In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flow in an oscillator connected to square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are investigated experimentally. In order to investigate wall shear stress and pressure distributions, the experimental studies for air flows we conducted in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV system with the data acquisitions and the processing system. The wall shear stress at bend angle of the $150^{\circ}$ and pressure distribution of the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) by $10^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct are measured. The results obtained from the experiment are summarized as follows : wall shear stress values in the inner wall we larger than those in an outer wall, except for the phase angle (${\omega}t/{\pi}/6$) of 3, because of the intensity of secondary flow. The pressure distributions are the largest in accelerating and decelerating regions at the bend angle(${\phi}$) of $90^{\circ}$ and pressure difference of inner and outer walls is the largest before and after the ${\phi}=90^{\circ}$.
Parallel finite element code has been recently developed for the analysis of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations using domain decomposition method. Metis and MPI libraries are used for the domain partitioning of an unstructured mesh and the data communication between sub-domains, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, 4-step splitting method is combined with P1P1 finite element formulation. Smagorinsky and dynamic model are implemented for the simulation of turbulent flows. For the validation performance-estimation of the developed parallel code, three-dimensional Laplace equation has been solved. It has been found that the speed-up of 40 has been obtained from the present parallel code fir the bench mark problem. Lastly, the turbulent flows around the MIRA model and Tiburon model have been solved using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and unstructured mesh. The computed drag coefficient agrees better with the existing experiment as the mesh resolution of the region increases, where the variation of pressure is severe.
Hot-wire measurements are reported on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating $90^{\circ}$ dog bend. The cross-section of the bend varies from $100mm{\times}50mm$ rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the $50mm{\times}100mm$ shape at the bend outlet with remaining a constant area. Data signals from the rotating test section are transmitted through a slip ring to the personal computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynolds stress components were calculated from the equations which correlate the fluctuating and mean voltage values measured with rotating a slant type hot-wire into 6 orientations. The effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the mean motions and turbulence structures are investigated with respect to rotational speed.
Hot-wire measurements were carried out on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating curved duct. The cross-section of the curved duct varies from 100mm${\times}$50mm rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the 50mm${\times}$100mm rectangular shape at the bend outlet. Experimental setup consists of the test section of $90^{\circ}$ curved duct, rotating disc of 1.95m diameter, Ag-Ni precision slip ring, automatic traversing mechanism, variable speed motor, centrifugal blower, orifice flowmeter and hot-wire anemometer. Data signals from the rotating curved duct are transmitted through the slip ring to the computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynold stresses components were obtained from the fluctuating and mean voltage measured by the slant type hot-wire probe rotating into 6 orientations. We investigate the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the turbulence structure.
Experiments of shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer suction on normal shock-wave oscillations caused by shock wave/boundary layer interaction in a straight duct. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the top and bottom walls of the duct to bleed turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled below the range of 11 per cent. Time-mean and fluctuating wall pressures were measured, and Schlieren optical observations were made to investigate time-mean flow field. Time variations in the shock wave displacement were obtained by a high-speed camera system. The results show that boundary layer suction by slits considerably reduce shock-wave oscillations. For the design Mach number of 2.3, the maximum amplitude of the oscillating shock-wave reduces by about 75% compared with the case of no slit for boundary layer suction.
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flows up to $Re_{\tau}=1270$ are performed to investigate an elliptic feature and strain rate field on cross sections of coherent fine scale eddies (CFSEs) in wall turbulence. From DNS results, the CFSEs are educed and the strain rate field around the eddy is analyzed statistically. The principal strain rates (i.e. eigenvalues of the strain rate tensor) at the CFSE centers are scaled by the Kolmogorov length $\eta$ and velocity $U_k$. The most expected maximum (stretching) and minimum (compressing) eigenvalues at the CFSE centers are independent of the Reynolds number in each $y^+$ region (i. e. near-wall, logarithmic and wake regions). The elliptic feature of the CFSE is observed in the distribution of phase-averaged azimuthal velocity on a plane perpendicular to the rotating axis of the CFSE $(\omega_c)$. Except near the wall, phase-averaged maximum $(\gamma^{\ast}/\gamma_c^{\ast})$ and minimum $(\alpha^{\ast}/\alpha_c^{\ast})$ an eigenvalues show maxima on the major axis around the CFSE and minima on the minor axis near the CFSE center. This results in high energy dissipation rate around the CFSE.
The local preconditioning method has both robust convergence and accurate solutions by using local flow properties for parameters in the preconditioning matrix. Preconditioning methods have been very effective to low speed inviscid flows. In the viscous and turbulent flows, deterioration of convergence should be overcame on the high aspect ratio grids to get better convergence and accuracy. In the present study, the local time stepping and min-CFL/max-VNN definitions are applied to compare the results and we propose the method that switches between two methods. The min-CFL definition is applied for inviscid flow problems and the min-CFL/max-VNN definition is implemented to viscous and turbulent flow problems.
A numerical study has been carried out of three-dimensional turbulent flows around a MIRA reference vehicle model both with and without wheels in computation. Two convective difference schemes with two k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence models are evaluated for the performance such as drag coefficient, velocity and pressure fields. Pressure coefficients along the surfaces of the model are compared with experimental data. The drag coefficient, the velocity and pressure fields are found to change considerably with the adopted finite difference schemes. Drag forces computed in the various regions of the model indicate that design change decisions should not rely just on the total drag and that local flow structures are important. The results also indicate that the RNG model with the QUICK scheme predicts fairly well the tendency of velocity and pressure fields and gives more reliable drag coefficient rather than the other cases.
The phenomena of two-phase suspension flows appear widely in nature and industrial processes. Hence, it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of the gas-solid two-phase flows. In the present study, the numerical simulation has been approached by utilizing the Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology for describing the characteristics of the fluid and particulate phases in a vertical pipe and a 90°square-sectioned bend. The continuous phase(gas phase) is described by the Eulerian formulation and a κ-ε turbulence model is employed to find mean and turbulent properties of the gas phase. The particle properties(velocity and trajectory) are then described by a Lagrangian approach and computed using the mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating velocity of the gas phase. The predictions are compared with measurements by laser-Doppler velocimeter for the validation. As a result, the calculated results show good agreements.
The Interactions of shock wave with turbulent boundary layers in high-speed flows cause complex flowfields which result in increased adverse pressure gradients, skin friction and temperature. Accurate and reliable prediction of such phenomena is needed in designing high-speed propulsion systems. Such analyses of the complex flowfields require sophisticated numerical scheme that can resolve interactions between shock wave and boundary layers accurately. Therefore the purpose of the present. article is to introduce an accurate and efficient mixed explicit-implicit generalized Galerkin finite element method. To demonstrate the validity of the theory and numerical procedure, several benchmark cases are investigated.
