A basaltic tuff formation (Upper Basaltic Tuff of the Janggi Group) occurs in close association with basalt (Yeonil Basalt) at the Tertiary Janggi basin. The purpose of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the basaltic tuff and associated basalt and to determine their mode of formation. The basaltic rocks of the study area show few distinct lithofacies, all of which are originated from the interaction of basaltic magma with external water. The four lithofacies include (1) sideromelane shard hyaloclastite, (2) pillow breccia, (3) entablature-jointed basalt, and (4) in-situ breccia. The sideromelane shard hyaloclastite constitutes most of the Upper Basaltic Tuff and has a gradual contact with the pillow breccia. The pillow breccia consists of a poorly sorted mixture of isolated and broken pillows, and small basalt globules and fragments engulfed in a volcanic matrix of sideromelane shard hyaloclastite. The entablature-jointed basalt occurs as a small body within the hyaloclastite. It is characterized by irregularly-curved joints known as entablature. The in-situ breccia occurs as a marginal facies of entablature-jointed basalt, and its width varies from 10 to 30m. The result of this study indicates that the basaltic tuff and associated basalts of the study area were produced by the volcanic activity of same period and the basaltic tuff was formed by subaqueous eruption of basaltic lava followed by nonexplosive quench fragmentation.
The author aimed to describe the volcano-stratigraphy and petrology of the volcanic mass in the Koheung peninsula, South Cheolla province. The volcanic mass is composed of the volcanics and intrusives of late Cretaceous which extruded the Pre-cambrian metamorphic(Jirisan gneiss complex) and the early Cretaceous sedimentary(Duwon Formation) basement. The volcanic pile consists of, in ascending order, Bibongsan andesite, Koheung tuff and breccia, and Palyeongsan welded tuff, and are intruded by ring intrusives( intrusive breccia, andesite porphyry, intrusive rhyolite and fine-grained quartz-diorite) and central pluton(diorite, quartz monzodiorite, biotite granite and micrographic granite). Bibongsan andesite mainly consists of andesite tuff and lava. Koheung tuff consists of alternation of fine tuff, coarse tuff and lapilli tuff, and Palyeongsan welded tuff which overlies Koheung tuff, comprises K-feldspar and quartz phenocrysts, elongated brown fiamme, lithic fragments in matrix of devitrified brown glass shards, and mainly consists of rhyodacite to rhyolite vitric ash-flow tuff. The results of petrochemical studies of the igneous rocks suggest that the rocks were a serial differentiational products of fractional crystallization of calc-alkaline magma series. This study reveals that the volcanic mass in this area is inferred to the remnant of the resurgent cauldron, measuring 30 by 25 km in diameter. The cauldron block was lowered at least 1,000 m by ring fault displacement.
The volcanic stratigraphy and geochemistry of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the southern part of the Pusan showed that the volcanic rocks of the study area consist of alternating pyroclastic rocks and andesitic lavas, apparently constituting a thick volcanic sequence of a stratovolcano. The andesitic rocks contain augite, plagioclase, and hornblende as phenocrysts. Matrix minerals are augite, magnetite, hornblende, apatite. Mafic minerals, such as chlorite, epidote, sericite, and iron oxides occur as alteration products. Dacitic volcanic breccia and rhyolitic welded ash-flow tuff locally overlie the andesitic rocks. The rocks reported in the previous studies as andesitic breccia and andesite plot in the field of basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, dacite and rhyolite, based on their chemical compositions. The volcanic rocks of the study area belong to the calc-alkaline series, and the andesitic rocks which are predominant in the area plot to the field of orogenic andesite.
The volcanic rocks that make up Yeongdo island, an administrative district located on the southern coast of Busan, are composed of andesitic and rhyolitic rocks. Andesitic rock is mainly composed of volcanic breccia has a phenorysts of plagioclase and contains rock fragments. The rhyolitic rock is composed of volcanic angular rock at the base of Mt. Bongnae, and welded tuff forms the main mass of Mt. Bongnae. The fiamme structure can be easily observed with the naked eye, and the higher the altitude, the weaker the welded structure develops and the less the amount of rock fragments and crystals constituting the welded tuff. It is indicated that the magma that formed this study area is related to the tectonic environment of the continental margin related to subduction, and that it erupted after undergoing fractional cystallization at the same time with some contaminant in the continental crust. As a result of analyzing the main elements by altitude, it is believed to be the result of mixing at least 4 times or more of magma batches.
The studied area is largely occupied by thick piles of the late Cretaceous volcanic rocks of the Yucheon group, which is northeastern border part of the vast volcanic region in the Yucheon basin. The Yucheon group overlies the Geoncheonri Formation and is intruded by granitic and dioritic stocks and dykes. The group can be devided into two parts; the lower is Jusasan andesitic rocks which was called as Jusasan Porphyrite Formation by Tadeiwa in 1929, and the upper is Unmunsa rhyolitic rocks. The volcanic pile consists mainly of various tuffs such as tuff breccia, lapilli tuff, coarse to fine tuff and tuffaceous sediments, and interlayered flows, which range from basaltic andesite to rhyolite in their lithology. The results of petrochemical and volcanostratigraphic studies on the Jusasan andesitic socks suggest that the volcanic rocks were derived from two cyclic evolutions of magmatic fractionation. Systematic study of 5226 joints from the area reveals two sets of steep joints striking $N20^{\circ}-40^{\circ}E$ and $N40^{\circ}-70^{\circ}W$, are dominant and coincide with the fault pattern developed in the area. Three defferent maximum principal stress axes were recognized from conjugate shear joints, which are trending east-west, north-northwest, and north-northeast.
The south and southwestern parts of Jeonra-namdo has been known as an alunite province in Korea. The alunite deposits investigated for the present study are Okmaisan, Seongsam, Bugog, Gasado south, Gasado north, Jangsando, Dogcheon and Jungyongri deposits. The main purpose of this study is to depict the genetical origin of the alunite deposits. The rocks distributed in the areas mentioned above consist chiefly of rhyolitic tuff, breccia tuff and andesitic tuff of Cretaceous age which represent different episodes of volcanic activities during Cretaceous epoch. The attitude of bedding of the tuffaceous rocks varies from place to place but generally dips very gently. The alunite deposits are embedded mostly in the rhyolitic tuff so that they appear as layered deposits, this occurrence may be the result of stratigraphic and lithologic controls. The result of this study can be summarized as below. The mineral sequence studied by the mineral paragenesis and the result of the spectrograph anlyses is such that (1) alunite was formed at first and pyrophyllite was nearly contemporaneous with alunite but pyrophyllite formation can be recognized as a secondary mineralization products, (2) kaoline was succeeded to form later and hematite finally deposited, and (3) pyrite was deposited from the begining to the end of the above mineralization period. The compositional change of host rocks is such that CaO, $SiO_2$ and $Na_2O$ were largely removed from the parent rocks and some $Al_2O_3$ and $SO_3$ were transported by the solution so as to enrich the rocks. The sequencial process of such mineralization has resulted in forming those distinguish mineral zones; alunite, kaoline, pyrophyllite, silicifide and sulphide zone which manifest irregular shape. These deposits were formed by hydrothermal solution which was possibly low temperature and contained sulphuric acid originated from $H_2S$ and $SO_2$ gases.

Volcanostratigraphy in Ulleung Island is divided into 4 stratigraphic groups: Dodong Basaltic Rocks, Ulleung Group, Seonginbong Group and NariGroup. The main pyroclastics in them includes lapilli tuff intercalated within the Dodong Basaltic Rocks, lapilli tuff at the top of Sadong Breccia, Sataegam Tuff, Gombawi Welded Tuff, Bongrae Scoria Deposits, Maljandeung Tuff, Nari Scoria Deposits and Jugam Scoria Deposits. Analysing eruption types, The lapilli tuff in the Dodong Basaltic Rocks is derived from Surtseyan eruption, and the Bongrae, Nari and Jugam Scoria Deposits are caused by Strombolian eruptions or/and sub-Plinion eruptions, but the Sataegam Tuff and Maljandeung Tuff are derived from Plinian and phreatoplinian eruptions. Among them the large-scaled eruptions. In particular, the eruptions of Maljandeung were large enough to result in caldera collapse, and had falled out tephras to the eastern Korean peninsula but even Japan Islands. The magma with high potential to be still alive is judged to be trachyandesitic and phonolitic in composition. If the trachyandesitic magma explodes, it will probably result in a strombolian eruption and have a fairly low explosivity, but if the phonolitic magma explodes, it will probably result in a plinian eruption and have a much higher explosivity. If the eruption had a high explosivity, there is a possibility that it could easily be converted into a phreatoplinian eruption due to the influx of groundwater by the easy generation of fractures. These large-scaled eruptions could fall out tephras to the eastern Korean peninsula but even Japan Islands.
Volcanic rocks related to the Guamsan cadera, which find in the southeastern Cheongsong, are divided into Volcanic breccia, Guamsan Tuff and Post-collapse intrusions. We determined their eruption, intrusion and caldera-forming timings based on SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating. The dating results yield earlier eruption age of $63.77{\pm}0.94Ma$ from the lower ash-flow tuff and an later eruption age of $60.1{\pm}1.8Ma$ from the upper ash-flow tuff of the Guamsam Tuff, and intrusion age of $60.65{\pm}0.95Ma$ from the rhyolite ring dyke of the Post-collapse intrusions. The age data suggest that the Guamsan caldera is formed in 60.65~60.1 Ma between eruption of the upper ash-flow tuff and intrusion of the rhyolite ring dyke. The Guamsan cadera exhibits the volcanic processes of a perfect igneous cycle passing from ash-flow eruptions through caldera collapse to ring intrusions during 63.77~60.1 Ma.

The constituting rocks of Multi-storied Round shape stone Pagoda of Unjusa Temple are lithic tuff and rhyolite tuff breaccia which show green or grey and also rock fragment with poor roundness are present in the structure. lithic tuff is composed of feldspar and quartz which are glassy texture and cryptocrystalline and also micro crystalline are scattered. phenocryst quartz and feldspar in the substrate composed of feldspar and opaque minerals are found in rhyolite tuff breaccia. dust, exfoliation, cavity, fracture and crack are observed in all the stone of the pagoda and the result of Infrared Thermography shows partial inter cavities have developed severely which may cause further exfoliation. In addition, a great deal of various grey, green, and yellow brown lichen as well as bryophyte are present at the upper part of eastern and western roof stone located above the third floor. Discolors remarkably shown at stereobate and roof stone are identified as inorganic pollutants such as manganese oxide, iron oxide and iron hydroxide. The stone of the pagoda of the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) and the Weathering Potential Index (WPI) are 55.69 and 1.12 respectively and this corresponds to a highly weathered stage. The measured values, average ultrasonic velocity 2,892m/s, coefficient of weathering 0.4k and compressive strength $1,096kg/cm^3$, suggest that the rock strength and durability are weakened.

The Dongmakgol Tuff is divided into 8 lithofacies based on their grain size and depositional structures: massive tuff breccia(TBm), welded tuff and lapilli tuff(LTw), rheomorphic tuff and lapilli tuff(LTr), massive lapilli tuff(LTm), stratified lapilli tuff(LTs), gradedly bedded lapilli tuff(LTg), crudely bedded lapilli tuff(LTb) and massive fine tuff(Tm). They can be divided into 3 pyroclastic rock group based on their constituents of the lithofacies. The lower group(LI) is composed of LTm, LTw and LTr, which are interpreted to have resulted from emplacement of voluminous pyroclastic flows due to ignimbrite-form eruption to boiling-over eruption. The middle group(LT+MI) consists of LTs, LTg and LTm associated with Tm in the lower part, and of LTm, LTw and LTr in the middle and upper parts; these suggest that started with deposition of pyroclastic surges from phreatoplinian eruption by poor eternal water, passed through emplacement of pyroclastic flows from ignimbrite-form eruption and ended with deposition of voluminous pyroclastic flows from boiling-over eruption. The upper group(lUT+uUT+UI) is composed of LTs, LTg and Tm in the lowermost, TBm, LTb, LTb and Tm in the lower part, and LTm and LTw in the middle and upper part, suggesting that began with deposition of surges from phreatoplinian eruption, passed through deposition of pumice- and ash-fallouts from plinian eruption and transformed into emplacement of pyroclastic flows due to boiling-over eruption. As result, eruptive processes in the Dongmakgol Tuff approximately began with phreatoplinian or/and plinian eruption, transformed into ignimbrite-forming eruption and proceeded into boiling-over eruption in each volcanism, but proceeded presumably without phreatoplinian or plinian eruption in the earlier stage of 1st volcanism.
