The effect of turbulence and ignition energy on flame kernel growth in mathanol-air mixtures has been studied in a constant volume vessel. Experiments were made under different turbulent intensity conditions, ignition energy and over a range of equivalence ratio. Characteristics of turbulent flow were grasped by measurments of gas pressure and visualization of flame propagation. Flow velocity was measured by use of hot wire anemometer. A comparison of the effect of turbulence on ignition probability and flame kernel volume variation ratio is also presented.
We investigate the driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effect of the expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of the strength and characteristic length scales of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with the expansion and collapse of background medium, the time evolution of the magnetic and kinetic energy densities depends on the nature of forcing as well as the rate of expansion and collapse. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic length scales, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our results.

The paper reports the outcome of a numerical study of flow over idealized L-shaped ribleted surfaces with two-equation turbulence models. In the present study, the Launder and Sharma's k-.epsilon. turbulence model (LS model) is basically N employed, but with a little modification of the additional .epsilon.-source term without affecting its level under 2-dimensional straining in which the term has been calibrated. Compared to the original LS model, the present model has predicted greatly improved drag reduction behavior for this geometry. As a drag reduction mechanism, it is found that the skin-friction in the riblet valleys might be sufficient to overcome the skin-friction increase near the riblet tip. The present predicted results are in good agreement with the recent DN S ones by Choi et al. (1993): differences in the mean velocity prof ile and turbulence quantities are found to be limited to the riblet cavity region. It is also found that turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress above the riblets are also reduced in drag-reducing configurations.

With the assumption of the diffusion dominated flow, a numerical model has been developed for undertow and turbulence structure under the breaking wave by using the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Undertow is a strong mean current which moves seqwards below the level of wave trough in the surf zone. The turbulence, generated by wave breaking in the roller, spreads and dissipates downwards. The governing equations are composed of the equation of motion with the period-averaged shear stress due to waves; $textsc{k}$- and $\varepsilon$-equations with the turbulence energy Production due to wave breaking. They are discretised by the three-level fully implicit scheme, which can be solved by using Thomas algorithm. The model gives good agreements with measurements except for the station that is closest to the breaking point.

A method of synthetic time series generation was developed and applied to the simulation of homogeneous turbulence in a periodic 3 - D box and the hourly wind data simulation. The method can simulate almost exact sample auto and cross correlations of multiple time series and control non-Gaussian distribution. Using the turbulence simulation, influence of correlations, non-Gaussian distribution, and one-direction anisotropy on homogeneous structure were studied by investigating the spatial distribution of turbulence kinetic energy and enstrophy. An hourly wind data of Typhoon Robin was used to illustrate a capability of the method to simulate sample cross correlations of multiple time series. The simulated typhoon data shows a similar shape of fluctuations and almost exactly the same sample auto and cross correlations of the Robin.
Downbursts are acknowledged for being a major loading hazard for horizontally-extending structures like transmission line systems. With these structures being inherently flexible, it is important to characterize the turbulence associated with the wind flow of downburst events being essential to quantify dynamic excitations on structures. Accordingly, the current study numerically characterizes the downburst wind field of open terrain simulated at the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) dome testing facility at The University of Western Ontario in Canada through a high-resolution large eddy simulation (LES). The study validates the numerical simulation considering both the mean and the turbulent components of the flow. It then provides a detailed visual description of the flow at WindEEE through the capabilities enabled by LES to identify the key factors affecting the flow. The study also presents the spatial distribution of turbulence intensities and length scales computed from the numerical model and compares them with previous values reported in the literature. The comparison shows the ability of the downburst simulated at WindEEE to reproduce turbulence characteristics similar to those reported from field measurements. The study also indicates that downburst turbulence is well-correlated circumferentially which imposes high correlated loads on horizontally-distributed structures such as transmission lines.

LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. Though chemical reaction was not accounted for, the results can be useful in determining the turbulence characteristics generated by ring and plate. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution for turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity production and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of TR shape and intrusion length did not change the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing is not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.
Turbulence structure and suspended sediment transport capacity in vegetated open-channel flows are investigated numerically in the present paper. The $\textsc{k}-\;\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence closure. Mean velocity and turbulence characteristics including turbulence intensity, Reynolds stress, and production and dissipation of turbulence kinetic energy are evaluated and compared with measurement data available in the literature. The numerical results show that mean velocity is diminished due to the drag provided by vegetation, which results in the reduction of turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress. For submerged vegetation, the shear at the top of vegetation dominates turbulence production, and the turbulence production within vegetation is characterized by wakes. For emergent condition, it is observed that the turbulence generation is dominated by wakes within vegetation. In general, simulated profiles compares favorably to measured data. Computed values of eddy viscosity are used to solve the conservation equation for suspended sediment, yielding sediment concentration more uniform over the depth compared with the one in the plain channel. The simulation reveals that the suspended load decreases as the vegetation density increases and the suspended load increases as the particle diameter decreases for the same vegetation density.
The Global-Korean aviation Turbulence Guidance (G-KTG) system is developed using the operational Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System of Korea Meteorological Administration with 17-km horizontal grid spacing. The G-KTG system provides an integrated solution of various clear-air turbulence (CAT) diagnostics and mountain-wave induced turbulence (MWT) diagnostics for low [below 10 kft (3.05 km)], middle [10 kft (3.05 km) - 20 kft (6.10 km)], and upper [20 kft (6.10 km) - 50 kft (15.24 km)] levels. Individual CAT and MWT diagnostics in the G-KTG are converted to a 1/3 power of energy dissipation rate (EDR). 12-h forecast of the G-KTG is evaluated using 6-month period (2016.06~2016.11) of in-situ EDR observation data. The forecast skill is calculated by area under curve (AUC) where the curve is drawn by pairs of probabilities of detection of "yes" for moderate-or-greater-level turbulence events and "no" for null-level turbulence events. The AUCs of G-KTG for the upper, middle, and lower levels are 0.79, 0.69, and 0.63, respectively. Comparison of the upper-level G-KTG with the regional-KTG in East Asia reveals that the forecast skill of the G-KTG (AUC = 0.77) is similar to that of the regional-KTG (AUC = 0.79) using the Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System with 12-km horizontal grid spacing.
Modeling an equilibrium atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in an empty computational domain has routinely been performed with the k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. However, the research objects of structural wind engineering are bluff bodies, and the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model is more widely used in the numerical simulation of flow around bluff bodies than the k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Therefore, to simulate an equilibrium ABL based on the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model, the inlet profiles of the mean wind speed U, turbulence kinetic energy k, and specific dissipation rate ${\omega}$ are proposed, and the source terms for the U, k and ${\omega}$ are derived by satisfying their corresponding transport equations. Based on the proposed inlet profiles, numerical comparative studies with and without considering the source terms are carried out in an empty computational domain, and an actual numerical simulation with a trapezoidal hill is further conducted. It shows that when the source terms are considered, the profiles of U, k and ${\omega}$ are all maintained well along the empty computational domain and the accuracy of the actual numerical simulation is greatly improved. The present study could provide a new methodology for modeling the equilibrium ABL problem and for further CFD simulations with practical value.
