Mean surface pressures and overall wind loads on hemispherical domes immersed in a boundary layer were obtained by numerical simulation. The effects of alternative turbulence models, Reynolds Number and surface roughness were examined and compared with earlier studies. Surface pressures on dual hemispherical domes were also calculated for three wind orientations ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$) to evaluate flow field interactions. Calculated values were compared to wind-tunnel measurements made in equivalent flow conditions.
A tornado changes its wind speed and direction rapidly; therefore, it is difficult to study the effects of a tornado on buildings in a wind tunnel. The status of the tornado-structure interaction and various models of the tornado wind field found in literature are surveyed. Three dimensional computer modeling work using the turbulence model based on large eddy simulation is presented. The effect of a tornado on a cubic building is considered for this study. The Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are approximated by finite difference method, and solved by an semi-implicit procedure. The force coefficients are plotted in time to study the effect of the Rankine combined vortex model. The tornado is made to translate at a $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ angle, and the grid resolution is refined. Some flow visualizations are also reported to understand the flow behavior around the cube.
The developed concept of smart flow control based on turbulence scale modification was applied to control a flow around a circular cylinder. The concept was realized using arrays of vortex-generators regularly spaced along a cylinder generatrix with a given step. Mechanical and thermal vortex-generators were tested, the latter having been based on the localized surface heating or plasma discharges initiated with microwave radiation near the surface. Thus depending on a particular engineering solution, flow transport properties could be modified in passive or active ways. Matched numerical and experimental investigations showed a possibility to delay flow separation and, accordingly, to improve the aerodynamic performance of blunt bodies.
NOx formation in turbulent flames is strongly coupled with temperature, superequilibrium concentration of O radical, and residence time. This implies that in order to accurately predict NO level, it is necessary to develop sophisticated models able to account for the complex turbulent combustion processes including turbulence/chemistry interaction and radiative heat transfer. The present study numerically investigates the turbulent nonpremixed hydrogen jet flames using the laminar flamelet model. Flamelet library is constructed by solving the modified Peters equations and the turbulent combustion model is extended to nonadiabatic flame by introducing the enthalpy defect. The effects of turbulent fluctuation are taken into account by the presumed joint PDFs for mixture fraction, scalar dissipation rate, and enthalpy defect. The predictive capability of the present model has been validated against the detailed experimental data. Effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.
A numerical study for simulating a swirling pulverized coal combustion in axisymmetric geometry is done here by applying the weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) approach with the discrete ordinate method (DOM) to model the radiative heat transfer equation. In the radiative transfer equation, the same polynomial equation and coefficients for weighting factors as those for gas are adopted for the coal/char particles as a function of partial pressure and particle temperature. The Eulerian balance equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species mass fractions are adopted with the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, whereas the Lagrangian approach is used for the particulate phase for soot. The eddydissipation model is employed for the reaction rate for gaseous mixture, and the single-step first-order reaction model for the devolatilization process for coal. By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the models used here are confirmed and found to be one of good alternatives for simulating the combustion as well as radiative characteristics.
The LES-based level-set flamelet model has been applied to analyze the turbulent propane/air premixed bluff-body flame with a highly wrinkled flame fronts. The present study has been motivated to investigate the interaction between the flame front and turbulent eddies. Special emphasis is given to study the effect of G equation filtering treatment on the precise structure of turbulent premixed flames as well as the effect of sub-grid scale (SGS) eddies on the wrinkling of the flame surface. The level-set/flamelet model has been adopted to account for the effect of turbulence-flame interaction as well as to properly capture the flame front. Numerical results indicate that the present LES-based level-set flamelet approach has a capability to realistically simulate the highly non-stationary turbulent premixed flame.
The Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM) has been presented for the solution of population balance equation in the wide range of the multi-phase flows. This method has the inherently interesting features which can be easily applied to the multi-inner variable equation. In addition, DQMOM is capable of easily coupling the gas phase with the discrete phases while it requires the relatively low computational cost. Soot inception, subsequent aggregation, surface growth and oxidation are described through a population balance model solved with the DQMOM for soot formation. This approach is also able to represent the evolution of the soot particle size distribution. The turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the laminar flamelet model together with the presumed PDF approach and the spherical harmonic P-1 approximation is adopted to account for the radiative heat transfer.

A numerical procedure is introduced to calculate local ventilation effectiveness using the definitions of local decay rate and local mean age. A low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distributions, and a step-down method is used to calculate transient concentration distributions. Simulations are carried out for several different values of air change rates and several different diffuser angles in a two-dimensional model of a half scale office room. The results show that the local ventilation effectiveness within a room could vary significantly from one location to another. The nominal air change rate based on the assumption of complete mixing of room air does not provide the local ventilation effectiveness information. It is numerically proved that the local mean age distribution obtained from the transient calculation is equivalent to the steady state concentration distribution with homogeneously distributed contaminant sources.
To develop the code of predicting flow-field and aeroacoustic noise by an electrical cable, a combined CFD-Acoustic analogy approach is selected. The two dimensional, unsteady and incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver with κ-ω and κ-ω SST turbulence modeling is used to calculate the near flow-field around an electric cable. Near-field results are then coupled with two-dimensional Curle's integral formulation based upon Lighthill's acoustic analogy with the assumption of acoustic compactness. To validate this code, numerical results are compared with experimental data for a circular cylinder. The simulation shows an overprediction on acoustic amplitudes, but overally speaking, the spectrum pattern of sound pressure agrees well with experiment within an acceptable amount of error. In addition, a few cross-sections of the cable were selected and tested with each other in terms of drag and radiated noise

A Numerical Simulation which uses preconditioning algorithm to examine unsteady combustion processes for the AP/HTPB propellant with a converging-diverging nozzle has been compared with experimental data for solid rocket motor. To analysis reacting flow of solid rocket motor, unsteady pressure, temperature contour was simulated by grid moving of propellant.
