Experimentation and modeling on the flow of R407c and R290 through capillary tubes (R407C 및 R290 냉매에 대한 모세관내 유동특성 실험 및 모델링)

  • Mass flow rates of R407C and R290 through capillary tubes were measured with various capillary tube geometries and flow conditions. For all refrigerants tested in the present study, mass flow rate through the capillary tube was strongly dependent on the condensing pressure, subcooling and capillary length and diameter. The flow rate of R407C was 5~10[%] higher than that of R22 at the same condensing temperature and degree of subcooling, while flow rate for R290 was 40[%] lower than that for R22. Based on experimental results, an empirical correlation was developed using Pi theorem to predict the mass flow rate through capillary tubes. The predicted flow rates using the model were consistent with the experimental data within ${\pm}$10[%].

Experimental Investigation of R-22 Condensation in Tubes with Small Inner Diameter

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer experiments were conducted in two small diameter (ø17.5, ø4.0) tubes. Comparison with the existing in-tube condensation heat transfer correlations indicated that these correlations over predict the present data. For example, Akers correlation over predicted the data up to 104 %. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of the ø4.0 I.D. tube was smaller than that of the ø7.5 I.D tube; at the mass velocity of 300 kg/$m^2$s, the difference was 12 %. The pressure drop data of the small diameter tubes were highly (two to six times) over predicted by the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation. Sub-cooled forced convection heat transfer test confirmed that Gnielinski's single phase heat transfer correlation predicted the data reasonably well.

  • Laser welding is obviously an attractive method to join small, thin parts such as small stainless steel tubes, but it is very sensitive to the joint clearance and tolerance, and this makes laser welding difficult to obtain consistent welding qualities over time. Recently, Plasma Augmented Laser Welding(PALW) is being developed to solve these problems. In this study, plasma arc welding(PAW) was introduced to join conventional V-grooved butt joint of thin stainless steel strips using single laser heat source in manufacturing small stainless steel tubes. The effect of the welding speed enhancement is investigated by the experiments. Effects of welding directions, distance between the heat sources and intensity of arc heat source on the optimal welding speed was investigated. Through this research, it was confirmed that PALW process has higher welding speed and robustness than laser welding process.

  • Porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming of hollow section tubes difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Because of the complicated structure of die assembly, extrusion process as a forming of hollow section tubes has been investigated experimentally Therefore, analytic approaches that are useful in profitable die design and in the improvement of productivity are inevitably demanded Welding strength is affected by many parameters, which are such as extrusion ratio, extrusion speed, die shape, porthole number, bearing length, billet temperature and mandrel shape. In this paper, the parameters, which are such as billet temperature, bearing length and tube thickness, are examined. The welding pressures are examined through 3D simulation of non steady state and compared with experimental results.

Analysis of Failure in Miniature X-ray Tubes with Gated Carbon Nanotube Field Emitters

  • We correlate the failure in miniature X-ray tubes with the field emission gate leakage current of gated carbon nanotube emitters. The miniature X-ray tube, even with a small gate leakage current, exhibits an induced voltage on the gate electrode by the anode bias voltage, resulting in a very unstable operation and finally a failure. The induced gate voltage is apparently caused by charging at the insulating spacer of the miniature X-ray tube through the gate leakage current of the field emission. The gate leakage current could be a criterion for the successful fabrication of miniature X-ray tubes.

  • The objective of the current investigation is to establish techniques in micro pattern forming operations of polymeric circular tubes by using hydrostatic pressing. This method was developed and successfully applied to the micro pattern forming on polymeric plates. The key idea of the new technique is to pressurize multiple vacuum-packed substrate-mold stacks above the glass transition temperature of the polymeric substrates. The new process is thought to be a promising micro-pattern fabrication technique for two reasons; first, (hydro-) isostatic pressing ensures a uniform micro-pattern replicating condition regardless of the substrate area and thickness. Second, multiple curved substrates can be patterned at the same time. With the prototype forming machine for the new process, micro prismatic array patterns, 25um in height and 90 degrees in apex angle, were successfully made on the PMMA circular tubes with diameters of 5~40mm. These results show that this process can be also used in the micro pattern forming process on curved plates such as circular tube.

  • The reinforced concrete column confined by square steel tubes(RCST) is a reinforced column (RC) confined by thin steel tubes which cover over the full length of the column but terminates 15mm from the column's ends. The steel tube is in uniaxial tension stress state and won't buckle when the column sustains axial load. This will highly increase the bearing capacity and ductility of the columns. The hysteretic behavior of four square RCST columns and one square RC column were experimentally studied under constant axial load and lateral cyclic load. The wide-to-thickness (D/t) ratio of RCST columns employed in this research is 75. The main variables of the experiment were axial load ratio and compressive strength of the concrete. Based on the findings in this research, RCST columns exhibits high lateral strength, ductility, and energy dissipation ability.

Characterization of instability in a-Si:H TFT LCD utilizing copper as electrodes

  • The hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film transistor (a-Si:H TFT) with copper as source and drain electrode has been fabricated to obtain its transfer characteristics and stressed with positive and negative bias to investigate the instability variation comparing to conventional MoW-Al based TFT device. The results show that there is no copper diffusion into active layer of a-Si:H TFT, even during the thermal process. In addition, a 15-inch XGA a Si:H TFT LCD display utilizing Cu as gate electrodes has been developed.

  • Accompanied by the demand of thin type TV, the application of the TFT LCD display device is more and more extensive. The key material which influences the optical performance of the TFT LCD is optical film. Due to the rapid development of the big size TFT LCD for the recent years, the supply has been unable to meet the demand for its relative material. Therefore, we bring up a alternate choice-the hybrid compensation film which could not only show well optical performance, but also lessen the quantity of usage in TAC in order to make the optical film free of shortage.

  • A novel column spacer with concaved top surface has been made through conventional photolithography process. The mechanical characteristics of this spacer were also investigated by using load-unload cycle test. According to the experimental results, the deformation ratio of this new designed spacer is larger than that of conventional column spacers about two times in the lower loading stage. At the higher loading stage there is no obviously difference in deformation ratio between the new designed spacer and the conventional spacer.
