Preparation of Hard Coating Solutions by Sol-Gel Reaction of Glycidoxypropyl Trimethoxysilane and Methacryloxypropyl Trimethoxysilane (Glycidoxypropyl Trimethoxysilane과 Methacryloxypropyl Trimethoxysilane의 Sol-Gel 반응을 이용한 하드코팅 용액의 제조)

  • Hard coating solutions were prepared from glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) precursors with different molar ratios of 10:0, 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, and 0:10, respectively, by the sol-gel method. The polycarbonate (PC) sheets were spin-coated, and cured at $130^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. The effect of the GPTMS:MPTMS molar ratios of the mixture was investigated on the properties of coating films. The highest pencil hardness and adhesion to PC sheets of coating films were found for solution with GPTMS:MPTMS molar ratio of 5:5. Also, the pencil hardness of coating films was increased with increasing the $H_2O$ content in the coating solutions.

  • The self assembled silver process and silver coating process after surface reforming for silica particle, were investigated to coat the silver to colloidal silica. The effects of silver amounts and reductant amounts on silver coating efficiencies were investigated. The silver coating process after surface reforming for silica particle using MPTS (3-Mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane) and APTS (3-Aminopropyl trimethoxysilane), showed the higher coating efficiency and better antibacterial effect than the self assembled silver process.

  • NCO terminated polyurethane prepolymers were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), poly (tetramethylene glycol)(PTMG) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA). Subsequently, waterborne polyurethanes were prepared by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymers with different types of silane coupling agents, such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMS), glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane(GPTMS), methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and aminopropyl triethoxysilane(APS). The average particle size of the waterborne polyurethane solutions was increased by adding silane coupling agents. Also, the coating films prepared from GPTMS, MPTMS and APS, exhibited better pencil hardness than those from pure waterborne polyurethane. On the other hand, the coating films from MTMS did not show an improved pencil hardness than those from pure waterborne polyurethane.

  • In order to improve the surface hardness of transparent plastic films, organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding GPTMS (glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane) to a colloidal silica (12 nm) suspension. PC(polycarbonate) substrates were dipped into the coating solutions and dried at room temperature for 10 min before being cured at $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The effect of the solution pH and GPTMS content was investigated on the properties of coating films. The pencil hardness and adhesion to substrates of the coating films, prepared at acidic condition (pH 4), showed better properties than those at neutral or basic conditions. Also, the pencil hardness and adhesion to substrates of the coating films increased with increasing GPTMS content.

  • Slurry phase reaction of elemental silicon with methanol has been studied in the presence of copper using a small amount of cuprous chloride as an activator in DBT (dibenzyltoluene) at various temperatures from 200 ${^{\circ}C}$ to 320 ${^{\circ}C}$. Trimethoxysilane (1a) with a Si-H unit was obtained as the major product and tetramethoxysilane (1b) as the minor product. The reaction worked well using a 0.5 wt % CuCl as an activator. The optimum temperature for this direct synthesis of 1a was 240 ${^{\circ}C}$. Methoxysilanes were obtained in 95% yield with 81% selectivity to 1a from 85% conversion of elemental silicon.

  • The hard coatings on the polycarbonate plate were performed with the object of substitution the glass in the car to the polycarbonate plate. In this research, (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS), and diethylenetriamine (DETA) were used to prepare the coatings by a sol-gel process. The optimum conditions and formulation to achiere the excellent physical properties of the coating were determined. In the case of using GPTMS and DETA, the smooth coating which had the 2 H class in pencil hardness was formed. In the case of using GPTMS and APS, the coating which had the 2 H class in pencil hardness was also formed. And the coatings with GPTMS and DETA showed an excellent abrasion resistant.

  • The hard coatings on the polycarbonate plate were performed with the object of substitution the glass in the car to the polycarbonate plate. In this research, [3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane were used to prepare the coatings by sol-gel process. Butanol was used as a solvent, HCl was used as a catalyst, and AIBN was used as an initiator. Polycarbonate plate was pretreated with PMMA, and final heating of the coating was done at $130^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. Pencil hardness of the coating was 2 H, abrasion resistance and adhesion of the coating were excellent.

Preparation of Hard Coating Films with High Refractive Index using Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coating Solutions (유-무기 하이브리드 코팅 용액을 이용한 고굴절 하드코팅 막의 제조)

  • Inorganic-organic hybrid coating solutions were synthesized using titania sol from titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) as an inorganic component and mixture of two or three types of silane coupling agents, such as methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS), glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) as an organic component. The hard coating films were obtained by spin-coating on the polycarbonate sheets and curing the inorganic-organic hybrid coating solutions. The coating films made from the mixture of two types of silane coupling agents showed poor pencil hardness and adhesion, while those from the mixture of three types of silane coupling agents exhibited an improved pencil hardness of 2H~4H and adhesion of 5B. The refractive indexes of coating films were increased from 1.56 to 1.63 at 550 nm by increasing the content of titania sols from 20 to 30 g.

  • In order to improve the anti-fogging property of polymer films, organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions which have good hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane(GPS) to a colloidal silica(15 nm) suspension(Ludox). GPS as silane coupling agent forms strong bonds to the colloidal silica and surrounding polymer matrix and links two different materials together. Solutions prepared by addition of GPS at the acidic condition resulted in coatings that were less prone to cracking, while those at the basic condition caused coatings with more cracking. These resulted in better hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light for the solution prepared at the acidic condition(pH 2). Compared with coatings under acidic conditions, coatings prepared at basic conditions showed worse hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light.

In this research, (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), colloidal silica (CS), and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APS) were used to prepare the coatings by sol-gel process. The optimum conditions and formulation to get the excellent physical properties of the coating were determined. GPTMS and CS were hydrolyzed in ethanol, and then APS was added in this solution. Using these solution the hard coating were applied to the polycarbonate plate. The smooth coating which got the 2 H class in pencil hardness was formed. And this coating showed excellent abrasion resistant and adhesion property.
