The laboratory and green house studies evaluated the effect of three different environmental factors on the seed germination, seedling emergence and survival of four major weed species in coconut plantations, Mimosa pudica, Ureana lobata, Panicum maximum and Pennisetum polystachyon. Germination percentage of all the weed species was significantly reduced with increasing soil moisture stress, no germination was observed at -0.9 MPa. Germination of both grass seeds ranged from 8% to 25% and 10% to 45% as moisture stress decreased from -0.4 MPa to 0 MPa, respectively. In contrast, seeds of M. pudica, and U. lobata were moderately tolerant to soil moisture stress and best adapted to moist environment. All the weed species seeds germinated over a wide range of soil pH values with the highest germination occurring at pH 6. In all the species, seedling emergence was declined rapidly with increasing depth with the exception of U. lobata. Seedling emergence significantly declined when the duration of flooding was three days or longer in dicotyledonous weed species and two days or longer in monocotyledonous weeds. This study illustrates the adaptability of these weeds to different environmental conditions which would enable the development of management strategies to reduce their populations below economic threshold levels in coconut plantations.

Studies were carried out to provide basic information for establishing the weed control in Chungbuk, Korea. The present surveys targeting 260 farmers in Chungbuk province were conducted for the cultivation system, weeds occurrence and usage of herbicides. To estimate the occurring area of herbicide resistant weeds, soil samples from 400 paddy fields were collected twice on August, 2011 and April, 2012. In the results of survey, the 99.6% of farmers used the rice planting machine and the 78% of the farmers disseminated herbicides twice to control weeds before and after planting rice. The most commonly used herbicide were as follows; soil-applied herbicide : butachlor 46.6%, mid-term herbicide : mefenacet + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 10.7%, foliar herbicides : bentazone 62%. The dominant paddy field weeds included Echinochloa crusgalli (16.2%), Scirpus juncoides (12.2%), Monochoria vaginalis (11.9%) and Sagittaria trifolia (9.5%). Occurrence area of sulfonylurea herbicide resistant weeds was 13,659 ha in 26.8% of the paddy area. Monochoria vaginalis showed the highest with 4,605 ha (36.4%) followed Scirpus juncoides (30.7%), and Lindernia dubia (10.6%) at 2011. Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides occurred were evenly distributed and the most problematic weed in Chungbuk, Korea.
This study was performed to study characteristics of new zoysiagarass cultivar 'Green Ever' (Plant Variety Protection Application no. 2014 - 02). 'Green Ever' was developed by selection breeding among 100 native zoysiagrasses collected in South Korea. 'Green Ever' showed specific bands (1.48 kb with OPC14 and 1.05 kb with OPD5) which were distinct from 'Anyang Joonggi' or 'Dongrae Koryogi' in RAPD analysis. 'Green Ever' was classified as Z. matrella in morphological evaluations including plant height ($6.8{\pm}0.5cm$), leaf width ($2.0{\pm}0.1mm$), height of lowest leaf ($1.9{\pm}0.1cm$) and seed length ($3.0{\pm}0.1mm$), which was similar with morphological characteristics of 'Dongrae Koryogi'. Turf quality, shoot density and chlorophyll content of 'Green Ever' were higher than them of 'Anyang Joonggi' and 'Dongrae Koryogi' under intensive management such as fairway on golf course, especially shoot densities of 'Green Ever' were excellent higher than 'Anyang Joonggi' and 'Dongrae Koryogi' during experimental periods. It could be extensively used in fairway, teeing ground of golf courses and landscape garden after further study about various environmental adaptabilities such as winter kill, wear tolerance etc.
Purple ammannia (Ammannia coccinea Rottb.) is an exotic weed originated from North America. It was known to be a noxious weed in a rice paddy field for the competition with rice. We investigated its distribution and habitat types in Korea to obtain basic data for the management plan of this species. Although purple ammannia is currently not a dominant species in natural habitats, its nationwide distribution was found in our study. We categorized the types of its habitats as margins of rice paddies, abandoned paddy fields, riverine wetlands and reservoirs. Particularly, purple ammannia plants were frequently located along banks of irrigation channels that ran through rice paddies and surrounding wetlands. Because they mainly occurred along the direction of water flow, we considered that the plants have spread along water courses. A total of 69 vascular plant taxa was identified at the habitats of purple ammannia. The largest group of life form among purple ammannia population was therophytes, which indicates that purple ammannia mostly grow in the disturbed habitats.
Survey was initiated on insect pest species damaging the landscaping trees in golf courses to get the basic information for the development of insect management program. Four country clubs were selected as survey sites; Tongue Country Club and Youngwon Country Club in Gyeongnam, Daegu Country Club in Gyeongbuk, and Dongrae Benest Golf Club in Busan. We found that 60 species of 44 genera in 34 families of six orders from 88 species of 54 genera in 33 families of 22 orders surveyed. Most landscaping trees were damaged by one or two species of insect pests, but tree species such as Robinia pseudoacacia, Prunus leveilleana var. pendula, Castanea crenata, Quercus dentata, and Q. variabilis were damaged by more than five species of insects. Most insect species damaged one or two tree species. However, Adoretus tenuimaculatus(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) damaged 67 tree species of 41 genera. The Coleoptera and Honmoptera species were 36.4% and 36.3% of the total insect species, respectively. Insect pest occurring in high frequency was 9% of total insect species, while infrequent one was 73%. The insect species with chewing and sucking mouth part types were 49% and 51%, respectively.

Since sulfonylurea (SU) herbicide-resistant Monochoria korsakowii in Seosan reclaimed land in 1998 was reported first, herbicide-resistant weed species and their area of occurrence have been steadily increasing. In recent years, Sagittaria trifolia resistant to SU herbicides has been reported in Gimhae, Gyeongnam province. While collecting S. trifolia for constructing barcode database of major weeds we were suspicious by the continuous variation in the leave morphology of the species. In order to identify the S. trifolia from S. aginash we barcoded the species collected from domestic using ITS and compared the sequence variation with the ITS sequences of S. aginash downloaded from NCBI. As a result, it was found that the plants collected from the domestic did not have any variation among individuals although they showed wide morphological variation. On the other hand, interspecific variation between S. trifolia and S. aginash was 4.6%. Plants that are difficult to identify using morphological characters can be identified quickly and accurately using the barcode technique. Herbicide-resistant weeds may require different management practices depending on the species even in the same genus. Domestic herbicide-resistant weeds are steadily increasing. Therefore, accurate identification of these species must be preceded for effective weed control.
This paper provides the current status of weed science and prospects for the development of weed science based on the research trends presented at the 26th Asian Pacific Weed Science Conference in 2017. Approximately 458 researchers from 25 countries, including Korea, participated in the conference and presented 325 papers in 20 research areas. Major research topics were herbicide resistance, herbicide use, herbicide development, weed ecology, allelopathy, weed management, and exotic weeds. Particularly, there were many presentations and interesting to researchers about the development and use of new herbicides, such as florpyauxifen-benzyl ester, triafamone, fenquinotrione, and tolpyralate. Development of new herbicide formulations and spray methods were suggested as a solution for the population decline in rural area and low labor quality especially in Asia and Pacific regions. In future weedy rice and exotic weeds will be a serious problem in this area so we need to cooperate to make good technical and practical solutions.

This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence and distribution of herbicide resistant weeds at rice fields in Chungnam province of Korea in 2017. Herbicide-resistant weeds occurred in 64,782 ha, which comprise 47.0% of the total paddy field area of Chungnam province. The infested area of herbicide resistant weeds was estimated in Seosan-si (11.9%), Nonsan-si (11.1%), Dangjin-si (10.9%), Boryeong-si (9.2%) and Asan-si (7.8%). The most dominant herbicide resistant weeds in rice fields were Monochoria vaginalis, followed by Lindernia dubia, Schoenoplectus juncoides, Echinochloa oryzicola, Cyperus difformis and Sagittaria trifolia. Herbicide resistant M. vaginalis, L. dubia, and S. juncoides occurred throughout Chungnam province, and herbicide resistant S. trifolia was only found in Dangjin-si. Compared with the 2011 survey, the infested area of herbicide-resistant weeds decreased, but the incidence rates were similar. The herbicide rotation with different modes of actions across growing seasons is recommended to control herbicide-resistant weeds in the infested fields. It is necessary to monitor herbicide resistance regularly and conduct integrated herbicide resistance management in this area.
Large patch caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 (IV) is one of the most serious diseases in zoysiagrass. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the in vitro fungicidal effect and in field control of large patch disease of Paraffin oil. In the field experiments, paraffin oil was applied with 1 L/$m^2$ after diluted at 5 ml to 20 ml of oil/1 L of water for the control of large patch on Zoysia japonica in golf course. The same material was tested for inhibition of mycelial growth in vitro. Paraffin oil at 0.5% and 2.0% had a fungicidal effect by 43 to 67% on R. solani AG2-2 (IV) in vitro. In two locations of the field experiments, the paraffin oil provided moderate protection of large patch. It was effective in suppressing large patch development by 48.0% in comparison with a water check after one time application on mid-September in golf course. Paraffin oil may be used as an alternative control agent for environment friendly management of large patch on Zoysiagrass in golf course.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of the late fall fertilization applied with methyl urea(MU), compound chemical fertilizer(CF), humate(HM), and organic compost fertilizer(NS) on spring greenup of creeping bentgrass at following year. The plots were treated with various snow cover periods before transforming to ski slopes from golf holes during 2007 fall to 2008 spring. The highest visual quality and greenup rate were shown on MU or HM applications at 10 days before snow cover treatment. The CF treatment which had a highest phosphorus rate was most effective with a 13 cm of root length at the reconversion date to golf hole from ski slope of the following spring. However, the application of CF followed by immediate snow cover showed the worst results on visual quality and green color caused by a leaf burning damage from the residual effect of CF. At least 10 days were required to avoid phytotoxicant from undissolved granular of CF before snow cover practise. The application of NS showed the highest result on leaf dry weight at no snow cover plot in next spring, but not on green color and visual quality. Therefore, the proper interval period of snow cover after late fall fertilization should be an important management skill on the spring greenup of creeping bentgrass on following year transforming from ski slope to golf hole.
