Liquid lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor is one of the most promising reactor types among the fourth-generation nuclear energy systems. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) are completely different from ordinary fluids due to its special thermal properties, causing that the traditional Reynolds analogy is no longer recommended and appropriate. More accurate turbulence flow and heat transfer model for the liquid metal lead-bismuth should be developed and applied in CFD simulation. In this paper, a specific CFD solver for simulating the flow and heat transfer of liquid lead-bismuth based on the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model was developed based on the open source platform OpenFOAM. Then the advantage of proposed model was demonstrated and validated against a set of experimental data. Finally, the simulation of LBE turbulent flow and heat transfer in a 7-pin wire-wrapped rod bundle with the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model was carried out. The influence of wire on the flow and heat transfer characteristics and the three-dimensional distribution of key thermal hydraulic parameters such as temperature, cross-flow velocity and Nusselt number were studied and presented. Compared with the traditional SED model with a constant Prt = 1.5 or 2.0, the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model is more accurate on predicting the turbulence flow and heat transfer of liquid lead-bismuth. The average relative error of the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model is reduced by 11.1% at most under the simulation conditions in this paper. This work is meaningful for the thermal hydraulic analysis and structure design of fuel assembly in the liquid lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor.
Turbocharger has been widely used in many passenger cars in application with diesel engines because of high power and fuel efficiency. However, flow-induced noise (whoosh or hissing noise) which is generated within the compressor during its operation at marginal surge line can deteriorate noise characteristics. Hissing noise excitation was associated with the generation of turbulence within the turbocharger compressor and radiated through the transmission path in turbocharger system. In this study, a sharp-edged reactive-type muffler was devised and installed in the transmission path to reduce the hissing noise. Acoustic and fluid dynamic characteristics for the muffler were investigated which is related to the unsteadiness of turbulence and pressure in turbocharger system. A transfer matrix method was used to analyze the transmission loss of the muffler. Simple expansion muffler with extended tube of the reactive type is proposed for the reduction of high frequency component noise. Turbulence computation was carried out by a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. An optimal design condition of the muffler was obtained by extensive acoustic and fluid dynamic analysis on the engine dynamometer with anechoic chamber. A significant reduction of the hissing noise was achieved at the optimal design of the muffler as compared with the conventional turbocharger system.

Unsteady flow simulations through a transonic turbine vane were carried out for an isentropic Mach number of 1.02 and a Reynolds number of $10^6$. The main objective of the study is to investigate the effect of unsteadiness due to vortex shedding on the flow in transonic regime. The steady and the time-averaged unsteady results by employing three different turbulence models: shear stress transport (SST), k-${\omega}$, and ${\omega}$ Reynolds stress models were compared. The comparisons were emphasized on the isentropic Mach number along the blade and total pressure loss at the cascade exit. The results showed that both steady and unsteady calculations have good agreement with experimental data along the blade surface. However, at cascade exit, the unsteady calculations have much better agreement with experimental data than steady calculations. Based on these, we conclude that the unsteady flow calculations are essential for these types of problems.

The effects of secondary flow on the structure of a turbulent wake generated by a flat plate was investigated experimentally. The secondary flow was induced In a $90^{\circ}$ curved duct in which the flat plate wake generator was installed. The wake generator was installed in such a way that the wake velocity gradient exists in the span wise direction of the curved duct. Measurements were made in the plane containing the mean radius of curvature where pressure gradient and curvature effects were small compared with the secondary flow effect. All six components of the Reynolds stresses were measured in the curved duct. Turbulence intensities in the curved wake are higher than those in the straight wake due to an increase of the turbulent kinetic energy production by the secondary flow. In the inner wake region, shear stress and strain in the plane containing the velocity gradient of the wake show opposite signs with respect to each other, so that eddy viscosity Is negative in this region. This indicates that gradient-diffusion type turbulence models are not appropriate to simulate this type of flow.
Although there are many activities on the construction of wind farm to produce amount of power from the wind, in practice power productions are not as much as its expected capabilities. This is because a lack of both the prediction of wind resources and the aerodynamic analysis on turbines with far wake effects. In far wake region, there are velocity deficits and increases of the turbulence intensity which lead to the power losses of the next turbine and the increases of dynamic loadings which could reduce system's life. The analysis on power losses and the increases of fatigue loadings in the wind farm is needed to prevent these unwanted consequences. Therefore, in this study velocity deficits have been predicted and aerodynamic analysis on turbines in the far wake is carried out from these velocity profiles. Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model is adopted to determine a wake velocity and aerodynamic analysis on wind turbines is predicted by the numerical methods such as blade element momentum theory(BEMT) and vortex lattice method(VLM). The results show that velocity recovery is more rapid in the wake region with higher turbulence intensity. Since the velocity deficit is larger when the turbine has higher thrust coefficient, there is a huge aerodynamic power loss at the downstream turbine.

An efficient time-domain numerical method for the analysis of broadband noise generation and propagation due to turbulence-cascade interaction is developed. The core algorithm of the present method is based on the B-periodicity of the acoustic response function of the flat-airfoil cascade to the ingesting gust(B denotes the number of airfoils in the cascade). To confirm this periodicity, gust-cascade interaction problem are solved by using the time-domain method, which shows that the incident gust with the circumferential mode number having the same remainders when divided by the airfoil number excites the same acoustic response of the cascade. Using the proposed fast algorithm with this periodicity, we show that the total computation time for the model broadband problem using the total 525 incident gust modes can be reduced to about 1/4 of that taken in using the previous time-domain program.

The computations of chemically reacting laminar and turbulent flows are performed using the preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver coupled with turbulent transport and multi-species equations. A low-Reynolds number $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model proposed by Chien is used. The presence of the turbulent kinetic energy tenn in the momentum equation can materially affect the overall stability of the fluids-turbulence system. Because of this coupling effect, a fully coupled formulation is desirable and this approach is taken in the present study. Choi and Merkle's preconditioning technique is used to overcome the convergence difficulties occurred at low speed flows. The numerical scheme used for the present study is based on the implicit upwind ADI algorithm and is validated through the comparisons of computational and experimental results for laminar methane-air diffusion flame and $ H_2/O_2$ reacting turbulent shear flow. Preconditioning formulation shows better convergence characteristics than that of non-preconditioned system by approximately five times as much.

The structural vibrations of a flat plate induced by fluctuating wall pressures within wall-bounded transonic jet flow downstream of a high-aspect ratio rectangular nozzle are simulated. The wall pressures are calculated using Hybrid RANS/LES CFD, where LES models the large-scale turbulence in the shear layers downstream of the nozzle. The structural vibrations are computed using modes from a finite element model and a time-domain forced response calculation methodology. At low flow speeds, the convecting turbulence in the shear layers loads the plate in a manner similar to that of turbulent boundary layer flow. However, at high nozzle pressure ratio discharge conditions the flow over the panel becomes transonic, and the shear layer turbulence scatters from shock cells just downstream of the nozzle, generating backward traveling low frequency surface pressure loads that also drive the plate. The structural mode shapes and subsonic and transonic surface pressure fields are transformed to wavenumber space to better understand the nature of the loading distributions and individual modal responses. Modes with wavenumber distributions which align well with those of the pressure field respond strongly. Negative wavenumber loading components are clearly visible in the transforms of the supersonic flow wall pressures near the nozzle, indicating backward propagating pressure fields. In those cases the modal joint acceptances include significant contributions from negative wavenumber terms.
We study the properties of supernova (SN) driven interstellar turbulence with a numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. Calculations were done using the RIEMANN framework for MHD, which is highly suited for astrophysical flows because it tracks shocks using a Riemann solver and ensures pressure positivity and a divergence-free magnetic field. We start our simulations with a uniform density threaded by a uniform magnetic field. A simplified radiative cooling curve and a constant heating rate are also included. In this radiatively-cooling magnetized medium, we explode SNe one at a time at randomly chosen positions with SN explosion rates equal to and 12 times higher than the Galactic value. The evolution of the system is basically determined by the input energy of SN explosions and the output energy of radiative cooling. We follow the simulations to the point where the total energy of the system, as well as thermal, kinetic, and magnetic energy individually, has reached a quasi-stationary value. From the numerical experiments, we find that: i) both thermal and dynamical processes are important in determining the phases of the interstellar medium, and ii) the power index n of the $B-p^n$ relation is consistent with observed values.
