This paper deals with analytical methods for estimating the optimal design parameters of wind turbine from power output curve. Asmussen [5] has been used a linearized power output curve for an analytical expression for the specific output of wind turbine generators, but a nonlinear power output curve is developed to determine the design parameters of optimal wind turbine in this study that has maximum specific output and minimum swept area. Thus, the design results of this research will yield reliabilities in construction of wind turbine system and detailed results are presented for several district in Korea. Although the results presented pertain to a wind turbine system without storage, the design approach is equally applicable to system with storage.

There has been considerable interest recently in the topic of renewable energy. This is primarily due to concerns about environmental impacts. Moreover, fluctuating and rising oil prices, increases in demand, supply uncertainties and other factors have led to increased calls for alternative energy sources. Small hydropower, especially using water supply system, attracts high attentions because of relatively lower cost and smaller space requirements to construct the plant. Moreover. newly developed positive displacement turbine has high acceptability for the system. Therefore, the purpose of this study is focused on the examination of the performance characteristics and proposition of a optimum design method of the turbine for the improvement of the performance. The results show that newly proposed optimum design method for the turbine has high accuracy of performance prediction and good applicability for the performance improvement of the turbine.

Design performances of various configurations of hybrid systems combining an atmospheric pressure molten carbonate fuel cell and a gas turbine have been analyzed. Two different fuel reforming methods (internal and external reforming) were considered. Influences of turbine inflow heating method, location of fuel combustor and associated component arrangements were investigated. In general, internal reforming leads to higher system efficiencies. The optimum design pressure ratio varies among different system configurations. In particular, the design point selection is closely related to the allowable turbine inlet temperature. Configurations with direct heating of turbine inlet flow may realize both higher efficiency and higher specific power than those with indirect heating.

Gas turbine technology has steadily advanced since its inception and continues to evolve. Development is active in producing both smaller gas turbines and more powerful and efficient engines. However, it is shown that our state-of-the-art technologies for gas turbine developments remain at a basic level by comparisons with advanced technology countries. This paper shows that development process and preliminary design tools for gas turbine combustor were introduced as a first results of source technology secure researches for the gas turbine combustors.

Recently, various methods have been developed to improve the performance of gas turbines for combined cycle power plants. This paper especially focused on the gas turbine with a reheat process. The purpose of this study is to analyze performance characteristics of a reheat-cycle gas turbine on both a design point and off-design operations. Results of the parametric study of this model show how operating and design parameters influence on the performance of the gas turbine. Moreover, possibilities for the analysis of off-design performance based on a self-generated compressor performance characteristic map are presented.
As the need for clean coal technology has grown, so has the global research and development efforts into integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants. An IGCC plant couples a gas turbine to a gasification block. Various technical and economic problems exist in designing such a system. One such problem is the difficulty in realizing economies of scale because the single-train flow capacity of commercial IGCC synthetic gas turbine plants is limited; the capacity does not exceed a net power rating of 300 MW. To address this problem, this study modeled and simulated a synthetic gas turbine with the goal of evaluating the feasibility of a 500 MW or larger IGCC plant. First, a gas turbine with the best output and efficiency was chosen for use with natural gas. The turbine was modeled using GateCycle (a simulation tool), and the integrity of the model validated by comparing the result to the design value. Next, off-design modeling was carried out for a gas turbine with synthetic gas based on its on-design model, and the result was compared with the study result of the gas turbine manufacturer. The simulation confirmed that it is possible to create a large capacity IGCC plant by undertaking the remodeling of a gas turbine designed to use natural gas into one suitable for synthetic gas.

This paper describes the application of a novel virtual prototyping methodology to wind turbine blade design. Numeric modelling data and experimental data about turbine blade geometry and structural/dynamical behaviour are combined to obtain an affordable digital twin model useful in reducing the undesirable uncertainties during the entire turbine lifecycle. Moreover, this model can be used to track and predict blade structural changes, due for example to structural damage, and to assess its remaining life. A new interactive and recursive process is proposed. It includes CAD geometry generation and finite element analyses, combined with experimental data gathered from the structural testing of a new generation wind turbine blade. The goal of the research is to show how the unique features of a complex wind turbine blade are considered in the virtual model updating process, fully exploiting the computational capabilities available to the designer in modern engineering. A composite Sandia National Laboratories Blade System Design Study (BSDS) turbine blade is used to exemplify the proposed process. Static, modal and fatigue experimental testing are conducted at Clarkson University Blade Test Facility. A digital model was created and updated to conform to all the information available from experimental testing. When an updated virtual digital model is available the performance of the blade during operation can be assessed with higher confidence.

Design performance of hybrid power generation systems, comprised of a gas turbine and an atmospheric pressure molten carbonate fuel cell, has been analyzed. Two different configurations were analyzed and performances were compared. A reference calculation was performed for the design condition of a system under development and simulated results agreed well with the published data. Performances were analyzed in terms of main design parameters including turbine inlet temperature, operating temperature of the fuel cell and pressure ratio. Also examined were the effects of fuel utilization factor and heat exchanger effectiveness. It was found that the relationship between the turbine inlet temperature and the fuel cell temperature should be critically examined to evaluate achievable design performance. Considering current state of the art technologies, a system with the combustor located before the turbine could achieve higher efficiency and specific power than the other system with the combustor located after the turbine.
This paper aims to develop a submerged propeller turbine for micro hydropower plant which allows to sustain high values of efficiency in a broad range of hydrological conditions (H=2~6 m, $Q=0.15{\sim}0.39m^3/s$). The two aspects to be considered in this development are mechanical simplicity and high-efficiency operation. Unlike conventional turbines that have spiral casing and gear box, this is directing driving and no spiral casing. A 10 kW class turbine which has the most high potential of the power generation has been developed. The most important element in the design of turbine is the runner blade. The initial blade is designed using inverse design method and then the runner geometry is modified by classical hydraulic method. The design process is carried out in two steps. First, the blade shape is fix and then other components of submerged propeller turbine are designed. Computational fluid dynamics analyses based on the Navier-Stokes equations have been used to obtain overall performance data for the blade and the full turbine, respectively. The results generated by performance parameters(head, guide vane opening angle and rotational speed) variations are theoretically analysed. The evaluation criteria for the blade and the turbine performances are the pressure distribution and flow's behavior on the runner blades and turbine. The results of simulation reveals an efficiency of 91.5% and power generation of 10.5kW at the best efficiency point at the head of 4m and a discharge of $0.3m^3/s$.
The aim of this paper is to suggest a design method of the model following optimal boiler-turbine H.inf. control system using genetic algorithm. This boiler-turbine H.inf. control system is designed by applying genetic algortihm with reference model to the optimal determination of weighting functions and design parameter .gamma. that are given by Glover-Doyle algornithm whch can design H.inf. contrlaaer in the sate. space. The first method to do this is ghat the gains of weightinf functions and .gamma. are optimized simultaneously by genetic algroithm. And the second method is that not only the gains and .gamma. but also the dynamics of weighting functions are optimized at the same time by genetic algonithm. The effectiveness of this boiler-turbine H.inf. control system is verified and compared with LQG/LTR control system by computer simulation.
