  • A sectional analysis of trunk-lid carried out by using the equilibrium approach based on the force balance together with geometric relations and plasticity theory. In computing a force balance equation, it is required to define a geometric curve approximating the shape of sheet metal at any step of deformation from the interaction between the die and the deformed sheet. The trunk-lid panel material is assumed to possess normal anisotropy and to obey Hill's new yield criterion. Deformation of each section of trunk-lid panel is simulated and composed to get the three-dimensional shape by using CAD technique. It was shown that the three-dimensional shape composition of the two-dimensional analysis.

  • A sectional analysis of auto-body panel stamping is carried out by using the rigid-plastic FEM based on the membrane theory. The auto-body panel material is assumed to possess normal anisotropy and to obey Hill's new yield criterion and its associated flow rule. A method of contact treatment is proposed in which the skew boundary condition for arbitarily shaped tools is successively used during iteration. Deformation of each section of trunk-lid panel is simulated and composed to get the three-dimensional shape by using CAD technique. It was shown that the composition of the two-dimensional section analysis gives almost the same results as the full three-dimensional analysis.

  • The inner and outer car panels for bonnet, door, and trunk lid are assembled by hemming rather than welding. To achieve successful fabrication of these panels, the complicated timing chart of hemming units for pre-and main hemming stages should be made to optimal one. In this study, a design system for automatic timing chart generation is developed. Using AutoCAD VBA and EXCEL data chart, hemming die design parameters and guidelines were put into the program to give hemming unit drawings and consequent timing charts. Then the prepared timing charts were checked and modified. The effectiveness of the system is verified by applying it successfully to hemming unit design for bonnet panel joining.

  • Flows are studied to understand the flow structure in the narrow region that any experimental approaches are hard to access, Effects on the vehicle commodities from the flows are anticipated in the point of aerodynamics and aero-acoustics. PowerFLOW, which was well validated commercial software, was used to simulate the flow field in the small region, for example, the inner region of the fender panel, the inner region around the front door and the inner region of the trunk lid. Flows in the narrow region could be origins of door sealing problem and dust piling problem.

  • Hemming is the last farming process in stamping and determines external quality of automotive outer panels. Few numerical approaches using 3-dimensional finite element model have been applied to a hemming process due to small element size which is needed to express the bending behavior of the sheet around small die comer and comparatively big model size of automotive opening parts, such as side door, back door and trunk lid etc In this study, part model assembling method is suggested and applied to the 3-dimensional finite element simulation of flanging and hemming process far an automotive front hood.
