  • The improvement of energy conservation is mandatory to decrease consumption of fossil fuels and to minimize negative impacts on the environment which originates from large cooling and heating demand. The absorption heat pump technology has a large potential for energy-saving in this respect. Absorption heat pump is a means to upgrade waste heat without the addition of extra thermal energy. The higher performance of absorber is of great importance for absorption heat pump cycle. In this study, in order to improve the performance of absorber, the absorber of tangential feed of a liquid phase with spiral tube has been investigated using methanol-glycerine as a working fluid. The spiral tube and tangential feeding generate the turbulence into the liquid flow while increasing the mass and heat transfer coefficients. The simultaneous heat and mass transfer were found to take place in a liquid turbulent film in the absorber with the spiral tube during the process of gas absorption. By calculating mass and heat transfer coefficients by measurement of the concentration and the temperature of each position in the absorber, the entrance was found to be more effective in enhancing mass and heat transfer.

  • Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.

  • The present study investigated the optimization of the absorption performance of the vertical absorber tube with falling film by considering heat and mass transfer simultaneously. Effects of film Reynolds number, geometric parameters by insert device (spring) and flow pattern on heat and mass transfer performances have been also investigated. Especially, effects of coolant flow rate and the flow pattern by geometric parameters has been observed for the total heat and mass transfer rates through both numerical and experimental studies. Based on both predicted values, the optimal coolant flow rate was predicted as 1.98 L/min. The maximum absorption rate of the spring inserted tube was increased by the maximum of $20.0\%$ than those for uniform film of bare tube. Average Sherwood numbers and Nusselt numbers were increased as Reynolds numbers increased under the dynamic and geometric conditions showing the maximum absorption performance.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of conductive and convective heat transfer occurred in a circular absorber of PTC (parabolic trough concentrator) for medium temperature solar energy utility were numerically investigated. A circular tube was considered as an absorber and the shape of PTC modeled in this study was based on the system that was installed in Korea Institute of Energy Research. Not only convection inside the tube but also conduction through the wall of the tube were analyzed, simultaneously. Circumferentially non-uniform heat flux that was simulated from the non-uniform solar disc model proposed by Jose was applied as thermal boundary condition on the tube surface. And, hydrodynamically fully developed laminar velocity profile was used as the inlet boundary condition and it was assumed that the working fluid was water. And, local heat fluxes at the interface of the tube and the working fluid were calculated for different wall thickness and thermal conductivity of the tube at various Reynolds number. Based on the results, the effects of thermal conduction of the tube on the local heat transfer were investigated.

  • Work-related falls are a major problem in the construction and roofing industries. To avoid serious injury to the worker caused by high decelerations or forces, different systems to absorb the energy of a fall are implemented in personal protective equipment. In this study, shock energy absorber lanyard protection tube was prepared using high tenacity PET fiber, P-aramid fiber, and UHMWPE fiber, respectively. Dynamic load test and static load test, bursting strength test based on the Korea fall protection equipment standard(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency standard 2013-13) or conformity European safety test(CE : EN355) were conducted. Especially maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of energy absorber showed below 6,000N.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of the behavior of the LiBr solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber. The model developed here accounts for the details of the droplets formation and impact process for absorption on horizontal tubes including the heat transfer from solution film to the tube wall. Especially. the characteristic of unsteady behavior of solution flow has been investigated. Flow visualization studies shown that the solution droplets and falling films have some of the complex characteristics. It is found that. with the numerical conditions similar to the operating condition of an actual absorption chiller/heater, the outlet solution temperature and heat flux from solution film to the tube wall have a stable periodic behavior with time. The solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber is a periodic unsteady flow. The results from this model are compared with previous experimental observation taken with a high-speed digital video camera and shown good agreement.

  • This research is concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes are a bare tube, a groove tube, a corrugated tube and a spring-inserted tube. The additive concentration is about 0.08 mass%. The heat transfer coefficient is measured as a function of the film Reynolds number in the range of 20~200. Experiments are carried out at higher cooling water temperature of $35^{\circ}C$to simulate an air cooling condition for several kinds of absorber testing tubes. The experimental results with and without surfactant are compared. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which is generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube. Especially, it is clarified that the tube with an spring-inserted has the enhancement effect.

  • According to the increase of occupation density of microwave frequency band on use microwave environments have been congested extensively. For shielding unnecessary electromagnetic wave of preventing the electromagnetic wave reflection a good conductor a low resistive material or a lossy material is mainly used. As a method to measure the absorbing characteristics of microwave absorber the fundamental microwave measuring method can be used. There is however a big problem in measuring errors since the wavelength of microwave is very short especially as in the case as microwave absorber for RADAR. Therefore this research aimed to a converting adaptor of 20mm${\Phi}$ coaxial tube from a Type-N connector to 20mm${\Phi}$ coaxial tube and to use it for designing microwave absorber and evaluating absorbing characteristics. Furthermore the measurements of absorbing characteristics and material constants have performed and reviewed which were carried out by using the coaxial tube in the short type and by using rectangular waveguide respectively As a result the validity of the measured values have been confirmed.

  • Effect of a non-absorbable gas on the absorption process in a vertical tube absorber was investigated numerically. The water vapor mined with air as the non-absorbable gas is absorbed into LiBr/water solution film. The flow is assumed to be laminar and fully developed in both liquid and gas phases. The diffusion and energy equations were solved in both phases to give the temperature and concentrations, from which heat and mass fluxes were determined. It was shown that the local absorption rate decreases as the mass fraction of air in water vapor increases. The vapor pressure of water at the liquid-vapor interface reduces significantly since the non-absorbable gas is accumulated near the interface. The effect of non-absorbable gases on absorption rate becomes larger as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. For small amount of non-absorbable gases the total absorption rate of water vapor increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor decreases. Total absorption rate increases as the mass flow rate of the vapor increases for large concentration of non-absorbables at the inlet of an absorber.
