by overseeding of cool-season turfgrasses(KB1, KB2, PR, TP, KB+PR) compared to about 5~6 months by zoysiagrass(Control). The visual quality and visual color of PR and TF showed good performances during a green-up period of spring, but decreasing tendencies through the summer.Percent diseases data revealed also higher ratings for PR and TF compared to for KB1 and KB2.

Coal Bottom Ash Application on Park Site Soil and Its Impacts on Turfgrass Growth and Soil Quality

  • Bottom ash (BA) has different macro- and micronutrients such as B, Mo, Fe, Ca, and Mg, providing useful resources for plant growth and soil quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of artificial top-soil treated with BA in park area as a vegetation base material, especially for turfgrass growth. Collected BA was mixed with peat moss and clay at the ratio of 70:10:20 (w/w). In order to evaluate the park quality and turfgrass growth in park area, the artificial soil was applied with BA along with the control or without BA. Result showed that exchangeable K and P were increased by $11.4mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $163mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively, compared to the control soil when the artificial soil was treated with BA. Microbial population and enzyme activity (Acid-phosphatase, APA) in artificial soil having BA also increased as 2 times and 10%, respectively, compared to the control soil. Comparing turfgrass growth and yield between general soil and artificial soil, about 2 times higher plant yield (fresh weight) was observed as artificial soil was applied comparing to general soil. Furthermore, nutrient concentration in turfgrass was averaged as 0.440% for $P_2O_5$, 0.456% for CaO, 1.198% for $K_2O$ and 0.188% for MgO that all values are higher than general soil (0.323% for $P_2O_5$, 0.416% for CaO, 0.610% for $K_2O$ and 0.173% for MgO). Application of BA can be useful for vegetation base material in park site.
