The heat tolerance and the inactivation kinetics of peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in pineapples (Ananas comosus) were studied in the temperature range $45-95^{\circ}C$. The kinetic parameters, such as deactivation rate constant (k), activation energy ($E_a$), and decimal reduction rate (D) of the thermal inactivation process, were determined. POD in pineapples showed biphasic inactivation behavior at temperatures range $45-75^{\circ}C$ but was monophasic at $85-95^{\circ}C$. This indicate that POD has 2 isozymes, namely heat labile and heat resistant, with $E_a$ of 68.79 and 93.23 kJ/mol, respectively. On the other hand, the heat denaturation of pineapple PPO could be described as simple monophasic first-order behavior with $E_a$ of 80.15 kJ/mol. Thus, the results of this study is useful in blanching technology where it shows a shortened time with higher temperature can be applied. The determination of the heat tolerance and inactivation POD and PPO, at different temperature range as done in the present work, was very important to improve the blanching process. This also will help to optimize the pineapple canning process which is one of the most important food industries in many tropical regions.
Pearl millet is a $C_4$ plant and summer crop originated from west Africa, and the sixth most important cereal in the world and the most widely cultivated millet in the semi-arid tropics as a major staple food crop. Its grain of higher quality protein is used to make unleavened bread chapatis and prepared as gruel, dumplings, couscous and beer. It is also used as animal feed and forage in both temperate and tropical regions because it has a capability to grow well not only in the fertile soil, but also in the poor and dry soil. Most of the current breeding procedures used in pearl millet are aimed at maximum exploitation of hybrid vigor for both grain and forage yields in Korea. Pearl millet is ideally suited for exploitation of heterosis using cytoplasmic male sterile lines as seed parent, and fertile inbred lines and open-pollinated cultivars as pollen parent. Pearl millet hybrids developed in Korea produced 3 to 7 tons of grain and 100 to 150 tons of green fodder per hectare.

Molecular markers have increasingly been used in plant genetic analysis, due to their obvious advantages over conventional phenotypic markers, as they are highly polymorphic, more in number, stable across different developmental stages, neutral to selection and least influenced by environmental factors. Among the PCR based marker techniques, ISSR is one of the simplest and widely used techniques, which involves amplification of DNA segment present at an amplifiable distance in between two identical microsatellite repeat regions oriented in opposite direction. Though ISSR markers are dominant like RAPD, they are more stable and reproducible. Because of these properties ISSR markers have recently been found using extensively for finger printing, pohylogenetic analysis, population structure analysis, varietal/line identification, genetic mapping, marker-assisted selection, etc. In mulberry (Morus spp.), ISSR markers were used for analyzing phylogenetic relationship among cultivated varieties, between tropical and temperate mulberry, for solving the vexed problem of identifying taxonomic positions of genotypes, for identifying markers associated with leaf yield attributing characters. As ISSR markers are one of the cheapest and easiest marker systems with high efficiency in generating polymorphism among closely related varieties, they would play a major role in mulberry genome analysis in the future.
The Catba national park (20$\circ$42'-20$\circ$54'N, 106$\circ$54'-107$\circ$09'E), which is a representative protected area in northeast Vietnam, was first investigated in terms of phytosociology of the Zurich-Montpellier School. 15 plant communities were identified from the seven vegetation types: Teetaria-Amoora gigantea community, Blechmum-Pitecellobium ferrugineum community, Impatiens-Dracaena cambodiana community, Rhizophora apiculata community, Avicenia marina community, Panicum repens community, Heterosmilax-Zanthoxylum nitidum community, Stachytarphyta jamaiensis-Bidens bipinnata community, microstegium vagans community, Dicranopteris linearis community, Randina-Sapium sebiferum community, Psidium gujava community, Elephantopus scaber community, and chirita aratformis community. Traditional pasturing and shifting agrie\culture by indigenous people in Catba national park were recognized as main disturbance regies, which have been far above sustainable levels. Ecological strategies for conservation and sustainable use on national park' ecosystem were proposed: (1) development of awareness program on sustainable life style of indigenous people, (2) establishment of multiple use module system of national park, (3) ecosystem monitoring of permanent ecological sites.
In a population-based study with 4 years of follow up, we evaluated the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in cattle on Ulleung Island, Korea. In this study, the rates of C. burnetii infection in cattle on Ulleung Island were determined by PCR and were found to be 0.3-1.0% in the period 2011-2014. All 17 C. burnetii partial 16S rRNA gene sequences from PCR-positive cattle were identical and 2 geographic representatives were included in our analysis. The nucleotide sequences of the 2 samples showed high (98.4-100%) identity with C. burnetii sequences obtained from the GenBank. In this long-term tracking study, the number of cattle positive for C. burnetii on Ulleung Island was low. To prevent the transmission of C. burnetii on Ulleung Island, control strategy should include biosecurity improvement in surveillance, livestock management, administering suitable tests before purchasing animals to detect C. burnetii shedders, and restricting movements between herds.
Bioprospecting has been widely used to assess the economic potential of different plant species and their value-addition. Prospecting for biological material like plants with medicinal or other economically valuable properties like fibre or oil is becoming a dynamic activity. Our folklore with embedded cultural heritage has tremendous possibilities and potential for bioprospecting. This forest region of Western Rajasthan is enriched with diverse vegetational wealth, if subjected to bioprospecting may prove to be a boon for the society.
Heat stress is a major challenge to animal production in tropical and subtropical climates. Rabbits suffer from heat stress more than farm animals because they have few sweat glands, and their bodies are covered with thick fur. Intensive farming relies on antibiotics as antimicrobials or growth promoters to increase animals' productivity and health. However, the European Union and many countries have banned or restricted the use of antibiotics in animal feed for human health concerns. Several studies have found that replacing antibiotics in rabbit feed with natural plants or feed additives increases productivity and improves immune capacity, especially under heat stress conditions. Growth performance, immune response, gut microflora, and carcass yield may be increased in rabbits fed a diet supplemented with some natural plants and/or propolis. In this review article, we discuss and summarize the effects of some herbs and plant extracts as alternative feed additives on rabbit productivity, especially for those raised under hot ambient temperatures.
The family Curtonotidae, known as the Hunchbacked or Quasimodo fly, is a small group of acalyptrate flies belonging to the superfamily Ephydroidea. Until now, a total of 103 species under four genera have been recorded worldwide, mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Among them, only five species of the genus Curtonotum Macquart, 1843 have been recorded in the Palaearctic region, mainly in the Russian Far East, but there are still no previous reports in the Korean fanua. In this study, we firstly report the family Curtonotidae Duda, 1934 from Korea with Curtonotum maritimum Ozerov, 2007. Additionally, we provide taxonomic information and a key for the Palaearctic Curtonotum species.
Objective: The experiment was conducted to study the effect of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) fruit peel powder (RP) on feed consumption, digestibility of nutrients, ruminal fermentation dynamics and microbial population in Thai breed cattle. Methods: Four, 2-year old (250±15 kg) beef bull crossbreds (75% Brahman×25% local breed) were allotted to experimental treatments using a 4×4 Latin square design. Four dietary supplementation treatments were imposed; non-supplementation (control, T1); supplementation of RP fed at 2% of dry matter intake (DMI) (low, T2); supplementation of RP fed at 4% of DMI (medium, T3) and supplementation of RP fed at 6% of DMI (high, T4). All cattle were given a concentrate supplement at 1% of body weight while Napier grass was provided as a free choice. Results: The findings revealed that RP supplementation did not negatively affect (p>0.05) DMI of Napier grass, while RP intake and total DMI were the greatest in the RP supplementation at 4% and 6% DMI. Nevertheless, the nutrients (dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber) digestibilities were not changed in the RP supplementation groups. Rumen fermentation parameters especially those of total volatile fatty acids, acetate and butyrate were not significantly changed. However, the propionate concentration was remarkably increased (p<0.05) in the RP supplementation. Notably, the ratio of acetate to propionate, the number of protozoa, as well as the methane estimation were significantly reduced in the RP supplemented groups (4% and 6% of DMI), while the counts of bacteria was not altered. Conclusion: Supplementation of RP (4% of DMI) improved rumen propionate production, reduced protozoal population and methane estimation (p<0.05) without a negative effect on feed consumption and nutrients total tract digestibilities in beef cattle. Using dietary rambutan fruit peel powder has potential promise as a rumen regulator.
In most African urban areas, Particulate Matters (PM) concentration exceeds by far the WHO limits. In these areas, plants can play a key role in removing particles. In this study, we evaluated three ornamental species (Jatropha interrigima, Ficus benjamina, Barleria prionitis) used in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Leaf-encapsulated saturation isothermal remnant magnetisation (SIRM) were measured and the relationship between PM captured and leaf wettability were done. The sampling were performed at roadsides and Parks. Firstly, Leaf-encapsulated and total leaf SIRM were quantified and the wettability was determined by drop contact angles (DCA). Secondly, the relationship between leaf SIRM and wettability was found. Results showed that leaf SIRM was two to ten times higher at roadsides than in Parks. Total leaf SIRM was also higher on mature leaves in Main roads suggesting a particle accumulation in leaves over time especially in waxy species (Ficus benjamina). This species encapsulated other than 20% of total leaf SIRM. All tested species were highly-wettable ($40^{\circ}$ < DCA < $90^{\circ}$). Thus, Jatropha interrigima with its leaf trichomes and F. benjamina with its leaf waxes were more wettable. A significantly positive correlation was found between wettability intensity and leaf SIRM.
