It has been demonstrated that the in-cylinder turbulence is enhanced by inclined swirl with a SCV(swirl control valve). The inclined-tumble flow measurement and analysis were performed for various types of intake systems that generated several different combinations of swirl ratio and tumble ratio in the cylinder. Experiments were conducted in a 4-valve optically accessed transparent research engine using a backward-scatter LDV mode under motoring condition at 1,000rpm. The influence of swirl/tumble levels on the characteristics of turbulence was analysed. This study presents experimental results of the inclined-tumble flow structure, including the flow motion phenomena, angular momentum and turbulence intensity.
This paper presents characteristics of steady flow by variation of a combustion chamber and an intake port. Gas flow field inside a combustion chamber is the important factor in improving combustion stability and reduction of emission level. The flow characteristics such as flow coefficient, tumble ratio and swirl ratio are measured by the steady flow rig test with an impulse meter in this study. In the measuring, the valve lifts are varied between 1mm to 10mm. The three combustion chambers and two intake ports were applied to the steady flow apparatus in order to investigate the effect of swirl and tumble on the in-cylinder flow. As a result, tumble ratio were found to be different by variation of the combustion chambers and the intake ports. The data from the present study can be applied to design of a similar engine as basic data.
Flow characteristics have one of the effects in the process of engine. The numerical analysis makes it possible to predict the flow fields. This paper presents characteristics of steady flow according to variation of valve lift in a gasoline engine. The numerical computations have been made to observe the pressure distribution in accordance with the variable valve lift. Characteristics of tumble flow and swirl flow according to the variable valve has also been investigated. We could find that tumble ratio and swirl ratio is different between with/without PDA valve. The steady flow test was simulated through three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. As a result, this study shows the possibility of the usage of numerical simulation to predict the flow characteristics for gasoline engine.
Analysis and control of intake charge motion such as swirl and tumble are very important factors in improving the gasoline engine performance. In this paper, single-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) is used to investigate intake tumble patterns in a steady flow test rig of gasoline engine with dual-intake-valve and pent-roof combustion chamber. Intake tumble pattern is quantified in accordance with blockage ratio of TIV (tumble intensifying valve) with single- frame PTv.The view of the instantaneous 2-D velocity field gives a realistic understanding of in-cylinder flow field. Thus it is confirmed that PTV is a effective tool in engine design. In conventional port, two tumble structures appear clearly, and the larger one is observed under the exhaust valve side and the smaller is right below the intake valve side. The larger vorticity is observed in TIV port, thus it is concluded that TIV have an effect on intensified tumble motion in cylinder flow.
In-cylinder flows in a motored 3.5L four-valve SI engine were investigated quantitatively using three-component LDV system, to determine how engine configuration affects the flow field. The purpose of this work was to develop quantitative methods which correlate in-cylinder flows to engine performance. For this study, two distinct intake/piston arrangements were used to examine the flow characteristics. Quantification of the flow field was done by calculating two major parameters which are believed to characterize adequately in-cylinder motion. These quantities were turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) and tumble ratio in each plane at each crank angle. The results showed that in-cylinder flow pattern is dominated by the intake effects and two counter rotating vortices, developed during the intake stroke, produced relatively low tumble ratio. Therefore, the applicability of these quantities should be carefully considered when evaluating characteristics resulting from the complex in-cylinder flow motions.
In this study, in-cylinder flow of the swirl chamber type diesel engine numerically simulated by VECTIS code. The flow fields during the intake and compression process were also investigated in detail. Numerical results revealed that the generation and distortion of the swirling, tumbling vortices and those influences on turbulence kinetic energy by shape of the jet passage, angle and area. It was also found that flow characteristics were affected by inflow velocity that depends on change of the jet passage shape. Swirl ratio was increased according to decrease of jet passage area, and was affected by piston motion according to increase of jet passage angle. Tumbling vortices had the similar in various cases, but tumble ratio was increased with the inflow velocity. The generation of turbulence kinetic energy was considerably influenced by complex effects of swirling and tumbling vortices.
In this paper, tile characteristics of flow resulting from the configurations of piston head and intake-port of the cylinder in a gasoline-direct-injection engine are investigated numerically. Calculations are carried out from intake process to the end of compression. GTT code which includes the third order upwind Chakravarthy-Osher TVD scheme and κ-ε turbulence model with the law of wall as a boundary condition. As a result, a piston head with a smaller radius of curvature and larger radius gives stronger reverse tumble. It is also shown that as the maximum tumble ratio increases by the configuration of the intake-port the tumble ratio at the end of compression stroke increases. It is concluded that flows at the end of compression stroke can be controlled by the optimum design of intake-port and piston head.
Many researches have been studied on in-cylinder flow as one of dominant effects for an engine combustion. Specially because the combustion flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence at the end of compression process. Tumble and Turbulence ahead of combustion is very important phenomenon. As this phenomenon make research certainly, combustion condition will effectively be improve. This paper describes analytical results of the tumble flow, intensity, turbulence inside the cylinder of maritime engine. 3-D computation has been performed by using STAR-CD v3.26 solver and es-ice
The in-cylinder flow field of gasoline engine comprises unsteady compressible turbulent flows caused by the intake port, combustion chamber geometry and the change of the spatial shape. Thus the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder bulk flow plays an important role in the improvement of engine performances and the reduction of exhaust emission. The influences of tumble intensifying valve (TIV) and swirl intensifying valve (SIV), and various intake-flow conditions are compared with the tumble ratio obtained by the measured results of the in-cylinder gas flow. In order to obtain the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder gas flows of gasoline engine this investigation applied the particle tracking method to the analysis of gas flow characteristics. Various intake conditions such as tumble and swirl intensifying valve, the deactivated condition of one valve among two intake valves, and the other factors of gas flow are considered.
Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow. Recently, there are lots of studies on steady flow with different SCV geometries. In this study the flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady test rig for different SCV open ratios. Each swirl ratio of several SCV angle was quantified by swirl impulse meter and 2D-LDV measurement. The results showed that the swirl ratio was controlled between 2.3 and 3.8 based on SCV angles. The velocity distributions of in-cylinder flow field were measured by 2-D LDV test and visualized swirl and tumble flow pattern at different positions. In this engine , we found out that the swirl was dominant flow.
