For hydrogen-cooled large turbine generators, partial discharges in ground wall insulations are suppressed by high hydrogen pressure. The first goal of the experiment is to investigate the effect of hydrogen pressure on partial discharge activity and aging rate in turbine generator winding insulations. A series of tests have been performed on two groups of the accelerated aging experiments. The first group of stator windings was aged under hydrogen pressure of 4 atm while the second group of stator windings was aged under air atmosphere. The stator windings aged under air atmosphere suffer from larger partial discharge magnitude with larger voids at high electrical stress than those under hydrogen pressure. The second goal of the experiment is to evaluate the validity of on-line measurement technique which is normally measured under hydrogen environment. The test results show that further experiments are needed to apply the on-line scheme to turbine generator being under high hydrogen pressure.
This paper proposes a reactive current assignment and control strategy for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind-turbine generation system under generic grid voltage sag or swell conditions. The system's active and reactive power constrains during grid faults are investigated with both the grid- and rotor-side convertors (GSC and RSC) maximum ampere limits considered. To meet the latest grid codes, especially the low- and high-voltage ride-through (LVRT and HVRT) requirements, an adaptive reactive current control scheme is investigated. In addition, a torque-oscillation suppression technique is designed to reduce the mechanism stress on turbine systems caused by intensive voltage variations. Simulation and experiment studies demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme to enhance the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of DFIG-based wind turbines during violent changes in grid voltage.
The purpose of this study is not only to evaluate thermal performance but also to find the stress behavior of heat transfer tubes under the part load operation in Heat Recovery Steam Generator. Flow analysis was performed to know the behavior of exhaust gas from gas turbine and thermal performance was calculated using distribution of hot exhaust velocity. In addition, tubes temperature during operation were gathered from actual plant to verify the uneven flow distribution under part load operation. Stress analysis was performed using tubes temperature data gathered from actual plant under both part and full load operations to know the stress behavior of tubes.

A thorough understanding of the transient behavior during start-up is essential in the design and operation of the heat recovery steam generator(HRSG). During this period of time, material that is exposed to high temperature and experiences a large temperature variation is subject to high thermal stress. In this work, a transient formulation of the HRSG is constructed including the estimation of the thermal stress and fatigue of the drum wall. Start-up behavior of a single-pressure HRSG is analyzed and the effect of bypassing part of the gas turbine exhaust flow on the thermal stress evolution is examined. It is found that the modulation of the gas flow rate using a bypass damper is very useful in view of reducing the thermal stress of the drum and ensuring the fatigue lifetime.

Wind is an abundant source of natural energy which can be utilized to generate power. Wind velocity does not remain constant, and as a result the output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) fluctuates. To reduce the fluctuation, different approaches are already being proposed, such as energy storage devices, electric double layer capacitors, flywheels, and so on. These methods are effective but require a significant extra cost to installation and maintenance. This paper proposes to reduce output power fluctuation by controlling kinetic energy of a WTG system. A MW-class pitch-regulated permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is introduced to apply a power fluctuation reducing method. The major advantage of this proposed method is that, an additional energy storage system is not required to control the power fluctuation. Additionally, the proposed method can mitigate shaft stress of a WTG system. Which is reflected in an enhanced reliability of the wind turbine. Moreover, the proposed method can be changed to the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method by adjusting an averaging time. The proposed power smoothing control is compared with the MPPT control method and verified by using the MATLAB SIMULINK environment.

In this paper, an analysis of the joint that transmits power from the blades to the generator is performed using the FEM (finite element method). The mode shapes and natural frequencies were extracted using experimental modal analysis in order to establish the FEM model. Then, the model was verified by comparing the mode shapes and natural frequencies to those obtained from the ANSYS modal analysis. Dynamic stress analysis was performed at the rated and limited wind speeds considering the wind load and gravity.

This paper discusses the electromagnetic and mechanical design considerations to improve the design accuracy and power to mass ratio of multi-stack axial flux permanent magnet synchronous generator (AFPMSG). Design accuracy of multi-stack AFPMSG for direct drive wind turbine application is improved by considering magnetic flux leakages and fringing effect. FEM structural analysis is utilized to increase power to mass ratio of three-stack AFPMSG by reducing the rotor yoke thickness considering magnetic and centrifugal forces and Von Mises stress distribution.

The paper concerns the description of the step by step development process of the new fixed blade runner called "Mixer" suitable for the uprating of the Francis turbines units installed at the older low head hydropower plants. In the paper the details of hydraulic and mechanical design are presented. Since the rotational speed of the new runner is significantly higher then the rotational speed of the original Francis one, the direct coupling of the turbine to the generator can be applied. The maximum efficiency at prescribed operational point was reached by the geometry optimization of two most important components. In the first step the optimization of the draft tube geometry was carried out. The condition for the draft tube geometry optimization was to design the new geometry of the draft tube within the original bad draft tube shape without any extensive civil works. The runner blade geometry optimization was carried out on the runner coupled with the draft tube domain. The blade geometry of the runner was optimized using automatic direct search optimization procedure. The method used for the objective function minimum search is a kind of the Nelder-Mead simplex method. The objective function concerns efficiency, required net head and cavitation features. After successful hydraulic design the modal and stress analysis was carried out on the prototype scale runner. The static pressure distribution from flow simulation was used as a load condition. The modal analysis in air and in water was carried out and the results were compared. The final runner was manufactured in model scale and it is going to be tested in hydraulic laboratory. Since the turbine with the fixed blade runner does not allow double regulation like in case of full Kaplan turbine, it can be profitably used mainly at power plants with smaller changes of operational conditions or in case with more units installed. The advantages are simple manufacturing, installation and therefore lower expenses and short delivery time for turbine uprating.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the foundation structure of a 3.6-MW wind turbine generator (WTG) installed offshore in Western Korea. The ultimate limit state (ULS) and fatigue limit state (FLS) of the multi-pile steel foundation (MSF) installed at the Saemangeum offshore wind farm were structurally investigated using the finite element (FE) software, ANSYS Workbench 19.0. According to the ULS analysis, no plastic deformation was found in any of the components constituting the substructure. At the same time, the maximal stress value reached the calculation limit of 335 MPa. According to the FLS results, the stress concentration factor (SCF) ranged from 1.00 to 1.88 in all components. The results of this study can be applied to determine the optimal design for MSFs.

Filament winding process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. And now it is well established as a versatile method for storage tanks and pipe for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by split disk test fixture and dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values obtained by the rule of mixture. And the purpose of this paper is to suggest an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimens tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than of a ring specimen tested by the split disk test because the stress concentration in edges of s split disk test fixture is more severe than the that of dress disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.
