  • Some numerical investigations are presented concerning the response of a given plate under turbulence driven excitations. Three different input loads are simulated according to the wall pressure distributions derived from the models proposed by Corcos, Efimtsov and Chase, respectively. Modal solutions (finite element based) are used for building the modal stochastic responses in the sub-critical aerodynamic frequency range. The parametric investigations concern two different values of the structural damping and three values of the boundary layer thickness. A final comparison with available experimental data is also discussed. The results demonstrate that the selection of the adequate TBL input model is still the most critical step in order to get a good prediction.

  • The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the fuel-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Numerical results indicate that for highly diluted case, the flame structure is dominantly influenced by the turbulence-chemistry interaction and marginally modified by the radiation effect. On the other hand, no-dilution case with the longer flight time and the relatively intermediate scalar dissipation rate is influenced strongly by the radiative cooling as well as moderately by the turbulence-chemistry interaction.

  • Flow measurements on the propeller plane of a 180,000 TDW Bulk Carrier model are carried out using a 3D fiber optics LDV at a towing tank. Mean velocities are successfully obtained. The turbulence characteristics such as Reynolds stresses, skewnesses, and flatnesses, are also investigated. However, those turbulence characteristics may include some errors due to the characteristics of the towing-tank experiments.

  • Evacuation performance, starting transient, and plume blowback at diffuser breakdown of a straight cylindrical supersonic exhaust diffuser with no externally supplied secondary flow are investigated. Pressure records in the transitional periods are measured by a small-scale cold-gas simulator. Flow-fields evolving in the diffuser-type ejector are solved by preconditioned Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a low-Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model edited for turbulence compressibility effects. The present RANS method is properly validated with measured static wall pressure distributions and evacuation level at steady operation as well as the pressure records during the transition regime.

  • The wind flow over two-dimensional sinusoidal hilly obstacles with slope (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.5 has been investigated experimentally and numerically. Experiments for single and double sinusoidal hill models were carried out in a subsonic wind tunnel. The mean velocity profiles, turbulence statistics, and surface pressure distributions were measured at the Reynolds number based on the obstacle height(h=40 mm) of $2.6{\times}10^4$. The reattachment points behind the obstacles were determined using the oil-ink dot and tuft methods. The smoke-wire method was employed to visualize the flow structure qualitatively. The finite-volume-method and the SIMPLE-C algorithm with an orthogonal body-fitted grid were used for numerical simulation. Comparison of mean velocity profiles between the experiments and the numerical simulation shows a good agreement except for the separation region, however, the surface pressure data show almost similar distributions.

  • In present study, a parametric study of a centrifugal compressor with inlet treatment has been performed numerically using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The shear stress transport turbulence model was used for analysis of turbulence. The finite volume method and unstructured grid system were used for the numerical solution. Tested parameters were related to the geometry of the inlet duct. It was found that the application of circumferentially distributed holes in the inlet duct improves operational stability of the compressor compared to that with conventional inlet duct.

  • A commercial CFD code is used to compute the 3-D viscous flow field within the impeller o( a centrifugal pump. Several preliminary numerical calculations are carried out to determine the influence of the parameters such as the grid systems, the numerical schemes, the turbulence models and the shape of the vaneless diffusers at the design flow rate. The results of the preliminary study are used for the calculation of the off-design flow conditions. The circumferentially averaged results such as the radial and tangential velocities, the exit flow angle, the slip factor, the static pressure and the total pressure are compared with the experimental data at the impeller exit to discuss the influence of the prescribed parameters.

  • This paper presents a procedure for the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of a sirocco fan. For the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses of the sirocco fan, three-dimensional steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a shear stress transport turbulence model for turbulence closure. The flow analyses were performed on a hexahedral grid using a finite-volume solver. The validation of the numerical results is performed by comparing with experimental data for the pressure, efficiency and power. The internal flow analyses of the sirocco fan are performed to understand the unstable flow phenomenon on the casing for the wall pressure and internal flow characteristics at each position. It was found that fluctuation of pressure and locally concentrated noise source are observed near the cut-off and expansion regions of the casing.

  • Three dimensional turbulent flow fields around ships are simulated by a numerical method. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used where Reynolds stresses are approximated by Baldwin-Lomax and Sub-Grid Scale(SGS) turbulence models. Body-fitted coordinate system is introduced to conform three dimensional ship geometries. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method. Temporal derivatives are approximated by the forward differencing and the convection terms are approximated by the QUICK or Kawamura scheme. The 2nd-order centered differencing is used for other spatial derivatives. Pressure and velocity fields are simultaneously iterated by the Highly Simplified Marker-And-Cell method. To verify the numerical method and turbulence models, flow fields around ships are simulated and compared to the experiments.
