Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) serves as an irreplaceable tool to probe the complexities of multiphase flow and identify turbulent mechanisms that elude conventional experimental measurement techniques. The insights unlocked via its careful analysis can be used to guide the formulation and development of turbulence models used in multiphase computational fluid dynamics simulations of nuclear reactor applications. Here, we perform statistical analyses of DNS bubbly flow data generated by Bolotnov ($Re_{\tau}=400$) and LueTryggvason ($Re_{\tau}=150$), examining single-point statistics of mean and turbulent liquid properties, turbulent kinetic energy budgets, and two-point correlations in space and time. Deformability of the bubble interface is shown to have a dramatic impact on the liquid turbulent stresses and energy budgets. A reduction in temporal and spatial correlations for the streamwise turbulent stress (uu) is also observed at wall-normal distances of $y^+=15$, $y/{\delta}=0.5$, and $y/{\delta}=1.0$. These observations motivate the need for adaptation of length and time scales for bubble-induced turbulence models and serve as guidelines for future analyses of DNS bubbly flow data.

A consideration on the trubulence models for describing the redeveloping turbulent boundary layer beyond separation-reattachment in the flow over a backward-facing step is given through experimental and numerical studies. By considering the blance among the measured values of respective terms in the transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energy and the turbulent shear stress, the recovering process of the redeveloping boundary layer from non-equilibrium to equilibrium has been investigated, which takes place slowly over a substantial distance in the downstream direction. In the numerical study, the standard K-.epsilon. model and the Reynolds stress model have been applied to two kinds of flow regions, one for the entire downstream region after the backward-facing step and another for the downstream region after reattachment. Then the results are compared to a meaningful extent, with the experimental values of the turbulent kinetic energy k, the turbulent energy production term P, the dissipation term K-.epsilon. model, a necessity for a new modelling has been brought forward, which can be also applied to the case of the nonequlibrium turbulent flow.
Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of Reynolds number on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}=180$, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Dynamic subgrid-scale models for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses and mass fluxes were employed to close the governing equations. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows with constant mass flux imposed at the wall are studied for Sc=0.71. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. To show the effects of Reynolds number on the turbulent mass transfer, the mean concentration profile, root-mean-square of concentration fluctuations, turbulent mass fluxes, cross-correlation coefficient, turbulent diffusivity and turbulent Schmidt number are presented.
Investigating coal combustion in a large-scale boiler using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) requires a combination of flow and reaction models. These models include a number of rate constants which are often difficult to determine or validate for particular coals or furnaces. Nonetheless, CFD plays an important role in developing new combustion technologies and improving the operation. In this study, the model selection and rate constants for coal devolatilization, char conversion, and turbulent reaction were evaluated for a commercial wall-firing boiler. The influence of devolatilization and char reaction models was found not significant on the overall temperature distribution and heat transfer rate. However, the difference in the flame shapes near the burners were noticeable. Compared to the coal conversion models, the rate constant used for the eddy dissipation rate of gaseous reactions had a larger influence on the temperature and heat transfer rate. Based on the operation data, a value for the rate constant was recommended.

The mean concentration profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The effects of Reynolds number on the turbulent mass transfer are identified in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor) and instantaneous concentration fields. The budgets of turbulent mass fluxes and concentration variance were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on turbulent mass transfer. Furthermore, to understand the correlation between near-wall turbulence structure and concentration fluctuation, we present an octant analysis in the vicinity of the pipe wall.
Dam-break flow occurs when an elevated dam suddenly collapses, resulting in the catastrophic release of rapid and uncontrolled impounded water. This study compares laminar and turbulent closure models for simulating three-dimensional dam-break flows using OpenFOAM. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, specifically the k-ε model, is employed to capture turbulent dissipation. Two scenarios are evaluated based on a laboratory experiment and a modified multi-layered block obstacle scenario. Both models effectively represent dam-break flows, with the turbulent closure model reducing oscillations. However, excessive dissipation in turbulent models can underestimate water surface profiles. Improving numerical schemes and grid resolution enhances flow recreation, particularly near structures and during turbulence. Model stability is more significantly influenced by numerical schemes and grid refinement than the use of turbulence closure. The k-ε model's reliance on time-averaging processes poses challenges in representing dam-break profiles with pronounced discontinuities and unsteadiness. While simulating turbulence models requires extensive computational efforts, the performance improvement compared to laminar models is marginal. To achieve better representation, more advanced turbulence models like Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) are recommended, necessitating small spatial and time scales. This research provides insights into the applicability of different modeling approaches for simulating dam-break flows, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation near structures and during turbulence.
NOx formation in turbulent flames is strongly coupled with temperature, superequilibrium concentration of O radical, and residence time. This implies that in order to accurately predict NO level, it is necessary to develop sophisticated models able to account for the complex turbulent combustion processes including turbulence/chemistry interaction and radiative heat transfer. The present study numerically investigates the turbulent nonpremixed hydrogen jet flames using the laminar flamelet model. Flamelet library is constructed by solving the modified Peters equations and the turbulent combustion model is extended to nonadiabatic flame by introducing the enthalpy defect. The effects of turbulent fluctuation are taken into account by the presumed joint PDFs for mixture fraction, scalar dissipation rate, and enthalpy defect. The predictive capability of the present model has been validated against the detailed experimental data. Effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.

A turbulent wake generated by a cylinder in nozzle contraction affects to the jet flow characteristics. In this study, a computational work to investigate the effect of the turbulent wake on two-dimensional subsonic jet was carried out with three different kinds of nozzle. Computations are applied to the two-dimensional unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations. Several kinds of turbulent models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. It was known that the wake flow enhanced the spread of the jet flow, compared with no wake flow condition. It was also found that the jet core is shortened by the wake flow developed from a control cylinder.

This work is to extend the elliptic operator, which has been already adopted in turbulent stress model, to fully developed turbulent buoyant channel flows with changing the orientation of the buoyancy vector to be perpendicular to the channel walls. The turbulent heat flux models based on the elliptic concept are employed and closely linked to the elliptic blending second moment closure which is used for the prediction of Reynolds stresses. In order to reflect the stable or unstable stratification conditions, the present model introduces the gradient Richardson number into the thermal to mechanical time scale ratio and model coefficients. The present model has been applied for the computation of stably and unstably stratified turbulent channel flows and the prediction results are directly compared to the DNS data.
