The needle electrode is inserted into the cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) which is the ultra high voltage cable for electric power. By changing the tilt of the needle electrode, we investigated how the void and the thickness of the insulating layer influence the partial discharge(PD) characteristics and the insulating breakdown. In order to investigate the PD characteristics, The XLPE cable was used to the specimens and the tungsten electrode was used with the needle electrode. And the inner semi-conductive layer material of XLPE cable was used with the negative electrode by bonding with the use of conduction tape. The size of the specimens was manufactured to be $16{\times}40{\times}30[mm^3]$. We confirmed the effect on changing the PD characteristics according to the changing voltage and the tilt of the electrode after applying the voltage on the electrode from 1[kV] to 40[kV] at room temperature. In the PD characteristics, it was confirmed that the PD current of air void specimens with tilt was unstable more than that of no void specimens with tilt. It was also confirmed that the breakdown voltage was decreased because the effect of air void is more active than the change of the needle electrode tilt in the specimen with air void inside the insulation.
Pulse TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is often considered the most difficult of all the welding processes commonly used in industry. Because the welder must maintain a short arc length, great care and skill are required to prevent contact between the electrode and the workpiece. Pulse TIG welding is most commonly used to weld thin sections of stainless steel, non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys. It is significantly slower than most other welding techniques and comparatively more complex and difficult to master as it requires greater welder dexterity than MIG or stick welding. The problems associated with manual TIG welding includes undercutting, tungsten inclusions, porosity, Heat affected zone cracks and also the adverse effect on health of welding gun operator due to amount of tungsten fumes produced during the welding process. This brings the necessity of automation. Hence, In this paper an attempt has been made to build a customerized setup of Pulse TIG welding based on through review of Pulse TIG welding parameters. The cost associated for making automated TIG is found to be low as compared to SPM (Special Purpose machines) available in the market.
Electrical arc is the final stage of insulation breakdown and has high current density which cause heat and light in insulator. Insulator under electrical arc lost its insulating strength and eternal damages. Conventional criterion of electrical arc resistance in Standards have depended on the change of sound pressure and light color after damages on insulator by electrical arc. The recognition of these changes is done by human himself which was very subjective and resulted in some error to judge whether insulator has damages or not. This paper has shown that antenna method is the appropriate measure to judge electrical arc resistance for insulator. Antenna measures the electromagnetic waves radiated from tungsten electrodes with 6mm gap regulated by KSC2130. Applied voltage cross two tungsten electrodes have two different methods such as 1/8 10 and continuous 10mA. Signal amplitudes obtained by antenna has diminished after the damage of insulator, which will provide objective and good way to judge the electrical arc resistance.
Plasmas in saline solutions receive considerable attention in recent years. How the operating parameters influence the plasma characteristics and how the electrode erosion occurs have been topics that require further study. In the first part of this talk, the effect of the frequency on the plasmas characteristics in saline solution driven by 50~1000 Hz AC power will be presented. Two distinct modes, namely bubble and jetting modes, are identified. The bubble mode occurs under low frequencies. In this mode, one mm-sized bubble is tightly attached to the electrode tip and oscillates with the applied voltage. With an increase in the frequency, it shows the jetting mode, in which many smaller bubbles are continuous formed and jetted away from the electrode surface. Multiple mechanisms that are potentially responsible to such a change in bubble dynamics have been proposed and the dominant mechanism is identified. From the Stark broadening of the hydrogen optical emission line, electron densities in both modes are estimated. It shows clearly that the driving frequency greatly influences the bubble dynamics, which in turn alters the plasma behavior. In the second part, the study of the erosion of a tungsten electrode immersed in saline solution under conditions suitable for bio-medical applications is presented. The electrode is immersed in 0.1 M saline solution and is positively or negatively biased using a DC power source up to 600 V. It is identified that when the electrode is positively biased, erosion by the surface electrolytic oxidation is the dominant mechanism with an applied voltage below 150 V. An increase in the applied voltage leads to the formation of the plasma and the damage by the plasma and the thermal effect becomes more prominent. The formation of the gas film at the electrode surface leads to the formation of the plasma and hinders the electrolytic erosion. In the negatively-biased electrode, no electrolytic oxidation is seen and the damage is mostly likely due to the plasma erosion and the thermal effect.
Previous studies on the liquid Gallium ion sources used an electro-chemically etched tungsten wire with a coil-type heater. Such a structure requires excessive power consumption in the course of heating the liquid metal. In this work, a new structure is proposed that replaces the coil-type heater. It uses a Gallium reservoir made of six pre-etched 250 $\mu\textrm{m}$ tungsten wires that surround the needle electrode. Gallium loading at the reservoir is observed to be much more stable, resulting in an improved beam stability.
The plasma densities generated from a semiconductor bridge (SCB) device employing a capacitor discharge firing set have been measured by a novel diagnostic technique employing a microwave resonator probe. The spatial resolution of the probe is comparable to the separation between the two wires of the transmission lines (${\approx}$3 mm). This method is superior to Langmuir probes in this application because Langmuir probe measurements are affected by sheath effects, small bridge area, and unknown fraction of multiple ions. Measured electron densities are related to the land material and input energy. Although electron densities in the plasma generated by aluminum or tungsten-land SCB devices show a general tendency to increase steadily with power, at the higher energies, the electron densities generated from tungsten-land SCB devices are found to remain constant.
Various welding methods such as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding(GTAW), magnetic force electrical resistance welding and Laser Beam Welding(LBW) are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel rods. Even though the resistance and GTA welding processes are widely used in manufacturing commercial fuel rods, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of fuel rods in the hot cell Facility due to the complexity of the electrode alignment, the difficulty in replacing parts in a remote manner and the large heat input for the thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for the end cap welding of irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell. The remote laser welding apparatus in the hot cell Facility was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with an optical fiber transmission. The weldment quality such as microstructure and mechanical strength was satisfactory. The optimum conditions of laser welding for encapsulating irradiation fuel rods in the hot cell were obtained.
The purpose of this paper is to understand the behavior of GHTAW process under the space environment with the experimental and numerical analysis. Gas Hollow Tungsten Arc Welding (GHTAW) using a hollow tungsten electrode was adopted, since the ignition and discharge of a conventional GTAW process is not appropriate to the space environment due to low pressure in space. In order to clarify the phenomena of GHTAW under space environment, an investigation of thermal and physical properties of the GHTAW arc plasma was experimentally performed under low pressure conditions. Furthermore, the molten pool behavior and weldment of GHTAW were understood by CFD-based numerical analysis, based on the models of GHTA heat source, arc pressure and electromagnetic force induced by arc plasma, the characteristics of which were obtained by the captured images of a CCD camera.
The triggered vacuum switch (TVS) is widely used as a high power switch in the field of pulsed power application. TVS can produce current of higher than 100 kA within a microsecond after being triggered. A triggering high voltage pulse generator supplies a high voltage signal to the trigger system to initiate the discharge between a trigger pin and one of main electrode. The trigger system, which consists of a tungsten trigger electrode and cylindrical ceramic insulator around it, is normally installed at the center of main cathode electrode. The discharging characteristics of the trigger system strongly depend on the geometry, electrode material, vacuum pressure and so on. In addition, we especially will focus on the developing a triggering pulse generator, which can vary not only value of voltage but also pulse duration, because its properties gives pivot influences on the TVS discharge. To verify such effects, we made a 3.3 kJ TVS set-up initially. Thus we will discuss some of prominent results from 3.3 kJ TVS system. In parallel we will show on the design of 300 kJ TVS system for the high current in the future.
