An Experimental Study for the Hydraulic Behavior of Artificial Rock Joint under Compression and Shear Loading (압축과 전단 하중을 받는 인공 암석 절리의 수리적 거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Cyclic shear test system, which is capable of measuring flow rate inside rock joint, was established to investigate the hydraulic behavior of rough rock joints under various loading conditions. Laboratory hydraulic tests during compression and shear were conducted for artificial rough rock joints. Prior to tests, aperture characteristics of specimens were examined by measuring surface topography. Permeability changes under compression were well approximated with several hydraulic model. Hydraulic behavior conformed to dilation characteristics in the first stage, and permeability increased with increase of dilation. As the shear displacement progressed, flow rate became somewhat constant due to gouge production and offset of apertures. Hydraulic behavior under cyclic shear loading was also influenced by the degradation of asperities and gouge production. In addition. the relation between hydraulic aperture and mechanical aperture under compression and shear loading was investigated and compared.

  • Gangway bellows in this study is the double wrinkled neoprene rubber component to accept various deviations between the carriage end parts of the articulated type high speed railway vehicle(HSRV). The fatigue failure of the bellows has a harmful effect on the riding comfort for the passengers with the increase of noise and ringing in the ears due to air-tightness failure during pass through a long tunnel. In this study, to assure the safety of gangway bellows of the HSRV, non-linear analysis of the gangway bellows considering triaxial angular displacement(rolling /yawing/pitching) between the carriage end parts are performed. The non-linear properties of the rubber are determined by uniaxial tension and equi-biaxial tension test. Moreover, from the results of non-linear analysis, the effects of the angular displacements and frictional coefficients are evaluated.

Influence of the Geometry of Guide Groove on Stress Corrosion Index of Rock in Double Torsion Test (이중 비틀림 시험에서 유도 홈의 형상이 암석의 응력부식지수에 미치는 영향)

  • Double torsion (DT) tests were carried out to investigate the influence of the geometry of guide groove on stress corrosion index of Kumamoto andesite. The fracture toughness was measured in the constant displacement rate, which was set to 2.07 MN/m$^{3}$2/ in average regardless of crack velocity. Stress corrosion indices, n were evaluated using specimens with rectangular, circular and triangular grooves and were 37, 36 and 38 in average, respectively. The n values were constant regardless of the groove geometry, however the DT specimen with triangular groove geometry showed the largest standard deviation in the relationship between crack velocity and stress intensity factor. The DT test was found to be effective in using a rectangular-grooved specimen and the width of the groove must be greater than the average grain size of minerals.

Effect of Degradation of Rock Mass Properties Caused by Water Pressure on the Stability of Mine Gallery (수압에 의한 암반의 물성 저하가 갱도의 안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Mine closure does often accompany the flooding of mine galleries due to ceasing a pumping operation. When a mine gallery is flooded, rocks around the gallery are fully saturated and the gallery is subject to a water pressure. The uniaxial unconfined compressive strength of a rock depends on its water content and decreases as the water content increases. A water pressure may originate the crack growth of a rock or the discontinuity growth of rock mass. Although the water in a gallery will give some support pressure inside the gallery, the degradation of rock mass properties caused by a water pressure will reduce the stability of the gallery. In this study, 2-dimensional discontinuous and 3-dimensional continuous numerical analyses have been conducted to evaluate an effect that a reduction of rock mass properties around the gallery induced by a water pressure has on the stability of mine gallery. The numerical analyses show that a reduction of rock mass properties caused by a water pressure increases displacements of rock mass around mine gallery. 2-dimensional model is found to give larger values of displacement than 3-dimensional model.

Load Bearing Capacity Evaluation of New Lattice Girder by Laboratory Test Techniques (실내평가기법에 의한 새로운 격자지보재의 하중지지력 평가)

  • Load bearing capacity of new lattice girder has been evaluated with optimized spider for lattice girder utilized in the construction of tunnels. This newly developed lattice girder is different from existing lattice girder as its design is associated with existing spider with newly developed 2 types of form. The spacing of lattice girder's spider is linked with the weight and it decides the unit cost and construction therefore, different spacing of the developed spider has been produced to evaluate the measurement of load bearing capacity. As the result of the tests by producing the spacing of spider as 0cm and 4cm for developed lattice girder-2, the load bearing capacity of 0cm with spacing of 21%, and 4cm with 25% of increase when they are compared with the existing lattice girder, and the weight of specimen was decreased. As the result of the tests by producing the spacing of 1cm and 6cm for developed lattice girder-3, the spacing of 1cm with 42%, and the spacing of 6cm with 11% of increase which presented higher load bearing capacity in all newly developed forms, and there was a certain degree of increase in weight in case of 1cm of spacing. The result of evaluation regarding on the displacement by applying the evaluation method suggested by the German Railroad administration, the entire specimens were found to satisfy all the evaluation standard suggested by the administration.

  • In this study, the vibration control performance of high-rise building structures connected by a sky-bridge has been investigated. The philosophy of vibration control using sky-bridges is to allow structures with different dynamic characteristics to exert control forces upon one another through sky-bridges to reduce the overall responses of the system. The the high-rise building structure connected by sky-bridge with 49 and 42 stories was used in this study to investigate the displacement, acceleration, reaction of bearings and stress of sky-bridge by analytical methods. To this end, historical earthquakes, an artificial earthquake and wind force time histories obtained from wind tunnel tests were used. Based on the analytial results, the use of sky-bridge can be effective in reducing the structural responses of high-rise buildings against wind and seismic loads.

A Numerical Analysis on the Shear and Hydraulic behavior of Single Rock Joint with Roughness (거칠기를 고려한 단일 절리의 전단, 수리적 거동에 대한 수치해석)

  • The development of proper joint model, which can describe real phenomena exactly and still can be used easily, is one of the most important element for the analysis of the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of discontinuous rock mass. In this study, an elasto-plastic constitutive model of joint behavior considering asperity degradation was extended with the concept of first and second order asperities. The proposed model was implemented to numerical code with discrete finite joint element. The parametric study with the various asperity angles and degradation coefficients showed that the model can reproduce the shear behavior of typical rough joints well. Results of laboratory monotonic and cyclic shear tests were compared with those of numerical tests to validate the model. The hydraulic model considering the relations between gouge production and aperture was introduced to the mechanical mode1. In an attempt to examine the performance of the model, comparative numerical test was conducted. Permeability between joint surfaces increased rapidly at the first stage, but became nearly constant with increasing shear displacement due to gouge production and uniform variation of aperture distribution.

Three-dimensional Stability Analysis of A Large Underground Hall in Mined Area (채굴적 주변 대형 지하광장의 3차원 안정성해석)

  • Numerical analysis using FLAC3D has been conducted to estimate the stability of a large underground hall that is to be excavated in a mined area and constructed as an unit of a resort park. Numerical modelling is divided into two stages. The first stage is related to the analysis of the mechanical stability of the hall itself and the second to that of the influence of an adjacent mined cavity upon the hall. In the first stage, the stability of the hall is judged from the interpretation of numerical results in three respects: convergence of the unbalanced force of the model, occurrence of plastic zones and distribution of the displacement. In the second stage, variation of the stress state around the underground hall due to the existence of the cavity is compared to that in the case of the absence of the cavity. Through these analyses, it could be known that the large underground hall is not exposed to any mechanical problems and also not affected by the adjacent cavity.

  • The concrete plug in an underground cavern prevents the stored product (oil, gas, etc) from leaking and the excessive inflow of underground water, so it plays an important role in construction and operation of the storage cavern. Additionally, it should maintain its stability under every possible loading condition. Once the plug is constructed, the cavern is isolated from the external access. Therefore, mechanical and hydraulic consideration should be made in construction to fulfill its function. Therefore, in this study, numerical analyses were conducted to study the optimal shape and thickness of the plug with respect to the various conditions of installation depth, the shape of the plug, in-situ stress ratio (K), the condition of rock-plug interface, and the effect of Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ). This paper also presents the effect of slot depth on the hydraulic behavior of the plug. These analyses were carried out by using the 2-dimensional finite difference code, rm FLAC, and the 3D code, rm FLAC$\^$3D/.

Evaluation of Train Running Safety for Direct Fixation Concrete Track on Light Rapid Transit (경전철 직결식 콘크리트 궤도구조의 열차주행안전성 평가)

  • The coefficient of derailment and the rate of wheel load reduction were used as the index of train running safety that was directly affected the train derailment safety. In aspects of track, the train running safety depends on the complex interaction between wheel and rail, and the track-vehicle conditions (i.e., the curvature, cant, track system, vehicle speed and the operation conditions, etc). In this study, the relationship between the train running safety and the track curvature and vehicle speed for direct fixation concrete tracks currently employed in Korean light rapid transit was assessed by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along the service lines. The measured dynamic wheel load, lateral wheel load and lateral displacement of rail head were measured for same train running on four tested tracks under real conditions, which included curved and tangent tracks placed on the tunnel and bridge, thus increasing the train speed by approximately maximum design speed of each test site. Therefore, the measured dynamic track response was applied to the running safety analysis in order to evaluate the coefficient of derailment, the rate of wheel load reduction and the track gauge widening at each test site, and compare with the corresponding Korean train running safety standard. As the results, the lateral track response of direct fixation concrete track appeared to increase with the decreased track curvature; therefore, it was inferred that the track curvature directly affected the train running safety.
