This study was conducted to investigate the brazing characteristics between Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel cladding tubes and bearing pads with filler metals of amorphous $Zr_{1-x}Be_x$(0.3$\leq$x$\leq$0.5) binary alloy, in which they were produced in the ribbon form by the melt-spinning metod. The crystallization behavior, stability, hardness and micro-structure of brazed zone were examined by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, micro-Vickers hardness test, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. $Zr_{1-x}Be_x$(0.3$\leq$x$\leq$0.4) amorphous alloys were crystallized to $\alpha$-Zr with increasing the temperature, and the rest were transformed to ZrBe$_2$at higher temperatures. On the other hand, $Zr_{1-x}Be_x$(0.4$\leq$x$\leq$0.5) amorphous alloys were crystallized to $\alpha$-Zr and ZrBe$_2$, simultaneously. The thickness of the layer brazed with amorphous alloy was increased with increasing the beryllium content due to the higher diffusion of Be. The morphology of brazed layer with PVD Be filler metal showed dendrite while that brazed with amorphous alloys appeared globular. Micro-Vickers hardness of brazed zone increased as the beryllium content of filler metal was decreased.

Defects in dissimilar metal welds are reported to be on the increase during the operating lifespan and aging of nuclear power plants. In Korea, reported cases of defects due to dissimilar metal welds include the drain nozzle of a steam generator and RCS hot tube sampling nozzles. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a reliable automated nondestructive inspection technique and a system for the inspection of dissimilar metal welds of small diameter nozzles in a high radiation area of a nuclear power plant. In this study, to ensure effective defect inspection of small diameter nozzles (RCS high-temperature tube sampling nozzle) of a nuclear power plant, three different methods were developed. These include: (1) optimum inspection probe design by beam simulation, (2) multi-directions UT optimum inspection technique for the inspection of small diameters of different welded parts, and (3) remote control automatic inspection system. The developed technique and systems have been verified to be suitable for use in the inspection of defects in smaller diameter nozzles in nuclear power plants.

For the determination of chlorine in uranium compound, analytical methods by using a steam distillation and a pyrohydrolysis have been developed. The steam distillation apparatus was composed of steam generator, distilling flask and condenser etc. The samples were prepared with an aliquot of LiCl standard solution and a simulated spent nuclear fuel. A sample aliquot was mixed with a solution containing 0.2 M ferrous ammonium sulfate-0.5 M sulfamic acid 3 mL, phosphoric acid 6 mL and sulfuric acid 15 mL. The chloride was then distilled by steam at the temperature of $140^{\circ}C$ until a volume of $90{\pm}5\;mL$ is collected. The pyrohydrolysis equipment was composed of air introduction system, water supply, quartz reaction tube, combustion tube furnace, combustion boat and absorption vessel. The chloride was separated from powdered sample which is added with $U_3O_8$ accelerator, by pyrohydrolysis at the temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in a quartz tube with a stream of air of 1 mL/min supplied from the water reservoir at $80^{\circ}C$. The chlorides collected in each absorption solution by two methods was diluted to 100 mL and measured with ion chromatography to determine the recovery yield. For the ion chromatographic determination of chlorine in molten salt retained in a metal ingot, the chlorine was separated by means of pyrohydrolysis after air and dry oxidation, and grinding for the sample.
Nuclear fuel cladding used in a nuclear power plant must possess superior oxidation resistance in the coolant atmosphere of high temperature/high pressure. However, as was the case for the critical LOCA (loss-of-coolant accident) accident that took place in the Fukushima disaster, there is a risk of hydrogen explosion when the nuclear fuel cladding and steam reacts dramatically to cause a rapid high-temperature oxidation accompanied by generation of a huge amount of hydrogen. Hence, an active search is ongoing for an alternative material to be used for manufacturing of nuclear fuel cladding. Studies are currently aimed at improving the safety of this cladding. In particular, ceramic-based nuclear fuel cladding, such as SiC, is receiving much attention due to the excellent radiation resistance, high strength, chemical durability against oxidation and corrosion, and excellent thermal conduction of ceramics. In the present study, cladding with $SiC_f/SiC$ protective films was fabricated using a process that forms a matrix phase by polymer impregnation of polycarbosilane (PCS) after filament-winding the SiC fiber onto an existing Zry-4 cladding tube. It is analyzed the oxidation and microstructure of the metal cladding with $SiC_f/SiC$ composite protective films using a drop tube furnace for thermal shock test.

Heat pump systems based on ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems use the temperature difference between deep ocean water and surface ocean water to operate. However, they may have heat transfer degradation due to corrosion on the heat exchanger surface due to the salinity of sea water. This study presents experimental results for the heat transfer decrease of corroded metal tubes with respect to corrosion time. In order to replace high-priced titanium, electro-deposition (ED) coating was performed on aluminum tubes. Aluminum tubes with ED coating thicknesses of 10, 15, and $20{\mu}m$ were tested for double-tube heat exchangers after performing accelerated corrosion for 6, 12, and 18 weeks. The effects of the coating thickness and the corrosion time on the heat transfer degradation were investigated. From the results, the aluminum tube with an ED coating of $20{\mu}m$ thickness can be suggested as a candidate for replacing titanium tubes.

The corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tubes with post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) conditions(950, 1000, 1050, 1100 ℃ for 5 and 30 min) were evaluated by electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization and critical pitting temperature measurements. This study showed that the critical metallurgical factors affecting the degradation of corrosion resistance of a steel tube in as-welded condition were the unbalanced phase fraction(ferrite:austenite = 94:4), Cr2N precipitation, and phase transformation from the austenite phase to ɛ-martensite(via stress-induced phase transformation). The improvement in the corrosion resistance of the welded specimen depends greatly on the PWHT conditions. The specimens after PWHT conducted below 1000 ℃ showed inferior corrosion resistance, caused by precipitation of the sigma phase enriched with Cr and Mo. At 1100 ℃ for a longer duration in PWHT, the ferrite phase grows, and its fraction increases, leading to an unbalanced phase fraction in the microstructure. As a result, pitting can be initiated primarily at the interface between the ferrite/austenite phase, particularly in base metal.

Material degradation of Cr steels in using for boiler tubes was studied in the relation of microstructural changes like carbide behavior and mechanical properties of hardness and creep-rupture life. The carbide dissolution was occurred in 2Cr steel of T22 during high temperature operation. And the grain refinement within martensite lath of 12Cr steel of X20 was derived by the high temperature-long time exposure. But the specific phenomena of material degradation which might be represented by hardness or creep-rupture time of the used tubes were not shown in all the tubes of T22 and X20 even in the fire-side using.
Silica($SiO_2$) thin film was synthesized by a low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition(LPMOCVD) using organic silane compound. Triethyl orthosilicate was used as a source material. Operation pressure was 1~100 torr at outlet of the reactor and deposition temperature was $600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The experimental results showed that the high reaction temperature and high source gas concentration led to higher growth rate of $SiO_2$. The step coverage of films on micro-scale trenches was fairly good, which resulted from the phenomena that the condensed oligomers flow into the trenches. We estimated a reaction path that the source gas polymerizes and produces oligomers (dimer, trimer, tetramer, etc.), which diffuse and condense on the solid surface. The chemical species in the gas phase at the outlet of reactor tube were analyzed by quadrapole mass spectrometer. The peaks, assigned to be monomer, dimer of source gas and geavier molecules, were observed at 650 or $700^{\circ}C$. At higher temperature($900^{\circ}C$), the peaks of the heavy molecules disappeared, because almost all the source gas and intermediate(polymerized oligomer) molecules were oxidized or condensed on colder tube wall.

Works were focused on back pressure characteristics of ceramic fiber filter on DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) system and experiments were performed to select appropriate filter which can filter particulates. Filters were installed on metal -support tube which has openings for exhaust gas flow. Ceramic fiber filters with high specific surface area and adequate high temperature strength are commercially available for filtration of diesel particulates and in -situ hot regeneration. Thus, ceramic blanket and ceramic board which are used as insulating media were applied to filter and filtration apparatus was installed on exhaust gas line connected to 2.0 L diesel engine. Alternating filter structure to adapt DPF system, collection efficiency test of diesel particulates was measured. In case of ceramic blanket, pressure drop was low, caused by the destruction of soft structures. Also, particulate collection efficiency was decreased depending on loading time. In case of ceramic board, structure design was altered to reduce back pressure on DPF system. Structure design was altered to induce Z-flow by making 10 mm and 5 mm holes on the surface of media. Alteration of 5 mm hole showed that media have low back pressure but particulate collection efficiency was 77%, while 10 mm hole showed that of 90%.

A comprehensive methodology to consolidate the hypereutectic Al-27Si-X alloy via spray forming was investigated in an attempt to judge the feasiblilty of this alloy in applying wear resistant components. Billets having desired shape and microstructures were fabricated using forming parameters obtained from numerical calculations. Prior to tube extrusion of the spray formed billets, effects of various extrusion conditions, such as extrusion ratio, die temperature, and die configuration, on microstructures of the billet were studied. Based on results obtained from the preliminary extrusion tests, the formed billets were then hot extruded into a tubular shape. Various material properties of the extruded billet were measured and compared with the other candidate materials for anti-wear applications.
