The coupled turbulent flow and solidification is considered in a typical slab continuous easting process using commercial program FIDAP. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is modified to decay turbulent viscosity in the mushy zone and laminar viscosity is set to a sufficiently large value at the solid region. This coupled turbulent flow and solidification model also contains thermal contact resistance due to the mold powder and air gap between the strand and mold using an effective thermal conductivity. From the computed flow pattern, the trajectory of inclusion particles was calculated. The comparison between the predicted and experimental solidified shell thickness shows a good agreement.
A general purpose program NUFLEX for the analysis of 3-D heat/fluid flow in complex geometry with pre/post processor have been developed, which consists of a flow solver based on FVM and a dedicated pre/post processor. The program employs a general non-orthogonal grid system and solve laminar and turbulent (lows with standard and RNG $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence models. NUFLEX is capable of analysing two-phase flow with topologically complex interface, turbulent diffusion combustion, solidification problems and magnetic flow. For the purpose of verification of the program and testing the applicability, several practical problems are solved and compared with the available data. Comparison of the NUFLEX results with that by the STAR-CD program has been also made for the same flow configuration and grid structure.

In the first part of the paper, Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of the combusting flow within a high-swirl lean premixed gas turbine combustor and over the $1^{st}$ row nozzle guide vanes is presented. In this analysis, the focus of the investigation is the fluid dynamics at the combustor/turbine interface and its impact on the turbine. The predictions show the existence of a highly-rotating vortex core in the combustor, which is in strong interaction with the turbine nozzle guide vanes. This has been observed to be in agreement with the temperature indicated by thermal paint observations. The results suggest that swirling flow vortex core transition phenomena play a very important role in gas turbine combustors with modern lean-premixed dry low emissions technology. As the predictability of vortex core transition phenomena has not yet been investigated sufficiently, a fundamental validation study has been initiated, with the aim of validating the predictive capability of currently-available modelling procedures for turbulent swirling flows near the sub/supercritical vortex core transition. In the second part of the paper, results are presented which analyse such transitional turbulent swirling flows in two different laboratory water test rigs. It has been observed that turbulent swirling flows of interest are dominated by low-frequency transient motion of coherent structures, which cannot be adequately simulated within the framework of steady-state RANS turbulence modelling approaches. It has been found that useful results can be obtained only by modelling strategies which resolve the three-dimensional, transient motion of coherent structures, and do not assume a scalar turbulent viscosity at all scales. These models include RSM based URANS procedures as well as LES and DES approaches.

The operating point of a small-sized axial fan is strongly dependent upon the system resistance. Therefore, the turbulent flow characteristics around a small-sized axial fan may change significantly according to the operating point. This study represents three-dimensional turbulent flow characteristics around a small-sized axial fan measured at the ideal design point $\phi$=0.25, which is equivalent to the maximum total efficiency point, by using three dimensional fiber-optic type LDA system. This LDA system is composed of a 5 W Argon-ion laser, two optics in back-scatter mode, three BSAs, a PC, and a three-dimensional automatic traversing system. A kind of paraffin fluid is used to supply particles by means of fog generator. Mean velocity profiles downstream of a small-sized axial fan along the radial distance show that the streamwise and the tangential components exist in a predominant manner, while the radial component has a small scale distribution and shows the inflection which its flow direction is inward or outward. Moreover, the turbulent intensity profiles show that the radial component exists the most greatly among turbulent energies.

This study performed the numerical analysis of the internal flow phenomena of 1 kWe-class solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks with internal manifold type and planar cells using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, Star-CCM+. In particular, the locations where the turbulent phenomena occur inside the SOFC stack were investigated. In addition, the laminar flow model and the standard k-ε turbulent model were used to calculate the SOFC stack, separately. And, the calculation results of both laminar and turbulent models were compared. The calculation results showed that turbulent phenomena occurred mainly in the cathode flow. Especially, the turbulent phenomena were found in the cathode inlet/outlet region, and local turbulence occurred in the end plate near the inlet pipe.

In a turbulent free shear flow, the large scale motion is characterized by the intermittent flow which arises from the interaction between the turbulent fluid and the irrotational fluid of the environment through the mean velocity gradient. This large scale motion causes a bulk convection whose effect is similar to the spatial diffusion process. In this paper, the total diffusion process is proposed to be approximated by weighted sum of the bulk convection due to the large scale motion and the usual gradient diffusion due to small scale motion. The diffusion term in conventional .kappa.-.epsilon. model requires on more equation of the intermittency transport equation. A production term of this equation means mass entrainment from the irrotational fluid to the turbulent one. In order to test the validity of the proposed model, a plane jet is predicted by this method. Numerical results of this model is found to yield better agreement with experiment than the standard .kappa.-.epsilon. model and Byggstoyl & Kollmann's model(1986). Present hybrid diffusion model requires further tests for the check of universality of model and for the model constant fix.

This paper reports by simple method that is quickly corrected the effects of fluid temperature for the hot wire anemometer. We are concerned with a variable output of hot wire anemometer on arbitrary fluid temperature. Hot wire by measuring boundary layer of turbulent flow has been calibrated by arbitrary temperature lower than 10$0^{\circ}C$, and velocity lower than 20m/s. As a result, we could pick up the temperature factor affected by output of hot wire anemometer from related in output of arbitrary temperature to output of room temperature. By using temperature factor on the output of hot wire anemometer, we also obtained that the relationship of velocity was of no effect by temperature of fluids. About results of calibrated hot wire, uncertainly of velocity is 2.15% at room temperature and 3.1% at arbitrary temperature.
In the present study, turbulent flows around cubic and L-shape buildings were simulated numerically. Standard ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$, RNG ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$, LES turbulence models were adopted for the present simulation. The wind pressure coefficients from these results were compared with the available experimental data. The result of RNG ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$ and LES turbulent models gave better prediction than that of standard ${\kappa}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model which is widely used in the turbulent flow simulation.
The non-uniform pressure generated in the volute generally are propagating upstream. As a result, outlet conditions of rotaing impeller are changed and the performance degrades. The major object of this research is to develop the numerical method which can calculate the effects of impeller and volute flow field interactions. Under the assumption of steady three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow, the time averaged N-S equations involving $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model was solved by the F.V.M. To verify the computational method, the calculations are compared with experimental results published in literature and show satisfactory agreement with them, The three-dimensional flow characteristics within the volute of a centrifugal fan at design and off-design operating points have also been studied.

A three-dimensional multi-phase flow is simulated around a smooth tire. This simulation is conducted by solving Navier-Stokes equation with a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model. The numerical calculations are carried out by modeling a multi-phase free surface flow mixed with air and water at the inlet. The numerical solutions show an intuitively resonable behavior of water around a moving tire. The calculated pressure around the tire surface along the moving direction is presented. The moving velocities of the tire are chosen to be 30, 40, 60, and 70 km/h. The numerically simulated pressures around the tire are compared with existing experimental data. The comparison shows a new possible tool of analyzing a hydroplaning phenomenon for an automobile tire by means of a computational fluid dynamics.
