In this paper, we address the question of dynamic network provisioning for time-varying traffic rates, with the objective of maximizing the system throughput. We assume that the network is capable of providing bandwidth guaranteed traffic tunnels for an ingress-egress pair and present an approach that (1) updates the tunnel routes and (2) adjusts the tunnel bandwidths, in an incremental, adaptive manner, based on the variations in the incoming traffic. First, we consider a simpler scenario where tunnel routes are fixed, and present an approach for adjusting the tunnel bandwidths dynamically. We show, through simulations, that our dynamic bandwidth assignment algorithm significantly outperforms the optimal static bandwidth provisioning policy, and yields a performance close to that of the optimal dynamic bandwidth provisioning policy. We also propose an adaptive route update algorithm, which can be used in conjunction with our dynamic bandwidth assignment policy, and leads to further improvement in the overall system performance.
While the Internet keeps its permeation into every aspect of human life, two things stand out. One is the requirement for high quality of services to support multimedia data service.'The other is the desire for ubiquitous network connection. Combining the two things makes the Internet possible in supporting multimedia communications for nomadic users on the locomotion. To support QoS communication for mobile users by applying RSVP to Mobile IP, RSVP Tunnel, which specifies building separately a RSVP session between the home agent and the foreign agent, was proposed. However, the RSVP Tunnel method breeds bandwidth overhead and association problems in tunnel because of duplicated RSVP messages use. To resolve these problems, in this paper, we propose the new encapsulation method, the RSVP-in-IP Encapsulation (RIPE) that can support QoS guaranteed service efficicntly in Mobile IP networks. The proposed method supports RSVP mobility to Mobile If tunneling mechanism efficiently without any additional session as the RSVP Tunnel scheme. Moreover it removes the critical problems of bandwidth overhead in a tunnel and association by duplicated messages. We compared the performance of our proposed scheme with RSVP Tunnel scheme in term of mean delay, mean data rate and bandwidth overhead in tunnel.
When tunnel is excavated via drilling and blasting, the excessive overbreak is the primary cause of personal or equipment safety hazards and increasing the cost of the tunnel operation owing to additional ground supports such as shotcrete. The practical management of overbreak is extremely difficult due to the complex causative mechanism of it. The study examines the relationship between rock mass characteristics (unsupported face condition, uniaxial compressive strength, face weathering and alteration, discontinuities- frequency, condition and angle between discontinuities and tunnel contour) and the depth of overbreak through using feed-forward artificial neuron networks. Then, Overbreak Resistance Factor (ORF) has been developed based on the weights of rock mass parameters to the overbreak phenomenon. Also, a new concept of tunnel overbreak management system using ORF has been suggested.
In general, the cost of transceiver for wireless network configuration is more expensive than that for wired network. However, in case of environmental management system in a tunnel, the cost can be minimized by adopting low rate tranceiver because the amount of the exchanged data for tunnel monitoring is very small. When the obtained data from sensor node is sent directly to the corresponding command node, there is no need to consider routing problem of the data transfer. However in this case, sensor nodes are required to be implemented with high power transmitter and experience high energy consumption. To tackle this problem, relay nodes can be used to transfer the data of tunnel monitoring, and suitable routing protocols for selecting optimum path are needed. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a routing algorithm and a self-configuration protocol for environment management system in tunnel.
Two identical tall building models with square cross-sections are experimentally studied in a wind tunnel with high-frequency-force-balance (HFFB) technique to investigate the interference effects on wind loads and dynamic responses of the interfered building. Another wind tunnel test, in which the interfered model is an aeroelastic one, is also carried out to further study the interference effects. The results from the two kinds of tests are compared with each other. Then the influences of turbulence in oncoming wind on dynamic interference factors are analyzed. At last the artificial neural networks method is used to deal with the experimental data and the along-wind and across-wind dynamic interference factor $IF_{dx}$ & $IF_{dy}$ contour maps are obtained, which could be used as references for wind load codes of buildings.

This paper concerns the development of a knowledge-based tunnel design system within the framework of artificial neural networks (ANNs). The system is aimed at expediting a routine tunnel design works such as determination of support patterns and stability analysis of selected support patterns. A number of sub-modules for determination of support patterns and stability assessment were developed and implemented to the system. It is shown that the ANNs trained with the results of 2D and 3D numerical analyses can be generalized with a reasonable accuracy, and that the ANN based tunnel design concept is a robust tool for tunnel design optimization. The details of the system architecture and the ANNs development are discussed in this paper.

The development of multimedia applications has followed the development of high-speed networks. By improving the performance of mobile devices, it is possible to provide high-transfer-speed broadband and seamless mobile multicasting services between indoor and outdoor environments. Multicasting services support efficient group communications. However, mobile multicasting services have two constraints: tunnel convergence and handoff latency. In order to solve these problems, many protocols and handoff methods have been studied. In this paper, we propose inter local mobility anchor (inter-LMA) optimized handoff model for mobile multicasting services in proxy mobility IPv6 based (PMIPv6-based) networks. The proposed model removes the tunnel convergence issue and reduces the router processing costs. Further, it the proposed model allows for the execution of fast handoff operations with adaptive transmission mechanisms. In addition, the proposed scheme exhibits low packet delivery costs and handoff latency in comparison with existing schemes and ensures fast handoff when moving the inter-LMA domain.
The Mobile IPv6(MIPv6) has a well-known time gap of packet loss between link down and binding update. To minimize such packet loss, this paper proposes a MIPv6-based dual tunneling mechanism, which keeps exploiting the old tunnel while creating a new tunnel. Superiority of the proposed mechanism is evaluated by quantitative analysis on the lost packets and computer simulation, based on two overlay heterogeneous access networks, such as the UMTS and a WLAN.

The uplink capacity and the interference statistics of the sectors of the cigar-shaped W-CDMA microcells are studied. A model of 9 base station, assumed to be in a long tunnel, is used for the uplink analysis. The capacity and the interference statistics of the microcells are studied for different sector ranges, different propagation exponents, different antenna sidelobe levels, and different bend losses.
By providing ubiquitous Internet connectivity, wireless networks offer more convenient ways for users to surf the Internet. However, wireless networks encounter more technological challenges than wired networks, such as bandwidth, security problems, and handoff latency. Thus, this paper proposes new technologies to solve these problems. First, a Security Access Gateway (SAG) is proposed to solve the security issue. Originally, mobile terminals were unable to process high security calculations because of their low calculating power. SAG not only offers high calculating power to encrypt the encryption demand of SAG's domain, but also helps mobile terminals to establish a multiple safety tunnel to maintain a secure domain. Second, Robust Header Compression (RoHC) technology is adopted to increase the utilization of bandwidth. Instead of Access Point (AP), Access Gateway (AG) is used to deal with the packet header compression and de-compression from the wireless end. AG's high calculating power is able to reduce the load on AP. In the original architecture, AP has to deal with a large number of demands by header compression/de-compression from mobile terminals. Eventually, wireless networks must offer users "Mobility" and "Roaming". For wireless networks to achieve "Mobility" and "Roaming," we can use Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) technology. Nevertheless, such technology might cause latency. Furthermore, how the security tunnel and header compression established before the handoff can be used by mobile terminals handoff will be another great challenge. Thus, this paper proposes to solve the problem by using Early Binding Updates (EBU) and Security Access Gateway (SAG) to offer a complete mechanism with low latency, low handoff mechanism calculation, and high security.
