  • The characteristics of boundary layers have significant effects on the aerodynamic forces and vibration of the wind turbine blade. The incorporation of active trailing edge flaps (ATEF) into wind turbine blades has been proven as an effective control approach for alleviation of load and vibration. This paper is aimed at investigating the effects of external trailing edge flaps on the flow pattern and velocity distribution within a boundary layer of a NREL 5MW reference wind turbine, as well as designing a new type of velocity sensors for future validation measurements. An aeroelastic-aerodynamic simulation with FAST-AeroDyn code was conducted on the entire wind turbine structure and the modifications were made on turbine blade sections with ATEF. The results of aeroelastic-aerodynamic simulations were combined with the results of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulations. From these, the velocity profile of the boundary layer as well as the thickness variation with time under the influence of a simplified load case was calculated for four different blade-flap combinations (without flap, with $-5^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and $+5^{\circ}$ flap). In conjunction with the computational modeling of the characteristics of boundary layers, a bio-inspired hair flow sensor was designed for sensing the boundary flow field surrounding the turbine blades, which ultimately aims to provide real time data to design the control scheme of the flap structure. The sensor element design and performance were analyzed using both theoretical model and finite element method. A prototype sensor element with desired bio-mimicry responses was fabricated and validated, which will be further refined for integration with the turbine blade structures.

  • For the case of high head and critical low flow rate range of micro hydropower resources, it requires very low specific speed turbines which are lower than conventional impulse turbine's specific speed. In order to satisfy the request for very low specific speed turbine with high efficiency, a new positive displacement turbine is developed. The performance characteristics of the new turbine is tested and compared with a conventional impulse turbine, which is used for automatic water faucet system. The purpose of present study is to develop an high performance turbine that can be used to extract micro hydropower potential of a water supply system. The test results show that the positive displacement turbine is much more efficient than the conventional turbine and it can sustain high efficiency under the wide range of operating conditions. The pressure pulsations at the inlet and outlet of the positive displacement turbine can be considerably minimized by using simple pressure damper.

  • Exergy analysis is widely used in energy system analysis for more efficient energy use. Pinch technology has focused on chemical plants, such as pure heat exchanger networks. In this study, the objective is to seek more effective means with integrating above two methods. In order to demonstrate effective result and to prove possibility for pinch analysis, the steam turbine is adopted to make heat recovery in the heat exchanger network. Three cases are introduced using the integration of exergy and pinch analysis. The standard steam turbine utility is the base case, and adding the heat pump to this system is the second case. The third case is the system with the heat pump and minimum utilities. The results show that the output power of steam turbine in the case(2) and case(3) are increased up to 42% and 46%, respectively, compared with that of base case.

  • Measurement uncertainty analysis of fuel flow using turbine flowmeter was performed for the case of altitude engine test. SAE ARP4990 was used as the fuel flow calculation procedure, as well as the mathematical model for the measurement uncertainty assessment. The assessment was performed using Sensitivity Coefficient Method. 11 parameters involved in the calculation of the flow rate were considered. For the given equipment setup, the measurement uncertainty of fuel flow was assessed in the range of 1.19~1.86 % for high flow rate case, and 1.47~3.31 % for low flow rate case. Fluctuation in frequency signal from the flowmeter had the largest influence on the fuel flow measurement uncertainty for most cases. Fuel temperature measurement had the largest for the case of low temperature and low flow rate. Calibration of K-factor and the interpolation of the calibration data also had large influence, especially for the case of very low temperature. Reference temperature, at which the reference viscosity of the sample fuel was measured, had relatively small contribution, but it became larger when the operating fuel temperature was far from reference temperature. Measurement of reference density had small contribution on the flow rate uncertainty. Fuel pressure and atmospheric pressure measurement had virtually no contribution on the flow rate uncertainty.

  • A gas turbine is the main equipment of a power plant that generates electricity by high-speed rotation of the rotor in a high-temperature environment. In particular, in the case of medium to large-sized gas turbines, the rotor is composed of a plurality of stages, and each component is exposed to different physical environments. Especially, in the case of the tip clearance of the turbine, it is a very important factor in the performance of the design items and the operation of the stable turbine, and a design considering the physical behavior of all major parts should be done. In this study, we will discuss the process of visualizing the physical behavior of turbine operating conditions and the method of designing tip clearance for stable operation by using commercial finite element analysis program for gas turbine assembly model and single product.

  • CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analyses that considered the dynamic interaction effects between the flow and a turbine were performed to evaluate the power output characteristics of two representative vertical-axis tidal-current turbines: an H-type Darrieus turbine and Gorlov helical turbine (GHT). For this purpose, a commercial CFD code, Star-CCM+, was utilized, and the power output characteristic were investigated in relation to the scale ratio using the relation between the Reynolds number and the lift-to-drag ratio. It was found that the power coefficients were significantly reduced when the scaled model turbine was used, especially when the Reynolds number was lower than $10^5$. The power output characteristics of GHT in relation to the twisting angle were also investigated using a three-dimensional CFD analysis, and it was found that the power coefficient was maximized for the case of a Darrieus turbine, i.e., a twisting angle of $0^{\circ}$, and the torque pulsation ratio was minimized when the blade covered $360^{\circ}$ for the case of a turbine with a twisting angle of $120^{\circ}$.

  • This paper presents a ride-through skill of PMSG wind turbine system under the distorted and unbalanced grid voltage dips. When voltage dips occur in the grid, pitch control and generator speed control as well as a parallel resistor of DC-link help to keep the turbine's safety. Modern grid code requires a wind turbine to supply reactive currents to help voltage recovery after grid faults clearance. In order to supply reactive currents to the grid in case of the distortedly unbalanced grid voltage dips, a special PLL is needed to control the grid side converter and to regulate the grid voltages symmetrically. The proposed method is applied to 2MW multi-pole PMSG wind turbine system, and verified by simulation.

  • The vibration of a LP turbine casing may cause the problems of power generation and the life of its facility. In this study, we carried out on-site measurements of a LP Turbine in order to find the cause of the vibration and conducted experimental and numerical modal analysis of the turbine with its support frame. The measurement and the modal analysis show that the natural frequency of the turbine becomes close to 60 Hz due to the subsidence of the support. The elimination of the subsidence by shimming between the turbine and the support frame gave rise to the reduction of the vibration of the LP turbine case.

  • Counter Rotating Turbine (CRT) is an axial turbine with a nozzle followed by a rotor and another rotor that rotates in the opposite direction of the first one. Axial spacing between blade rows plays major role in its performance. Present work involves computationally studying the performance and flow field of CRT with axial spacing of 10, 30 and 70% for different mass flow rates. The turbine components are modeled for all the three spacing. Velocity, pressure, entropy and Mach number distributions across turbine stage are analyzed. Effect of spacing on losses and performance in case of stage, Rotor1 and Rotor2 are elaborated. Results confirm that an optimum axial spacing between turbine components can be obtained for the improved performance of CRT.
