  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop through tubes has been investigated experimentally for a compound heat transfer enhancement. The test tubes were spirally indented tubes with wire coil inserts which had a various combinations of pitch and helix angles. Pure water was used as working fluids for the experiments, Heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the test tubes were evaluated from the values of measured temperatures, flow rates and pressure drops. An performance evaluation was performed to find an optimal combination of spirally indented tubes with wire coil inserts. When the helix angle of wire coil insert are $71^{\circ}-72^{\circ}$, the best heat transfer enhancement was shown. The friction factor was 9 - 13 times higher than those in smooth tubes, and the heat transfer was enhanced a maximum of 500%.

  • Falling-film evaporation experiments with aqueous lithium bromide (LiBr) solution were performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of enhanced copper tubes. Enhanced tubes (a knurled tube, a spirally grooved tube, and a tube coated with $20{\mu}m$ aluminum particles) and a bare tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged evaporation fluxes of water were obtained from horizontal tubes with various film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. The enhanced performance of steam generation was compared between tubes with varying parameters. The knurled tube geometry showed the most excellent performance among the tubes tested. The specified enhanced tubes were more useful for generating steam on a low grade heat source such as waste heat.

  • This paper describes a series of compression tests carried out on concrete filled double skin tubes (CFDST). Both outer and inner tubes are cold-formed circular hollow sections (CHS). Six section sizes were chosen for the outer tubes with diameter-to-thickness ratio ranging from 19 to 57. Two section sizes are chosen for the inner tubes with diameter-to-thickness ratio of 17 and 33. The failure modes, strength, ductility and energy absorption of CFDST are compared with those of empty single skin tubes. Increased ductility and energy absorption have been observed for CFDST especially for those having slender outer tubes with larger diameter-to-thickness ratio. Predictions from several theoretical models are compared with the ultimate strength of CFDST stub columns obtained in the tests. The proposed formula was found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Alloy 600 and 690 steam generator tubes fabricated in Korea were evaluated by flare tests according to ASTM standards. The stress acting in the tube elements during the tests was predicted. All the tubes, including alleys 600 and 690, satisfied the requirement of a 30% or 35% O.D expansion. Flow curves obtained from the flare test were found to be higher in alloy 690 tubes than in alloy 600 ones. The difference between alloy 600 and 690 tubes increased gradually with flaring percentage (F.P,%). An effective stress corresponding to mean yield stress was introduced and calculated. It showed that the prediction values were in good agreement with the measured ones for all the 690 and 600 alloy tubes. It became possible to predict the amount of acting stresses within tubes during expansion process.

  • Light flicker is a notorious phenomenon influencing light quality. The flicker of the light flux outputs from the light sources perceived by human eyes depends upon the lamp brightness fluctuations for projector display. This paper describes a ballast ignition control system, which makes the lamp strike frequency phase lock the blanking time period to minimize the flicker effect

  • This paper examines the lava tubes designated as a natural monument in Jeju Island, and then makes the several suggestions for conserving and managing them. The cave entrances should be scientifically and strictly managed to prevent the deterioration, and to preserve the interior ecosystem, of the lava tubes. The land use and vegetation of the ground surface over the lava tubes should be also systematically managed; the destroyed sand dunes must be recovered for the development of speleothem in the lava tubes, and the plants with deep roots must be removed for the prevention of ceiling collapse. The provincial authorities should manage the ground surface over the lava tubes as a public land to remove the factors threatening the stability of the lava tubes. Since the roads crossing the ground surface are likely to cause the collapse of the lava tubes, new roads bypassing the caves need to be constructed, and warning signs should be also installed at the traverse points. A monitoring system on the cultural properties protection area over the lava tubes could be effectively established by encouraging residents to participate the conservation program of lava tubes. Since the falling blocks from ceilings have been usually observed in the lava tubes, it is urgent to examine their stability. In particular, the dangerous sections must be continuously monitored for taking a quick measure against the collapse. The air environments of lava tubes need to be scientifically analyzed based upon the long-term observations. The lighting equipments must be improved to minimize the green pollution in the lava tubes open to the public. The numbers of visitors should be also controlled to prevent the destruction and contamination of lava tubes caused by a large number of visitors.

  • Steam generator tubes play an important role in safety because they constitute one of the primary barriers between the radioactive and non-radioactive sides of the nuclear power plant. For this reason, the integrity of the tubes is essential in minimizing the leakage possibility of radioactive water. The integrity of the tubes is evaluated based on NDE (non-destructive evaluation) inspection results. Especially ECT (eddy current test) method is usually used for detecting the flaws in steam generator tubes. However, detection capacity of the NDE is not perfect and all of the "real flaws" which actually existing in steam generator tunes is not known by NDE results. Therefore reliability of NDE system is one of the essential parts in assessing the integrity of steam generators. In this study POD (probability of detection) of ECT system for ODSCC in steam generator tubes is evaluated using multivariate logistic regression. The cracked tube specimens are made using the withdrawn steam generator tubes. Therefore the cracks are not artificial but real. Using the multivariate logistic regression method, continuous POD surfaces are evaluated from hit (detection) and miss (no detection) binary data obtained from destructive and non-destructive evaluation of the cracked tubes. Length and depth of cracks are considered in multivariate logistic regression and their effects on detection capacity are evaluated.

  • Energy absorption capabilities and failure modes of circular tubes made of glass/epoxy with two trigger mechanisms were evaluated. Three types of glass/epoxy tubes were fabricated using a hand lay-up method with unidirectional and woven fabric prepregs tapes, and a filament winding method. The one end of the fabricated tubes was machined for the bevel trigger and tulip trigger. Then, crush tests were conducted at 10 mm/min loading speed, wherein the glass/epoxy tubes were crushed by a brittle fracturing mode combined with fragmentation and lamina-splaying modes. The UD glass/epoxy tubes with a bevel trigger and the filament winded tubes with a tulip trigger showed the maximum and minimum specific energy absorptions, respectively, with a difference of 9.3%. The tube with a tulip trigger exhibited a maximum reduction of 5.7% in the initial peak load; the tube with a bevel trigger showed a maximum increase of 2.9% in the specific energy absorption.

  • This paper is to investigate collapse mechanisms of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)composite tubes and to evaluate collapse characteristics on the change of interlaiminar number and ply orientation angle of outer under static and impact axial compression loads. When a CFRP composite tube is crushed, static/impact energy is consumed by friction between the loading plate and the splayed fronds of the tube, by fracture of the fibers, matrix and their interface. These are associated with the energy absorption capability. In general, CFRP tube with 6 interlaminar number(C-type), absorbed more energy than other tubes(A, B, D-types). The maximum collapse load seemed to increase as the interlaminar number of such tubes increases. The collapse mode depended upon orientation angle of outer of CFRP tubes and loading status(static/impact). Typical collapse modes of CFRP tubes are wedge collapse mode, splaying collapse mode and fragmentation collapse mode. The wedge collapse mode was shown in case of CFRP tubes with 0° orientation angle of outer under static and impact loadings. The splaying collapse mode was shown in only case of CFRP tubes with 90°orientation angle of outer under static loadings, however in Impact tests those were collapsed in fragmentation mode .
