  • The characteristics of wake galloping phenomenon for two parallel/unparallel circular cylinders were investigated via wind tunnel tests. The two cylinders were initially deployed in parallel and wake galloping phenomena were observed by varying the center-to-center distance. The effect of an unparallel arrangement of two cylinders was next investigated by fixing the spacing ratio of one side of the cylinders at 5.0D and the other side at 3.0D, in which D represents the diameter of the cylinder. For the unparallel disposition, the 5.0D side showed a small, limited vibration while the 3.0D side produced much larger amplitude of vibration, resulting in a rolling motion. However, the overall amplitude appeared to decrease in unparallel disposition when compared with the amplitude of the 3.0D - 3.0D parallel case. This represents the mitigation effect of wake galloping due to the unparallel disposition between two cylinders. Flow visualization tests with particle image velocimetry were conducted to identify flow fields between two cylinders. The test results demonstrate the existence of a complex interaction of the downstream cylinder with the shear layer generated by the upstream cylinder. When the spacing ratio was large enough, the shear layer was not observed and the downstream cylinder showed only limited random vibration.

  • Effect of boundary layer thickness on the flow characteristics around a rectangular prism has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Three different boundary layers(thick, medium and thin)were generated in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at Pusan National University. The thick boundary layer having 670mm thickness was generated by using spires and roughness elements. The medium thickness of boundary layer$(\delta=270mm)$ was the natural turbulent boundary layer at the test section with fully long developing length(18m). The thin boundary layer with 36.5mm thickness was generated by on a smooth panel elevated 70cm from the wind tunnel floor. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was $7.9{\times}10^3$. The mean velocity vector fields and turbulent kinetic energy distribution were measured and compared. The effect of boundary layer thickness is clearly observed not only in the length of separation bubble but also in the reattachment points. The thinner boundary layer thickness, the higher turbulent kinetic energy peak around the model roof. It is strongly recommended that the height ratio between model and approaching boundary layer thickness should be a major parameter.

  • This paper presents the fabrication method of a micro-riblet film (MRF) using MEMS technology and the experimental results of the drag reduction of an airfoil with MRFs. Riblets having grooved surface in the streamwise direction has been proven as an effective passive control technique of the drag reduction. A V-grooved pattern on (100) silicon wafer is etched with anisotropic bulk micromachining. The MRF is completed by replicating the V-grooved pattern with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Experiments were performed by measuring a velocity field behind the trailing edge of a NACA 0012 airfoil with and without MRFs in a closed-type subsonic wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PlV) technique. The MRF provides about 3.8 % drag reduction compared to the drag on a smooth airfoil when the freestream velocity of wind tunnel is 3.3 m/s.

  • Recently, the use of image analysis methods and commercial equipments has been extensively increased in the field of rock engineering. However the problem of errors involved in the image acquisition and subsequent analysis procedure has been frequently neglected. In addition there has been few studies dealing with this problem. So proper color calibration method is needed to be developed for the objectivity and improvement of reliability on image analysis of rock. Color calibration method using standard color rendition chart was adopted on this study. Color calibration and error analysis were carried out for the image acquired from granite rock samples. As a result, comparison among other rock images and improvement of reliability on whole analysis were possible.

  • A crack is the main cause to affect the integrity of tunnel lining as well as leakage, spalling, exposed rebar, corrosion, carbonation and so on. Since the 1980, NATM has prevailed on excavation method and geotechnical philosophy in tunnel. Although the pattern of cracks has been reported by several engineers' effort, it was only focused on longitudinal cracks of lining. Eleven operational NATM tunnels have been conducted with the precise inspection for safety and diagnosis by KISTEC (Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Incorporation). With those results, the crack patterns by the spatial distribution and appearance for each tunnel have been analyzed and the cause of occurrence for seven common types of cracks in NATM tunnels was classified. Additionally, the longitudinal crack on lining above duct slab was figured out by numerical simulation and field inspection. Each crack has been analyzed by CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) scanner image with 3D configuration. Each type of cracks is also explained with output of experimental and condition of construction. Defined cracks on NATM tunnels will be good example for periodical inspection and precise inspection for safety and diagnosis.

  • Since the direct and indirect damage caused by the fire in the underground utility tunnel will cause great damage to society as a whole, it is necessary to make efforts to prevent and control it in advance. The most of the fires that occur in cables are caused by short circuits, earth leakage, ignition due to over-current, overheating of conductor connections, and ignition due to sparks caused by breakdown of insulators. In order to find the cause of fire at an early stage due to the characteristics of the underground utility tunnel and to prevent disasters and safety accidents, we are constantly managing it with a detection system using image analysis and making efforts. Among them, a case of developing a fire detection system using CCTV-based deep learning image analysis technology has been reported. However, CCTV needs to be supplemented because there are blind spots. Therefore, we would like to develop a high-performance acoustic-based deep learning model that can prevent fire by detecting the spark sound before spark occurs. In this study, we propose a method that can collect sound in underground utility tunnel environments using microphone sensor through development and experiment of prototype module. After arranging an acoustic sensor in the underground utility tunnel with a lot of condensation, it verifies whether data can be collected in real time without malfunction.

  • This paper presents a new approach for the automatic mapping of discontinuities in a tunnel face based on its 3D digital model reconstructed by LiDAR scan or photogrammetry techniques. The main idea revolves around the identification of discontinuity areas in the 3D digital model of a tunnel face by segmenting its 2D projected images using a deep-learning semantic segmentation model called U-Net. The proposed deep learning model integrates various features including the projected RGB image, depth map image, and local surface properties-based images i.e., normal vector and curvature images to effectively segment areas of discontinuity in the images. Subsequently, the segmentation results are projected back onto the 3D model using depth maps and projection matrices to obtain an accurate representation of the location and extent of discontinuities within the 3D space. The performance of the segmentation model is evaluated by comparing the segmented results with their corresponding ground truths, which demonstrates the high accuracy of segmentation results with the intersection-over-union metric of approximately 0.8. Despite still being limited in training data, this method exhibits promising potential to address the limitations of conventional approaches, which only rely on normal vectors and unsupervised machine learning algorithms for grouping points in the 3D model into distinct sets of discontinuities.

  • It is a Known fact that driving through long tunnel increases possibility of traffic accident because of psychological feeling of insecurity and dispersion of drivers' concentration since driving in narrow and limited space for a longtime. It, therefore, results in raising transportation and environment problems, such as traffic accident difficult to be properly dealt with and ventilation. This study aims at proposing a method of augmenting driving amenity by improving the internal lighting facilities in the tunnel. The study is conducted by investigating internal landscapes of tunnels by lighting colors, which are currently being operated. The Color Planning System (CPS), developed by SHARP Co. Ltd, is exploited for selecting adjective that express the sensitivity image on lighting colors. The CPS is an example that applies to sensitivity of human body for products design development. The CPS takes the following process to define the color : 1) expressing "Pvoduct's Image" as "A Word (adjective)" and 2) referring "A Word" to "Image Scale", and 3) determining the color through this "Image Panel". The study is processed by making a questionnaire using the semantic differential (SD) scale, grasping the consciousness structure of experimental persons through the Factor Analysis, and building a model in which dependent variable is "Degree of Preference" about internal landscape in tunnel using LISREL(LInear Structural RELations).

  • The investigation of the fragmentation of blasted rocks is particularly important because it is a measure of the blast efficiency. The degree of fragmentation has a major effect on the efficiency of the loading and crushing operations. Getting such an information on the large pile of blasted rock is not an easy operation. This paper presents the results of case study to evaluate the performance of two types of tunnel blasting: V-cut and burn cut. The digital images of muckpiles were analyzed to produce size distribution and it was compared with those of predictive equations.
