  • In this study, basic design data which were required for development of highly efficient ice storage system with low temperature latent heat were experimentally obtained. The ice storage system considered in this study was the one that has been widely used in the developed country and called the ice-on-coil type. Using the system, the ice storage performance for various design parameters which were the flow direction and the inlet temperature of the secondary fluid was tested. In addition, the clockwise variation of the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM in the ice storage tank were investigated. During the melting processes in the ice storage tank with several vertical tubes, decrease of the solid-liquid interface area, which was the heat transfer area, between the floating ice and the water made the decreasing rate of IPF less. Also, the total melting energy for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow during the melting process, but this trend did not appear if the initial temperature of the PCM was $4^{\circ}C$. The average ice recovery efficiency for the upward flow of the secondary fluid was higher than that for the downward flow.

  • Hydrogen-permselective silica membranes were synthesized within tim walls of porous Vycor tubes by chemical vapor depostion of $SiO_2$. Film deposition was carried out using $SiCl_4$ hydrolysis either in the oppm shag reactants or in the one-sided geometry. At temperatures above $600^{\circ}C$ the permeation rate of hydrogen thorough the silica films varied between 0.01 and $025cm^3(STP)/cm^2-min-atm$ depending on the reaction geometry and the $H_2 : N_2$ permeation ratio was about 1000. Permeation rates of both $H_2$ and $N_2$ increased with increasing temperature. The silica membranes produced by one-sided deposition have higher hydrogen permmeation rates than those produced by the opposing reactants geometry although the membranes formed in an opposing reactants geometry were relatively stable during the heat treatment or after exposure to ambient air. These membranes can be applied to high temperature gas separations or membrane reactors once the film deposition process is optimized to get high permeability as well as good stability.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the use of geotextile tribes for dewatering high water content sludges and sediments and to evaluate their feasibility and affecting fsctors. To accomplish these objectives, pressure filtration tests were conducted on woven geotextile (Geotex$\circledR$ 46T and 1212T) fir high water content materials with a modified experimental apparatus. Test results indicate that 1) the filter cake formed on the inside of the geotextile tube is the major contributor to the retention of fine particles, but also causes a decrease in permeability, 2) controlling the formation of the filter cake and thus achieving a balance between soil retention and permeability is vital to a successful project, and 3) geotextiles, sludge properties, and filtration pressures have some effects on the dewatering efficiency and dewatering rate.

  • This study was experimentally performed in order to estimate the errors due to the leakage of transmitter gaugelines in the orifice flow meter for natural gas. It would be a serious problem in safety if a large quantity of leak was occurred at the tubes or fittings like valve. But in most cases the safety problems might be rarely happened because the gas leak detectors could be operated in advance and the various kinds of inspection would be also fulfilled periodically. If the leakage was occurred continuously with an undetectable amount at the gaugelines for measuring the pressure or the differential pressure(DP), the amount of leakage might be an error or an unaccounted flow(UAE). In addition if the measuring value of pressure or DP were affected by the leakage, it might also be a measurement error. The experiments were performed to estimate the amount of leakage and to check the DP changes if it exited. First, through the measurement of the air pressure changes in the airtight container connected to a transmitter with gaugelines as the time passed, the amount of leakage causing from the fittings of gaugelines was roughly estimated. As changing the leak position of the gaugeline, the leak was intentionally made to break out. The variance of DP was checked as controlling the extent of leakage and compared to no leak conditions. Consequently, under the normal maintenance conditions, the result represented that the amount of leakage causing from the gaugelines was insignificant and also the DP changes on leakage conditions were too small to cause the errors of measurements.

  • The tube thickness map of water wall has been measured in a commercial circulating fluidized bed combustor (200 ton steam/hr, $4.97{\times}9.90{\times}28.98m$ height) with ultrasonic method and tube erosion has been discussed. Severe tube erosion took place in the splash region on all waterwalls including wingwalls. Erosion on the lower part of front and rear walls, close to both side walls, was more serious than other places. Erosion of some tubes around the gas exit was found to be noticible. Tube erosion increased on the wingwall as the position of the tube become closer to the center of the combustor crosssection.

  • Aluminum nitride was synthesized using a carbothermal method from mesoporous alumina having a high surface area (> $1,000m^2/g$) as an aluminum source and CNTs (carbon nano tubes) as a carbon source. In this case the mesoporous alumina was used as the starting material instead of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ with the expectation that the mesopores in mesoporous alumina act as channels for N2 gas and elimination of CO generated as by-product. It is also expected that the synthetic temperature should be lower compared to the use of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ as a starting material due to its high surface area. The crystallinity of the produced aluminum nitride was studied by XRD and FT-IR, and the microstructure was investigated by FE-SEM. Also the purity of the aluminum nitride was analyzed through N/O determinator and ICP analysis.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate evaporative heat transfer characteristics of R-134a flowing in a small diameter tube. Test section was made of stainless steel tube with an inner diameter of 2.2mm and was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. The local saturation temperature of refrigerant flowing in a tube is calculated from the measured local saturation pressure by using an equation of state. Inner wall temperature was calculated from measured outer wall temperature, accounting for heat generation in the tube and one dimensional heat conduction through the tube wall. Mass quality of refrigerant flowing in a tube was calculated by considering energy balance in the pre-heater and the test section. Heat flux was varied from 19 to 64kW/$m^2$, and mass flux was chanted from 380 to 570kg/$m^2$s for each heat flux condition. From this study, heat transfer in a small diameter tube is affected by heat flux as well as mass flux for a wide range of mass quality. Heat transfer coefficient in a small diameter tube is much greater than that in medium sized tubes. Test results in this study are compared with Gungor and Winterton correlation, which gives an absolute average deviation of 27%.

  • The evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of R-22 and R-407C in horizontal copper tubes were investigated experimentally. The main components of therefrigerant loop are a receiver, a compressor, a mass flow meter, a condenser and a double pipe type evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube of 4.3 mm and 6.4 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes were varied from 100 to $300[kg/m^2s]$ and the saturation temperature of evaporator were 5 [$^{\circ}C$]. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-407C rise with the increase in mass flux and vapor quality. The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R-22 for inner diameter tube of 4.3 mm and 6.4 mm is about $7.3{\sim}47.1%$ and $5.68{\sim}46.6%$ higher than that of R-407C, respectively.

  • In this paper, a high efficiency leakage transformer for neon tube is developed to improve its power factor, to reduce its core loss and weight by using a technique of shape optimization and grain direction of non-oriented silicon steel strip. A protection circuit is designed for all types of neon transformer loaded with one or more neon tubes. Whenever the neon tube fails to be started up or comes to the life end, or encounters faults with open-circuits at the output terminals of the neon transformer, the electronic type protection circuit will be initiated to avoid more critical hazards. These neon transformers need a electronic type protection circuit to prevent from current stresses on circuit components by neon tube fail. The input of the transformer is automatically cut on when the abnormal condition occurs, preventing waste of no-load power.

  • The present study was carried out to produce in vitro fertilized embryos with immature follicular oocytes collected by transvaginal aspiration from Holstein cows. A simple aspiration apparatus consists of two stainless steel tubes, an inner tube (needle holder; 1.2cmdiameter, 55cm long) and an outer tube (1.5cm diameter, 4Scm long), and a hand-operated vacuum pump was used. Under epidural anesthesia, the needle guide was passed into the vagina of the cow to a point next to the cervix. An ovary was placed against the wall of the vagina over the end of the aspiration needle by rectal manipulation. As the needlepassed into the ovary, an assistant was asked to apply vacuum(l00mrnHg) and the ovary was manipulated back and forth in all directions over the needle. When all sites of the ovary was aspirated, the needle was withdrawn and the needle guide was moved to the other side of ovary and the procedure was repeated. When the oocyte aspiration procedure was finished, collected fluid was transported to laboratory. Oocytes surrounded with at least 1 layer of cumulus cells were matured, fertilized and cultured in vitro. The results were as follows; Ninety seven oocytes were collected by transvaginal aspiration from seventeen Holstein cows(5.7 /head). The number of oocytes surrounded with at least 1 layer of cumulus cells were 60(61.9%). Following in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture, the cleavage and development rate to morula+blastocyst were 83.3% and 30.0%, respectively. From this study, transferable in vitro fertilized embryos could be produced with imma- ture follicular oocytes collected by transvaginal aspiration from Holstein cows using a simple aspiration apparatus.
