  • A tunnel deformation monitoring system is developed with the use of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technique, aiming at providing continuous monitoring of railway tunnel deformation in the long term, and early warning for the rail service maintainers and authorities to avoid catastrophic consequences when significant deformation occurs. Specifically, a set of FBG bending gauges with the ability of angle measurement and temperature compensation is designed and manufactured for the purpose of online monitoring of tunnel deformation. An overall profile of lateral tunnel displacement along the longitudinal direction can be obtained by implementing an array of the FBG bending gauges interconnected by rigid rods, in conjunction with a proper algorithm. The devised system is verified in laboratory experiments with a test setup enabling to imitate various patterns of tunnel deformation before the implementation of this system in an in-service high-speed railway (HSR) tunnel.

Method: We investigate and analyze the problems of various items on maintenance monitoring of tunnel structure of 14 subway lines of Seoul subway in downtown area. Result: The maintenance monitoring items, measurement quantity and installation location are classified into open tunnel and excavation tunnel and improvement plans are suggested respectively. Various durability criteria of the measuring instruments were examined, and durability confirmation method suggested improvement measures such as approval, inspection, inspection and testing, calibration of monitoring sensors. Conclusion: Applying the improvement measures of the tunnel structure maintenance monitoring to the construction site will increase the efficiency of the maintenance monitoring and contribute to the development of construction monitoring technology.

  • An investigation of tunnel linings is performed at two tunnels in the US using complimentary noncontact techniques: air-coupled ground penetrating radar (GPR), and a vehicle-mounted scanning system (SPACETEC) that combines laser, visual, and infrared thermography scanning methods. This paper shows that a combination of such techniques can maximize inspection coverage in a comprehensive and efficient manner. Since ground-truth is typically not available in public tunnel field evaluations, the noncontact techniques used are compared with two reliable in-depth contact nondestructive testing methods: ground-coupled GPR and ultrasonic tomography. The noncontact techniques are used to identify and locate the reinforcement mesh, structural steel ribs, internal layer interfaces, shallow delamination, and tile debonding. It is shown that this combination of methods can be used synergistically to provide tunnel owners with a comprehensive and efficient approach for monitoring tunnel lining conditions.

  • This paper is a follow-up paper to the publication, "Development of Tunnel-Environment Monitoring System and Its Installation I - Monitoring System and Measurement in Subway Tunnel" [1]. An environment monitoring system was installed in the 20.3-km-long Gumjung tunnel, which has the general structure of a high-speed double-track railway tunnel. Data were collected for approximately one year. Monthly and daily data were obtained and analyzed for the temperature and relative humidity in summer and winter months. This paper discusses the environmental characteristics at different positions in the tunnel. The results are expected to be widely used in studies on tunnel ventilation and the improvement of air quality and thermal environments.

  • In this study, research was performed to establish the measurement and frequency of analysis for maintenance monitoring by investigation of tunnel maintenance monitoring system in the tunnel which was installed in the Seoul metro line 5, 7 and 8, using that the domestic and foreign application case, results of analyzed maintenance monitoring in the domestic tunnel and legal safety management standard of the facility. The results of the monitoring management about analysis frequency to the present are considered that the problem about measuring frequency does not occur. According to the analysis results of the maintenance monitoring which are located on the 5, 6th subway line, they are analyzed that the stress of concrete lining and reinforced bar are converged gradually after 45 months. Therefore Monitoring of measurement and analysis frequency is conduct more often within about 4 years after the measuring instrument installation. Four years later, slowing the frequency of measurement is considered reasonable.

  • Resistivity tomography is very effective geophysical method to find out the resistivity distribution and its change in time around a tunnel. Thus, the resistivity tomogram can provide helpful information which is necessary for the effective maintenance of the tunnel. However, an air filled tunnel severely distorts tomography data, especially when the current or potential electrode is placed near the tunnel. Moreover, the distortion can often lead to misinterpretation of tomography monitoring data. To solve these problem, we developed a resistivity modeling and time-lapse inversion program which include a tunnel. In this study, using the developed program we assured that the inversion including a tunnel gives much more accurate image around a tunnel, compared with the conventional tomogram where the tunnel is not included. We also confirmed that the time-lapse inversion of resistivity monitoring data defines well resistivity changed areas around a tunnel in time.

  • This technical paper is a study on the unique displacements of Shotcrete Lining at the mined tunnel during excavation period through deep consideration with real time data from monitoring instrumentations correlation with the numerical analysis to identify the rock stresses and the rock spring points at the working face of the Conventional tunnelling by the Drill and Blast, based on the geological face mapping results of the project NS2, Transmission cable tunnel project in Singapore. The created geometry of numerical model was prepared to the real mined tunnel construction site including, vertical shaft, construction adit, tunnel junction area, and 2 enlargement caverns. The convergence measurements by the monitoring instrumentation were performed during the tunnel excavation and shaft sinking construction stages to guarantee the safety of complicated underground structures.

  • In this study, the total loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring which is installed and operated in the domestic and foreign tunnel structure is researched and analyzed for estimating the loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring sensor of subway tunnel. The total loss and damage ratio at the elapsed time of 5-6 years after installation is 14.2% in the Seoul metro line no.5,6 and 7, 14.8% in the section 1 of the Seoul metro line no.9, 13.9% in the Channel tunnel of England and all of them are close to 15%. Therefore, it is reasonable to reflect that the total loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring sensor of subway tunnel is estimated provisionally 15% on design, and hence the study of the loss and damage ratio with the number of elapsed years in long-term by the measurement category will be needed.
