A centrifugal compressor for HFC-134a has been newly designed and developed. Flow analysis using commercial programs was used to evaluate performance and internal flow of the impeller, inlet guide vane and diffuser etc. The purpose of this study is to establish the design theory necessary to the development of HFC-134a centrifugal compressors and to supply basic data related to design by reviewing design values and experimental values through the performance test. The compressor for HFC-134a was also investigated experimentally to check compression performance. The calculated data coincide the test results of compressor. The data obtained in the present study are useful for design of HFC-134a centrifugal compressors.
The objective of present study is to assess the performance of the first stage compressor in a total 3-stage 5000 HP-level turbo compressor. CFD commercial code, CFX has been used to predict three-dimensional flow characteristics inside of the impeller. Shear Stress Transport (SST) model has been used to simulate turbulent flows through Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. Grid dependency has been also checked to get optimal grid distribution. Numerical results have been compared with the experimental test results to elucidate performance characteristics of the present compressor. In addition, flow characteristics of the impeller only have been studied for various blade configurations. Angular offset in leading edge of the blade has been selected for the optimal blade design. Performance characteristics in region of low mass flow rate and high pressure ratio between the impeller entrance and exit have been investigated for the selection of optimal blade design. Also, flow instability such as stall phenomena has been studied and anti-stall characteristics have been checked for various blade configurations in the operational window.
Centrifugal compressors are widely used and each operating condition is different. However, it cannot be manufactured according to the every operating condition. In the this study, performance of compressor was evaluated with various rotational speeds of impeller and various stagger angles of diffuser in order to apply a typical model widely. A centrifugal compressor was designed and manufactured based on the design point. On this machines, an experiment was conducted and the performance was predicted at off-design point. The performance prediction was validated with the experimental result and the numerical result. Although the isentropic efficiency on the prediction was slightly lower than that on the experimental result due to the heat loss in the experiment, the pressure ratio was predicted well and also the predicted results were matched well with the numerical results. When the rotational speed of the impeller and the stagger angle of the diffuser were changed together, the compressor can be worked in the high efficiency region and avoided operating in the stall region.

Flow-induced vibration analyses have been conducted for a 3D compressor blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responses of designed compressor blades. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D compressor blade for fluid-structure interaction problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous pressure contours on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating compressor blade.

In order to understand dynamic characteristics of centrifugal compressor supported foil bearing, of which normal operating speed is about 20,000 ${\sim}$ 50,000 rpm, the rotor whirl is measured using gap sensors. Not only critical speeds of rotor system but also stability of rotor whirl, which are main concerns of the turbo compressor system, are measured using gap sensors by varying the rotating speed the rotor. The stiffness characteristics of bearing system is shown to be almost invariant according to speed variation by the measurement of eccentricity. In addition, from the directional power spectral density function of the measured vibration signal, the isotropy stiffness characteristics of foil bearing system is discussed.
Turbocharger has been widely used in many passenger cars in application with diesel engines because of high power and fuel efficiency. However, flow-induced noise (whoosh or hissing noise) which is generated within the compressor during its operation at marginal surge line can deteriorate noise characteristics. Hissing noise excitation was associated with the generation of turbulence within the turbocharger compressor and radiated through the transmission path in turbocharger system. In this study, a sharp-edged reactive-type muffler was devised and installed in the transmission path to reduce the hissing noise. Acoustic and fluid dynamic characteristics for the muffler were investigated which is related to the unsteadiness of turbulence and pressure in turbocharger system. A transfer matrix method was used to analyze the transmission loss of the muffler. Simple expansion muffler with extended tube of the reactive type is proposed for the reduction of high frequency component noise. Turbulence computation was carried out by a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. An optimal design condition of the muffler was obtained by extensive acoustic and fluid dynamic analysis on the engine dynamometer with anechoic chamber. A significant reduction of the hissing noise was achieved at the optimal design of the muffler as compared with the conventional turbocharger system.

In this paper, an intake RCV system for low noise turbo engine was developed through optimization process of a geometric path of compressor housing and an open rate of recirculation valve. At first, the critical customer requirement from voice of customer was defined and quality function deployment of an intake RCV system was executed. And then, the renovative concept design using pugh matrix method was selected as final concept for satisfaction of requirement. Simultaneously, system analysis was carried by function diagram and fishbone diagram. Next, control factors and levels for the optimal design were performed. And, the optimal design of an intake RCV system was studied using design of experiment. Conclusively, we achieved not only cancellation tip-out noise at the driving condition but also improvement of NVH commodity through optimization process of an intake RCV system, which is optimal configuration of compressor housing and recirculation valve.

This paper presented a case study on the application of on-line wear monitoring technique to a high duty air-turbo-compressor system. Main objects monitored were a gear unit and metal bearings, both shown frequent troubles due to the severe operation conditions at heavy dynamic load. The air-turbo-compressor system needs secure condition monitoring because it is one of the main utilities in steel making industry. Temperature and vibration characteristics have been mainly on-line monitored in this system for a predictive maintenance; however, it has been shown that they are not fairly good enough to give an early warning prior to the machine failure. In this work, an on-line Opto Magnetic Detector(OMD) was implemented for an on-line wear monitoring, which quantitatively measured the contamination level of both ferrous and non-ferrous wear particles by detecting the change in optical density of used oil. Results showed that the application of on-line OMD system was satisfactory in diagnosis of the machine system.

The performance of gas turbines is decreased as their operating hours increase. Fouling in the axial compressor is one of main reasons for the performance degradation of gas turbine. Airborne particles entering with air at the inlet into compressor adhere to the blade surface and result in the change of the blade shape, which is closely and sensitively related to the compressor performance. It is difficult to exactly analyze the mechanism of the compressor fouling because the growing process of the fouling is very slow and the dimension of the fouled depth on the blade surface is very small compared with blade dimensions. In this study, an improved analytic method to predict the motion of particles in compressor cascades and their deposition onto blade is proposed. Simulations using proposed method and their comparison with field data demonstrate the feasibility of the model. It if found that some important parameters such as chord length, solidity and number of stages, which represent the characteristics of compressor geometry, are closely related to the fouling phenomena. And, the particle sloe and patterns of their distributions are also Important factors to predict the fouling phenomena in the axial compressor of the gas turbine.
